Title: Battletech: Black Sheep dropship inbound
Post by: Maniac on 05 June 2024, 02:47:27 AM
I've been collecting and painting Battletech for close on to 26 years now, but haven't played since college.  That is until I recently came upon Alpha Strike about a year and a half back.

What was originally just the Black Sheep Mercenary Company has since expanded to all 5 houses, multiple merc companies, and a clan.  With the release of Alpha Strike, I've even got my son playing and doing at least preliminary painting of his own minis.  Recently he and I ran a game for my gaming group that consisted of company with support on company with support, something I'd have never done in CBT.

We ran a game with a reinforced Marik company of Silver Eagles, supported by a mech and mixed vehicle with infantry support lance of 21st Centauri Lancers dropping on a House Steiner world.  Steiner was backed up by a lance of Black Sheep Mercenaries with a lance of vehicles, battle armor, and vtol support.  The Marik/21st had two aerospace assets and one offboard artillery, while Steiner/Black Sheep had 1 aerospace and two offboard artillery.

Objectives were a fuel/supply depot, bridge, and the city gate.  No artillery could be dropped withing 2 inches of an objective (it could scatter onto it, but not directed at it).  The opening aerospace moves were BRUTAL, very deadly but very fragile assets.  As the first game with them, it was definitely a learning curve.  Do not keep units in a line or you will be lit up instantly, and aerospace die hard to mass fire.  That, coupled with the shear volume of onboard units made for a great, if frentic, game.

Additionally we used the fan rules of rolling a D12 for every damage point you would do (so 3 at medium would mean rolling 3D12, while 5 at short would mean 5D12 at short).  I've found this means you are doing damage more often, but less damage per hit (i.e. under normal Alpha Strike it is all or nothing, where this method tends to mean you are at least constantly chipping away at stuff).

The other modification was activating a lance at a time, which works way better than individual models at this scale (and particularly given a 6 player match).

Mid to late game you can get a sense of the volume of stuff you can plunk down with Alpha Strike.

Marik/21st start the main push for the bridge:

Close, but cannot get there.  In site of the 2nd objective, Marik/21st Centauri just couldn't get there before we called it.

Well, I was one of those who backed the massively successful Kickstarter for BattleTech Mercenaries.  Today I just got the email saying a shipment is inbound, which is incredible.  Overall a well run Kickstarter that is shipping roughly on time, amazing.

I'll post pics when the dropship arrives, and then have a massive haul to work through.  Salvage is a good thing!

Well, I have my work cut out for me.  Multiple lances, both mech and vehicle, to fill in.

Is this from the new kickstarter? If so I'm jealously awaiting mine. Good luck painting them :)

It is indeed.  Woof, that's a lot of mechs to work through.

And the painting begins with the John Reid (Lone Ranger's alter ego) dropship, a lance of vehicles for Kurita, a Firefly for Comstar, and two lances of vehicles for Davion (while not on Camospecs, I found inspiration on unit color compendium for the 8th Deneb).

Awesome stuff, did you get any mix-ups with the salvage boxes? Heard there's some tanks in the mech boxes by accident.

I did have one mech salvage box which contained a galleon light tank instead of a mech.  Everything else was fine

Some Kurita, Davion, and Comstar reinforcements:

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2024/7/17/1195111_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1195111-.html)

Kurita includes Duke Hasid Ricol's Marauder, and then rounds his lance out with a Quickdraw, Starslayer, and Chamelon (all 4 from the new Mercenaries set).  They look the part for Kell Hounds, but that is the color scheme the art work uses for Ricol.

Then the 8th Deneb include a Ceasar, Ostsol, Goshawk, and an Enforcer (the Enforcer and Goshawk are singles I had previously purchased, but helped level out the weight class vs the Kurita lance).

Bothe lances are still waiting for their decals to come from Fighting Piranha, but otherwise done.

Lastly are a Galleon and a scout vehicle, both from the Mercenaries set.  They round out a 6 vehicle group for Comstar, and with the 6 Comstar mechs all I will paint for Comstar (I'll used them as post IL-Clan survivors)

They put an extra salvage box in for everyone so I guess not too much of a problem. I can't even remember what I pledged for, I may have grabbed some vehicles, don't really know. We'll see when it arrives.
Those ones look cool. I love the colour scheme of the ones on the right.

I'm guessing you're probably American then?
Outside of the USA most of us backers are less enthralled - we were promised domestic shipping rates, now have to pay international shipping rates and still no products in sight. I'm now hoping that my stuff arrives before my birthday in October but honestly, Christmas or next year seems more likely. It all seemed like a very well run kickstarter, CGL building on their past successes, then they changed shipping companies and it all fell apart at that point.
It does seem like the only customers CGL are concerned about are the American ones - the rest of the world appears to be a bit of an embarrassment to them at the moment but we'll see what happens when (or if) I get a complete delivery.
Aside from that, the Mercenaries set does look good, can't wait to get mine and the extras, then there's the AS Aces set to look forward to. Interesting times and I've enjoyed playing a form of AS since the '90's (but that's another story!)

I am an American, yes.  Sorry to hear it is not going well across the pond.  It is a shame as it is nice stuff.

Currently I'm working on a recon lance for the 21st Centauri, a lance for my Black Sheep, and some elementals for Clan Sea Fox.  My son asked about a star for another clan, so I painted up a Crossbow and the Blood Asp from the set in Spina colors.  I'll see if I can get some photos once the elementals are done.

First of a Clan Star (I will print the rest once I get my printer fixed).  Blood Asp is from the kickstarter, I had the Crossbow and then added the elementals.

I've based most of my battle armor 2 to a base, and this just makes the elementals match the rest of the bases (for the most part infantry 4 to a base or 3 for a command stand, PA at 2 to a base).  The Catalyst Elementals are nice and in scale, which is a frustration as the IWM stuff is all too big.

Looks greats. Like you I had a very long break from BT but it is still a fantastic universe. And actually in our club its popularity grows.

As for the KS, like Rick I'm still waiting on mine, same story really. Can't say i'm overly enthusiastic about supporting another KS, if there is one. Not because of the delays - those are to be expected in some ways - but because of CGLs communiction policy especially in regards of the rest of the world.

Nearing the end of the new pieces, two lances, a couple spares, and a visagoth to go.

4th Tau Ceti and Black Sheep lances geared up to slug it out.  The Tau Ceti were a fun departure, being all metallic.  They consist of a Charger, Scorpion, Vulcan, and a Whitworth.  The Black Sheep in their uniform grey/black are a Mauler, a Devestator, a Caesar, and a Marauder. I haven't yet thought up the nose art I want for each, so they are done for now.

To round things out I'll have a heavy recon lance for the Rough Riders, and probably another 8th Deneb lances (using the remaining cartoon pieces of a Wolfhound, Bushwhacker, Hatamoto-chi, and Axeman).  The Flea will probably be a spare Marik unit, and I haven't decided on the spare Devestator yet
