Title: My modest Mahdist War project
Post by: misterdirector1 on 23 August 2024, 09:11:48 PM
Aiming to build up enough figures to play 24 pt games of MWWBK. Have figures on the way to build out forces for Suakin and Nile expeditions of 1884, having a ton of fun painting these up!

Absolutely love these Perry Camel Corps. Great variety of poses if you mix the sets. Goggles, bandoliers, a nice color scheme, these guys got it all. Just wish the rifles sculpts were a bit sharper. These are maybe some of the best paint jobs I've done.

Here's something you don't see in wargaming everyday: Perry's captured Egyptian Krupp 6 pdr. When the Bija tribe joined the Mahdi's rebellion in Sudan, they captured enormous amounts of rifles, cannons, and even machine guns from the defeated Egyptian army. Egyptian soldiers who surrendered were pressed into service.

At the second battle of El Teb, Egyptian crews were chained to their cannons by the Bija and forced to fire on the advancing British. They fired canister shells, which were ineffective at that range, suggesting the crews may have intentionally sabotaged their own fire. Regardless, these crewmen were among the first casualties as the British brought their own artillery into range.

Command stand for the Mahdist war. I'll be using him as General Graham initially, but he could pull double duty as Stewart or other generals. He's joined by attendant and horse, a member of his staff, war correspondent Milton Prior, and his faithful pup!

Ran a game at Milleniumcon, Temple TX on Saturday! Right at about 200 figures, using the Men Who Would Be Kings rules. The Mahdists used the terrain and their ambush ability to great effect. They swept around from behind while charging from the cover of a dried riverbed and overran the British invaders. Beresford and the naval contingent were wiped out while the camel corps ran out of steam on the other side of the board.

I've uploaded the scenario and my house rules here if you want to take a look https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oqGmKDgRw-cHGIPnvsMPIn6WW1BD7C_d/view?usp=drive_link

Picked up Blood & Steel at the con and am wanting to try Sudan out with those rules next.

Great looking game.

Good that the rules let the Mahdists get in close - its been an age since we’ve played TMWWMKs

Great work, I never understood the use of light blue uniforms in the desert though.

This was the very start of the era of camouflage/ natural coloured uniforms. There were British forces still in Red Coats at this time. I think the blue/grey was a British fatigue uniform so may have been used in the desert as a lightweight alternative, rather than to be less visible. Though it probably is less visible than red!

Interesting house rules, where are the Camel Corps camels 😳?

The grey uniforms were Wolseley's idea. He was big on more practical uniforms for the tropics and his troops in the Ashanti war had worn an experimental grey uniform, designed to be less visible and more comfortable, and it had been considered a success.

Consequently he had ordered grey uniforms for the Egypt expedition of 1882, but they failed to arrive in time and so were in storage in Egypt when the Sudan crisis erupted. They were issued to the troops sent there from the UK, as unlike the troops from India, they had no khaki uniforms.

Very interesting certainly less noticeable than red uniforms though I would imagine they were still uncomfortably hot

Indeed. Seems they were made from the same serge material as the scarlet uniforms, so I find it rather unlikely they'd actually be any more comfortable in the heat of the tropics.

How did using the Men Who Would Be Kings rules go? I've never seen a game played with it.

There's things I like about it, especially the different unit types and how they interact. There are some missing pieces that require house rules. Also I'm not a fan of rolling dice to see if your guys even do anything. I'm fiddling with a colonial ruleset of my own that incorporates the elements I like with some more Lardy style dynamism

I don’t know if I’ve seen those Sikh miniatures before, or maybe it’s just the NCO with the rifle that is pointing. Which manufacturer made the Sikhs?

Great stuff, great painting, wonderful terrain.

Ran a game at Twisted Lords Con in OKC OK on Saturday

(https://preview.redd.it/i-ran-my-wip-colonial-rules-beyond-all-orders-at-twisted-v0-aycqzczt42df1.jpg?width=1080&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=a8b9ce0dac1537151856aa01fab3c881bc7ccdec)

Scenario based on the battle of Tofrek (Sudan 1885). The Mahdists charged out of thick scrub towards an unfinished zeriba (thornbush fort). The British had to deal with a Gatling that wasn't set up yet and some regulars who were caught gathering branches outside the fort.

(https://preview.redd.it/i-ran-my-wip-colonial-rules-beyond-all-orders-at-twisted-v0-0fr7ihzt42df1.jpg?width=1080&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=d125a738bb5d0b5b29a59a92506cc67596857885)

Lucky insurgent sniper fire sent the Sikhs packing and Bija tribesmen were able to contact the weakest point of the zeriba. A bloody game and victory for the Mahdists!

The rules are definitely an "alpha" right now, still making some major changes to core mechanics! Once I am really happy with those core rules I do plan to open the beta to folks for feedback. I'll be posting here once that happens!

On MWWBK, the rules read with lots of interesting ideas.  Afraid they play like Swiss cheese with all the holes in them, nobody plays them straight that I've ever heard of, even from first tries.

And the one rule that truly ruins the rules for me is that accursed die roll to move - can ruin the game experience for a player who gets hit with it too many times in a multi-player game.  We play to be actively involved in a game, not to sit back and watch others have a good time.  Well, normally.

Nice collection you've built.  Have you ever tried Fistful of Lead: Bigger Battles as an option?

Totally agree on the activation roll. I do have a "training test" in my rules for carrying out complex orders like volley fire. If you fail your unit can still do other things though (well unless they're "unmotivated" then they really do just have to sit there or fall back!). But "drilled" troops will still be able to perform individual fire or make a standard move. And a third type of unit is "aggressive", if they fail a training test they must perform an uncontrolled charge at the nearest enemy! This leads to situations like at the Battle of Tamai where troops get bloodlust and dangerously break their formation.

Bigger Battles is on my list to play. I picked up the Steampunk rules which is a variation on it.
