Looking for some skirmish games that have sides of only 10-15 models. I think Baron’s War and the new Ruckus game are in this range, correct?
Edit: I was reminded of Outremer as well.
Can anyone compare the these?
Any other recommendations? Anything close to a medieval version of Ronin?
-
Can't compare but I think I am working towards a medieval skirmish capable collection of figures. Most likely I will be using Fistful of Lead rules, though, perhaps Bigger Battles variant.
-
FFOL fer sure. Thud and Blunder, Blood Eagle, Ravenfeast would all work.Song of Blades and Heroes.
-
En Garde might work for you if you're looking for a ronin medieval version. Or the Rules "Force of Virtue" if you're looking for some late medieval and renaissance action in Italy.
-
Historian in Harness is working on a new set of Medieval skirmish rules.

Barons War is about twice that but, to get the most out of it, you probably want a few more - I'd say 30 - 40. If you are prepared to go up to about 30 figs per side then you'll get a good game out of it.
Outremer (the Osprey one) is actually a good little game. Although set up to be a crusades game you can still use it as a generic medieval game (I do). Needs a few tweaks here and there, but nothing you can't easily do for yourself.
Ravenfeast, as the name suggests, is Viking-era, but could easily be modified to any sword and shield period. And it's free.
Never played FFOL or Billhooks/Ruckus, so can't comment. There's something about both of them that's never inspired me to give them a go. Don't know what it is. Mind you, if someone in the club offered to run a game I'd be more than willing to give it a go, but something just prevents me from buying into either, personally.
A/SoBH is a capable system. Sometimes a bit too bland and vanilla without hurling lots of special rules at each character, and then you have the nightmare of the special rule list. But works well enough.
For my money, when I want a game at the scale you propose (about dozen figures per side) I use Outremer.

On a similar thread I am also aiming to get into the Medieval side of things and most likely using the Barons war rules and was wondering about basing. Barons war rules advises round bases but I just wanted to check before I commit to round that its fine with other sets of rules ? Dont want to find I need square to play something else ?
-
Barons' War uses individually based miniatures.
The rules say, and depict, round, but it would make no difference whatsoever.
So do what you prefer.
I have all my individually based miniatures on rounds. I use them with a variety of rules (Barons War, Saga, Lion Rampant, Ravenfeast, plus others) and they all work fine. Mind you, they'd work fine with square bases as well, or even a mixture of the two.

Thankyou ;)

Argad allows very fast moves on large tables - if all players accept the unusual simultaneous system - and RPG-minded adventures.
-
I'll second Force of Virtue! It is specifically meant to be a late medieval game though, so if you're looking for an earlier period I don't know how useful it'll be.
-
If you want to customise every minis stats individually you could go with Open Combat by second thunder.

I just got an email from "Grey For Now Games" announcing a Facebook group for "Guards of Traitor’s Toll," a skirmish game similar to their "Test of Honour" and "0200 Hours." I'm hoping for something Mordheim-like.

Nordic Weasel (Ivan Sorenson) has a few, Chevauchee is the medieval version of his 5 Leagues system, more like the original 5L system than the upgraded Modiphius version. It's a solo/campaign game, though it's flexible for other styles too.
He also has a set of rules for medieval skirmishes, "Knyghte Pyke and Sworde" that are for a range of battle sizes.
There's also Sword Weirdos, which at its big end is the smaller end of your preferred battle size. It's be Garske Games, a sequel to their popular Space Weirdos rules.
All are available from Wargame Vault.

Certainly will be interesting to see what Grey For Now has come up with:

Lords and Servants, by Dadi & Piombi (Impetus), might fit the bill. I bought the rules a while back but have yet to play. They look very interesting, though. Here's a positive review by Delta Vector (http://deltavector.blogspot.com/2014/12/lords-servants-medieval-skirmish-rules.html). You can get the print rules on Amazon or the PDF from Wargames Vault.
The game can be played in small, medium and large formats; small would fit the bill for your chosen number of figures (although you would have more if you went all in on lightly armed militia or something).

I have played many skirmish wargames rules over the years and my absolute favourite is John Lambshead´s "One Hour Skirmish Wargames". While this set came a few years ago and is focused on games involving firearms, he just released a medieval version. The game system only uses ordinary playing cards instead of dice in a very clever way that gives a lot of depth and a game that flows quickly without having to consult a lot of tables. The typical number of figures per side is 5-15. There is also a busy facebook group which gives great support on questions. Highly recommended!

You are quite correct concerning Ruckus which requires 12 figures to form a Retinue. It is written for small scale skirmishing on a table 3x3 or 4x4. It is a narrative based scenario driven game with Character development through a simple Campaign game system. https://wilgut.blogspot.com/2024/04/heres-ruckus.html

Melee, the combat component of The Fantasy Trip RPG, would work quite well for 10–15 figures a side skirmish.

If you like GWs Lord of the Rings skermish system, then this is also a option.
Age of Trebuchet. A fan mod, that I think works well. https://www.scribd.com/document/202389691/Age-of-Trebuchet

I played that one to death as a kid. archers shielded behind a few tanks were nigh unstoppable. had i had miniatures back then, i would probably still use it, the rules were pretty good…far better than D&D rules at the time.

En Garde! is meant for Renaissance through say early 1700s, primarily designed for the Musketeers/Man in the Iron Mask/etc.
However, it will work with some small tweaks for Dark Age through late Medieval (namely reworking shield rules a little for earlier periods). It is overall a good, small scale, system with plenty of character.
FFoL, and particular the Might and Melee book have largely replaced it for me. I prefer the card activation system and less messing with the plus/minus of the various stats. That said, if you've played Ronin it is a perfectly adequate system, cheap, and easy to dream up a force from nothing.
It does have an appendix with some fantasy elements as well if you want to include something a bit more Solomon Kane to your games.
