I’ve just bought a copy of “Fire in the sky” rules.
I’ve seen a few play thro videos, and have always been interested in late war bombing runs, and how to game them.
At first, I thought “no the rules aren’t for me”, but then thinking on, I concluded that I already had the 1/600 aircraft already painted, and I read a few articles that said the rules were “fun”, so I thought I’d give them a go.
The system works on a grid.
6inch by 6inch boxes, that the fighter aircraft move thro, whilst the bombers sit there.
I wondered how to represent a box grid on a gaming mat ?
I didn’t want to permanently draw lines all over a gaming mat, just in case I didn’t like the rules, and I’d ruined a mat in the process. :o
I saw that someone had added white sticky dots to a mat, to represent the squares. I liked that idea.
So last weekend, my buddy Has.been found a wings of glory mat going cheap for £10.
It was bought and yesterday I experimented on it.
I thought the 6 inch by 6 inch squares were a little too big, so went down to 5 inch by 5 inch, which allowed me to get a few more squares on the mat.

Going from 6 x 6, down to 5 x5.
I then applied white sticky backed spots (bought from hoddycraft, postal section), at 5inch x 5 inch intervals.

I’ve then added my 1/600 aircraft from Tumbling dice onto the squares to see how they look.

Now it might look ok, but I wonder if it’s going to be too confusing ?
There seems to be a lot of detail ?
I’m starting to wonder if a plain blue cloth might work better ?

Seems to me you’ve got a good looking table, nice aircraft, and have got the rules, so why not just suck it and see before changing anything else?

I agree with @2010sunburst on the mat and aircraft. I'd never seen that mat before, and it looks very well done.
I'm not sure the white dots work, as they do get lost a bit. I did wonder about a grid of thread, but securing that would be a pain. Maybe tile connectors (not sure that's the correct term, but something with a + shape), which could define the grid better?
It would be a shame to have that mat and not use it :(
-
Yes, I must admit, I thought of the tile dividers too. By this I mean the white plastic + things.
I’d seen the white dots on someone else’s mat, that why I went with it.
My mates are saying the same as you guys. You’ve done it, now give it a go.

I like the idea, the dots aren't too obtrusive and I really like that matt.
Give it a go, whats the worst that can happen?!!
Well I suppose all your bombers could get shot down, that would be bad

Don’t think having the mat on a spotted table protector is helping your cause though…. ;)

I say, 'Give it a go' and not just to get some bacon Butties. ;)
