About 40 years ago, I can remember being down my local wargaming club as a young lad, and seeing the older lads of the club, flying Wessex helicopters into clearings in a German wood, dropping off troops and land rovers to fight off the Soviet masses….all in 6mm (1/300).
Now I went home and thought, “that’s doable” on my pocket money.
I sent off the skytrex and H&R, and amassed a US force of M60 MBT’s, but before I could paint them ,they launched the M1 Abraham tank and I was already out date !
I even bought the new Soviet T80 tank (that no one had seen, so was the designers best guess (they thought it would be very box shaped).
Anyway, as kids we got a few games in, then the popularity died off, and my 6mm modern kit disappeared to the back of the cupboards.
Just a couple of weeks ago, a mate mentioned he might explore the Cold War commander rules using 6mm European kit, as he had been using the rules successfully for 10mm Iran/Iraq wars.
Wow I thought, I’ve got some…..somewhere.
Well last weekend I found them, yes at the back of the cupboard.
I started “tarting them up” as I’ve learnt a little more about painting and basing in the last 40 years.
I now present, my tarting up process…
First off, find your tanks.
Boxes of them.

Remove them from their cardboard bases.

Order some new bases, with some repaints and away you go.

Same with the old buildings.
Dig them out then tart them up.
Old box of buildings, half painted.

A bit of a repaint later.

Found some damaged buildings that I based up.
Halfway there.

Finished ruins.

So I’m getting there.
It’s nice to dig out an old project, then to get it back on the rails again.
Just a few more vehicles to base now….

Nice bit of nostalgia. I too had scads of micro armour back when it was all contemporary. Offloaded mine years ago. Wish I hadn't now. :'(

That’s the thing.
Off loading projects.
They are like boomerangs…..they keep coming back.
I have a mate that moved out of his flat and wanted the chuck all his toy soldiers in the skip.
I said no and that I would look after them.
I stored his boxes away, and over the years, we have dived back into the boxes, as projects come up and we shout “we’ve got some of those….somewhere”.
Our other mates took a different route with his sci-fi figures, and kindly sold them off for him on eBay.
Don’t know what we will do if we need sci-fi figures ?
Probably buy his old ones back off eBay I guess lol

I'm slowly poking away at a 6mm Team Yankee project. The tanks are all new (*), but I have a load of old buildings that I'll be able to use. I dug them out yesterday and took some pictures, just to avoid buying too many duplicates when I add some. There was quite a bit of spelunking to find them, even though they were where I thought they were
Throwing stuff out - words that should never appear in a hobby sentence, and certainly not in that order, unless prefixed with "I am never" ;D
(*) new to me, but, looking at some of the casts, I think H&R may still be using 40 year old moulds :(

Good job there Bob.

I too have got back into what used to be called "ultra modern" after 30+ years, but am now using PSC's Battlegroup NORTHAG rather than Challenger rules.
As regards H&R some of their models are quite dated but they do have many new models. You can tell which are which by the pricing.
