I want to get a manticore for my fantasy campaign (can't have too many monsters). Searching the net all the figures I've found seem to be inspired by D&D's notion of what a manticore is, whereas I'd really rather something that looks like the ones in medieval art. Was just wondering if anybody is aware of anything like that for sale out there?
So I'd like it to be less like this...

And more like this...

The D&D type is cool-looking and all, but the older depiction has a kind of goofyness that I find appealing. Ta. :)

Maybe the Mirliton one, if you hacked off its wings.

The two Alternative Armies ones (old TTG miniatures, rereleased) have wings but the wings come separately, so you could easily leave them off and fill the gaps with green stuff or whatever. They both have a slightly stylised, heraldic look. For some reason, the bigger one is more than twice the price of the smaller (£15 vs £6), although it's not hugely bigger:

Oh, and Alternative Armies also does the old Nick Bibby one from Asgard. Again, the wings are separate, and it's got a nicely stylised look to it. It sits between the other two in price at £10:

Thanks, fellas.
That Mirliton one is looking like the best candidate I've seen so far, once those wings are removed. I like that the face looks a bit more human rather than leonine or monstrous in some other way, which is preferable to me.

Have you see Andrew May's collection of Medieval Marginala miniatures?

The Mirliton one's fantastic, certainly, and definitely the best fit bar wings. But given the cost of postage from Italy, I'd be tempted to do a kitbash using these guys and perhaps a Victrix viking head. They're £19 for 6 on the GW site, but you can get them cheaper on eBay (and individual ones too).

Oh boy, can't wait to see what you come up with, make sure you let us see the finished article! Please!

Kitbashing with a Gryphhound is what I did, took less than an hour.
Removed head and tail, added a demon head and wire/glass beads for tail, bit of greenstuff for the mane.
Tried to paint it oldschool too.

Wow! Great work!
The beads for the tail is a brilliant idea - and he looks splendid!
-
Great ideas, there. Those have made me remember that I have a Foundry Darkest Africa lion somewhere, if I can just find a big enough human face to slap on the front we might be in business.
Was hoping to find something off the peg, but If I'm going to have to muck around with surgery anyway I may as well do a slightly bigger conversion job.

You could use an ogre face, I suppose (a spare head from the Wargames Atlantic ogre sprue - especially the one with the luxuriant beard? Think I've got a spare if you want it). But if you wanted a more human head, you might find a suitable 1/32 or 1/35 head that would work (various companies seem to sell those without bodies).
-
I have a few different GW ogre faces that might work.
PM me if you want me to send you a couple.

Thanks for the offers of bits, I really appreciate it. Thankfully though I remembered I have a bendy plastic ogre that came from a tub of figures I was given as a Christmas present. There were two in the tub and I don't need two. I'm scheduling him for a beheading as he looks about the right size to go on the front of my lion. So if all goes well I won't need to take anybody up on their offers.
I might give the headless torso some kind of bucket helmet or pumpkin head or something. Waste not, want not.
:)

Please post some pictures when it's done.

Ral Partha Europe sell a wingless manticore in their "Das Schwartze Auge" range. It's a jolly nice one.
-
This isn't quite what I had in mind when I started this thread (I wanted a human head rising more or less vertically from the body, not a face sticking out of the front), but considering it's the result of working with stuff I already had in the bits box and didn't have to spend any money I'm mostly pleased with it:

I might leave the tail as it is or give him some sort of stinger, haven't decided yet. Also I'm undecided as to whether or not to remove his fangs. I'll think on that.
-
That's pretty awesome to be honest, not totally like the pictures you posted but very much akin to other medieval pictures I've seen.
I would change the tail as it will allow a colour change from the main body; I quite like the fangs though.
-
That's rather nice and works quite well. IMHO, It does look a bit front-heavy now, though, so I would second the scorpion tail option to visually balance out the figure and maybe continue the overall curve of the spine.
-
That's a great conversion! The pose is a little more like this fellow:

Rapier miniatures make this manticore: https://rapierminiatures.com/product/manticore/
I bought it for much the same reason as you, i.e. it's closer to a goofy medieval manticore.
The casting wasn't brilliant if I'm honest.. but easier than attempting to sculpt one lol
-
I agree it needs a more impressive tail to balance it out, and have started work on a scorpion-style one. Only problem is that I'm awful at sculpting. :)
Though looking at that pic Hobgoblin posted I think I like that spiky tail better, I might go with something a bit more like that.
-
Probably a bit late to the game, but I think the new Serpopard miniature from North Star has something of the right look.
Might still need a new face and tail, but it has that long neck from the illustrations.
-
Yeah, that one is pretty nice, and certainly has potential.
Maybe an entire brood (pride?) is called for?
-
Well I've finished him...

(Oh dear, the face came out a bit blurry on that one, sorry about that, I've put everything away now so it will just have to do.)
Halfway through doing this fellow, I remembered I had some other African animals I could mutilate, and decided to have another go. I think this was originally a cheetah, and I really felt he needed a Frostgrave barbarian head grafting on to him:

He looks decidedly less ferocious than the first one, but he is much nearer to what I had in mind when I started this whole business. If we ever need one for our game I'm not sure which I will use. Kinda like them both in different ways.
-
They are both awesome.
I'd be tempted to make the cheetah based one a party member, a wise old mythical creature providing aid and guidance.
Hope you kitbash further stuff as I love seeing things like this in a world of 3D printing.
-
They turned out really well - great work!

This right here. You've really knocked it out of the park with this one. It's perfect.

Very nice work!

Now that's a cracking manticore there, appropriately unsettling 😂
