I don't post a lot these days, and when I do it's a post starting a poject and that tends to be the last you ever hear of it.
....not this time.
I built the Sarissa Precision Guard Shack of their WW2 range somewhere last year, but with the move and everything it ended up in a box. I grabbed it out earlier this month when I noticed the roof had warped, and replaced it with a custom made one (see my Blog for details), and ordered chain for the gate I made using left over railing from the Sarissa 15mm Factory Boiler House. I basecoated it yesterday and did the basic colors, and completely finished it today in about 5 hours. To me, this is Wargames Quality, not what I usually try to do. But I've noticed no one sees the difference besides me, so why add another 5-10 hours, end up dissatisfied and put in a box never to be seen again?
This is a personal victory for me. I have so much stuff in boxes 3/4 done that is going nowhere, so it feels great to finish this. I had made a list of stuff I want to make for this project and basically have everything sitting in a box (same as the Last War project) and I'll do some more this weekend. I want to game dammit, and have nice stuff to game with.
Anyway, enough talk, here's my Guardshack, hope you like.

That turned out very well! The rusted chain and lock are especially good, but the whole thing has that great weathered look.

I was gonna say just about what he said. So while I agree with his sentiments, i won't repeat them... :D
-
That really does look exceptional. Good work on pushing through and completing it.
-
Stellar upgrade on that kit; lovely details and weathering.
-
lovely result

Wonderful work 8)
You might disparagingly call it tabletop quality, but that's where it will do its job anyway, and it's more than good enough for that! You've captured the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. vibe perfectly through the use of colour, shape and finish, so to me, it's an absolute win.
I've spent more than 2 months' worth of hobby time on a Frostgrave ruin earlier this year. Is it nice, and festooned with details? Absolutely. But does that add to the useability or atmosphere on the tabletop proportionally? Not really ::) Something about diminishing returns and all that.
Your project has none of those problems though :)
Keep 'em coming!
-
Looking good. The weathering on this is top shelf.
Chefs kiss.
-
Great job 8)
-
Absolutely brilliant work on improving a humble MDF shed to a really atmospheric piece!
I will follow this thread and your blog with great interest as I am a huge S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fan myself, as well as being very perfectionistic in terms of hobby stuff too (only getting over this very slowly).
-
I can only repeat what the others say: very atmospheric, very STALKER-ish. In one word, great ! :)
-
Great work - love the weathering 8)
-
Looks amazing and definitely well worth the time spent! :o

-
That is very good.
The rust bloat is extremely well done.
-
Thx guys, it was great fun, if incredibly taxing, to paint :) There should be more in the near future.
-
Yes, very nicely done. You've put more effort into detailing than I did with mine. I did the same as you with the brick pillars, changed them into posts.
-
It looks fantastic, love the details.
-
You stalkerized it very nicely!

Great minds think alike? :P
More progress. Currently cut 95% of the parts and slowly building up 5 metres of barrier fence for the project. I'm keeping the 25cm sections as clean as possible and will add variety with the 10cm sections, think broken parts, warning singns etc. I just realised I'm missing 4x 135 degree corners so I've put those on the list when I grab the saw again.
1 metre sure doesn't look like much.

But progress is progress.

Wow...those look incredible! :o But yeah, fenced compounds eat up space on the tabletop...!

Last week built 2 more buildings, added some minor details and after giving them a good coat of primer started adding color today. Now all packed up, most likely no time for them till the weekend, but progress is progress!

Those look quite good already, especially the detailing. I like the discoloration along the bottoms of the doors, a nice touch.

I get that a lot :) Maybe I should just do Modern gaming, less work, but I'm addicted to Post Apoc sceneryfor some reason and like to go the extra mile :)

The two overlap more than I'm comfortable with these days... :P
-
Hi Gunbird lovely work as always!
I used to love seeing your 20mm projects on the guild site.
-
Very nice.
-
Thx guys :)
Had a nice lazy painting afternoon with my girls, they painted a Space Marine (in my defence, they got them for free) and some Doplhins, and I made some good progress on the first Industrial sidebuilding. Still need to do the brickwork, add a doorknob, and find something to plaster on the giant blank spaces on the back and left.

Nice work on the Space Marines - looks like a new chapter. :)
The weathering is great. Looks like a long abandoned building.
-
Onwards....almost finished building (not painting) the fences. Another metre to go, then clean up all the sides and start basing, painting and tufting. I'm in it for the long haul (preferably before the end of this year).

Was sorting stuff after dropping the kids off at school and found a built and broke Sarissa Precision mobile flight control thingie....stuff?
A few moves ago it was crushed and all of the wheels and suspension snapped off. Shit happens.
But, after cleaning up the box and grabbing a bit of paper....
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjefjyhExvhxvmUIDEkbhCCc-DNO4xVGLePdwKNXUTIOfgjiHWX73DsUXVSGa-3wALRclyOUfMDPQ9CrJKajwd5QhxYCC687GjlTJ5XAKTbl3RNr_mtY_mmolsPb8pSY61166g-TswuxU3Ur34i_VCBj114G_nEwDGTSXuIcS8f225l-XMwK0YlYt0aav8k/s4080/1000015249.jpg)
....I have myself a plan for the weekend. After picking up the kids from school I decided to grab the tablesaw and foamcutter, an after some cutting and sanding I have the basics for a abandoned ramschackle flight control tower on a concrete base. I've tried out my polyurthane builders glue for the first time to see if it works as good as it promisses, but that has a 24 hour curing time. Tomorrow I'll rab some time to cut and sand the planks, build the steel doors to the cellar...bunker...whatever, and strip the wires for the exposed rebar on the (not visible in the photo) side. And find 2 suitable vents and maybe a light, and get some tin wire for the electrical connections.
Et voila, the start of a new POI :)

Good stuff! Your thread is good inspiration for my scratch-building I will be doing soon. :)

-
I really like this thread, you capture the essence of the Stalker aesthetics.
-
You seem to have found your momentum again.
And that looks to become another great addition to your S.TA.L.K.E.R. tabletop terrain collection 8)
Can't wait to see it completed!
-
Love the colour palette and rust work on this - beautiful.
-
Thx guys, appreciated :)
Did the steelframe and door on the cellar (recycling the lasercut card remains from other buildings to ensure straighter cuts that I can make), added 2 vents to the bunker (just sliced some off some 40K stuff) and did the rebar and concrete, though it felt a bit dry so it might not stick.

While cleaning, sorting and listing stuff for sale I ran into a incomplete box of 1/35 Italeri water trailer, and decided to build it instead of selling it (it would realistically only fetch maybe 3-4 euros anyway). A tad oversized, but hey, more water. Drilled out the pump and added thick solder for the hose, which I will drape naturally once all the glue and basing has set.

I'm aiming fot this look, but in very weatherd blue for the tank and Water in faded Cyrillic. Then make sure there are enough greens underneath and around it.

Can't wait to see the whole set finished, as I am a big fan of the STALKER videogames. Do you plan to make a milk tank after? ;)
-
Great project and I love fences…but those fences of yours would scramble my noodle! 🤪
-
Great to see you posting again Gunbird, I've gleaned a lot of inspiration from your work shared to this board over the years. I feel you on the "sacrifice perceived quality to get it finished" point, at the end of the day 'done' is better than 'measuring up to the standard in my head'. I'm currently going through a years-long backlog of 1/4-3/4 finished projects and just finishing them as efficiently as possible (likewise this stuff made several moves in incomplete states so I feel you there as well!). You're off to a great start with this project!
-
Great stuff 8)

I love the bunker doors attached to the building. Great idea!

Jog my memory for a minute, what specific milk tank do you have in mind? ( I like a challenge)

You could make that fuel tank into a kvass barrel. Most Soviet thing ever.

thx! Chap on the Stalker FB group told me as well, I had no idea of these things....so I went right out to the kit swapping group and managed to get 2 more sets that should be here next week. I''ll trim the tank and frame down a bit so the look is more like in the pic, but this will be made, I guarantee you.
It will do absolutely nothing on the table besides being a POI, but what a lovely POI it will be :)

Warlord order dropped in at dinner time yesterday, and whole the kids watched a movie in the evening I managed to get those done. Simple but nice kits, lift off roof, moveable door, really solid once built, 60mm round space for a HMG team inside if you need one. Pack comes with 2 concrete and 1 brick bunkers, and I only needed the 2 concrete ones for the perimiter...but had a brainwave mid the 2nd and made a transmitter base out of the third. Using a H0 metal power pylon and some strips of card from the card parts of the bunkers to make slats, turned the door upside down and slatted that as well. Minor cleanup needed tonight but otherwise ready for primer. All in all an evening well spent.

Nice work. That tank trailer could well be an anhydrous ammonia tank, too. Lots of farmers around here (in the States) have/use them.
In the US Army, we called them water Buffaloes...

Another one marked off, the first Russian monument. Tried some new stuff this time, worked really well, so my Beech seeds collection will now be retired.
How it started, a cheap 30 cent sports trophy made from a very hard resin, with an even bigger base (already removed in the picture) and the Tennis or something sticker in the circle replaced with a star.

The new thing I tried (again) was using the punch for fallen leaves. I tried this before but with paint, this time I used washes and the results are 100% better. Just a drop of wash, a drops or 2 of water, a drop of not Modge Podge and stir in a bunch of leaves. They tint and get sticky and you just place them. Repeat with different colours and mix them up a bit. As it all dries the edges of the leaves nicely ting dark adding to the overall effect.

That’s very well done! I like the tones in your concrete effect on the back of the monument, looks like it was done in 3 pours. The graffiti and fallen leaves give it a neglected, slightly morose feel, which fits a post apocalyptic scene really well (or a pre-apocalyptic scene where maintenance workers have just given up).
-
I lover the way you do the rust streaks! :-*
You make it sound very easy how you did the leaves. They certainly add a lot to the look. One of these days, I need to try that...

-
Very good.
-
Great idea and great execution, the paintjob works really well! (Plusmodel sells the famous Pripyat sign in various scales, I built the 1/35 one for my 1/35 Stalker project. But yours turned out better.) The only thing I would drop is the graffiti, it looks cool ofc, but a bit too modern for the "time stopped in 1986" stalker feel.
For the leaf puncher. I use mine on real leaves: you collect and press/dry them in books like we did in school. Then you can make leaves-coloured leaves.
-
Yes, the leaf cutter is a game changer. I tried it on real leaves a couple of years ago but the results weren't quite what I wanted. Using paper and washes gives me full control on their colours so I'm fully on board now.
Graffiti wise.....I get it, but most of my scenery pieces (Billboards always, buildings most of the time, other....it depends) get a bit of added personality, or a in memoriam for another lost friend.
This one won't get graffiti though.

Hope to have it done in the weekend.
-
Looking real spiffy there! 8)
The idea of the sports trophy is inspired, and the water tank is going to look gorgeous.
For leaves, I tend to use coffeefilters (the brown ones) onto which I have dripped diluted paints first, in autumny colours. This adds colour patterns which provide interesting patterns on the leaves when using the leaf cutter.
The filter paper really soaks up the paints and an added bonus is that there are no unforeseen white edges on the leaves. The paper also has a bit of a structure to it, adding to the overall look.
I have a 60x60cm Bushido board in the works for which I need to cut a couple of million leaves (or so it seems ::) ), as it will be an autumn forest board. I already wore out one leaf cutter (and part of my sanity lol )...
-
Thx!
As expected/planned, with the wash mix I have no white edges but a nice darker trim. I'll stick to using paper for now, plenty of half used sheets with my girl drawing a lot.
A whole board with them, even if it is just 60x60 :o .....rather you than me buddy!
-
A whole board with them, even if it is just 60x60 :o .....rather you than me buddy!
lol
I've since come to my senses and have settled for a covering of expired dried basil, mixed with the (smallish) tub of leaves I had already punched. Although I might make some more (it's been a while, so the mental scars have healed somewhat) when I make a start on finishing the board ;)
-
Your work is absolutely stunning! I am a big fan of the PC games and the way you paint and weather your terrain both fits with real pictures of the exclusion zone and the gritty look of those games.
The concrete effect is particularly well done! :-*
-
Wow, that water tank is also diorama quality.
-
That trailer does indeed look great!

Didn't feel it painting wise this weekend so grabbed a MDF kit from the stash, something I picked up in a sales lot I think as I don't recall ordering it from TT Combat.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuVc63lm9VoTc8HxyOM0AWv66xfvyO1FAZBVhUw4HxkRBIUegIVSrs2ihxpxMz2RjON9QBvh1XKkMdEeHbuglCaILxsZhBl16KPikOi0qci1agjN63m6ol5NFVhAdghah_gAUe6koupuomnKDNVMv9iZpGv2iGAInzFZLFhpPlAMHmeqxezAxijv-nHBNZ/s1920/462542719_515544884614553_2765449949307843844_n.jpg)
As it turns out it is now OOP and the instructions are no longer online. I've sent a request to TT for it, but a weekend only lasts 48 hours, and I've built a fair few MDF kits by now, so let's just do it.
It's rather basic, the fit is tight which meant the sliding doors didn't slide (so just fixed them in place) and the windows have only 2 tiny connection points as you could open them. But with no real way to fix them it feels a bit pointless, so I slid in strips of newspaper and doused it in superglue and these are now fixed forever. I decided to only upgrade the roof and the door and add some window sills. I could invest more time and energy to further improve it, but I have neither.
So, a nice saturday afternoon/evening later we changed the roof to a fibreboard one, raised the windows, used card to to improve the door and the rivits, and used scrap MDF from the kit to make the window sills. I'm not using the supplied walkway and I'll figure out how the crates have to be built someday. But she is primer ready now so that is my next job.
Pity they are OOP. They are basic, but cheap, and tart up nicely with some effort.

I vividly remember that warehouse. It was sitting on a hill in a remote area of the map and it was infested with hordes of zombies that just kept on coming. Down the hill there was a house, equally infested...
Great job there! As you can see; it's already evoking some S.T.A.L.K.E.R. memories, and it's not even painted yet!
-
Great work once again! The details like the rivets, the door handles and the little stard really makes this generic kit blend nicely with the atmosphere of the games. :-*
-
Very nice.
The extra details make it stand out.

Staple for a door handle...now why didn't I think of that?? :D
Awesome tip! Oh, and I just bought the exact same leaf punch you show in your picture at a convention this weekend. Will be trying it out one of these days with your and other posters' suggestions.
Can't wait to see the barn (with or without zombies) all painted up and ready for the tabletop.

I think this should work. Need to trim the end cap, but feels pretty natural.

Finished a barrier and some generic barrels. Barrier is a cut down 1/35 Italeri model (kit no 415) by trimming the posts. barrels are another succesful 50 cent challenge - the 4 wheel hubs from a toy buldozer glued together to make 2 barrels, based and weathered. Always useful.

Lifelesson: a fever, construction work outside your house and the finicky art of laying glass in your model house don't work. So i painted the crates (-1 that I managed to forget somehow) that came with the TT Combat Warehouse as generic scatter. Let's call it Tractor Parts. paints used (sans primer) included in pic. Really liking these better than the ones you can get with way over the top banding on the outside. Pity they are OOP, I'd like a few more.

So far, so good! Well done!
-
Great job on the new terrain, the signs really bring life to the crates.

Can't paint atm so built another building for the factory, this one will have a blueprint department on the top floor. Added another sloped roof with pressed fibreplates and it instantly changed everything. The 2 buildings are epoxied together after I did some proper cutting and sanding...once painted up I'll take better pics. Still a lot to do, lots of strips of paper to cut and glue on the steel doors, roof etc. Keeping the stairs and scratchbuilt shed seperate.
With my fever gone (knocks wood) and the kids on their last holiday-day before they go back to Kim I will not do more work on this but try and finish the tanker and the warehouse first. I've picked up a few more buildings for the Factory build to have enough to cover a 4x4 and then I can get to work on more scatter. After that the village across the road, but that's 2025 before I can get stuck in (at my current pace)

Can't wait to see it painted! :)

Yes, it already looks quite good! All of the paint jobs so far have been excellent, so I’m quite excited to see how this turns out. This whole project is inspiring.

Thx guys,appreciated! :D
After questioning my sanity to glaze the next building with tiny squares of glass (which took about a week of thinking...) I decided to cherish my sanity, do the final detailing and call it a day. Plenty of other stuff to finish for this build and I really need not chastise myself too much like that with a gazillion tiny squares of glass.
On with the next!

1st of the set of bunkers for the perimiter. I wanted this one to be a bit wilder in looks but also serene. It is from the Sarissa set of 3 Pillboxes, "British Pill Box Set N089". Simple, easy to build, looks the part.
Tufts used from various sources, mostly Greenstuff World this time. Hope you like!
"To the Stalkers Perimiter Bunker 1.06 is known as the Icon Bunker. Its door is always open for those in need of a dry place to rest, and exudes a calmness not often encountered in the Zone."

-
Lovely work on those buildings. Well done!
-
Great additions!
-
Yeah, the painted versions of the buildings look excellent, great weathering to give them a post-apocalyptic look!
-
First of all your builds are stunning.
One quick option on small windows like that would be Testors clear parts cement. If you cover all the window edges using a cocktail stick, you can then swirl the stick around the edges to create a bubble inside the frame. That will dry clear. As long as you don't overload the edges with too much glue it will look just like a real pane. Here is a link to show the basic technique.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TemNWtCay7I (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TemNWtCay7I)
-
Now THAT is dedication! Creating each individual window pane...! lol
Mike Demana
-
I'd do it :D
-
Good idea! If only I had time... :)
-
Well, I have a greenhouse that I cut out each individual pane for. After 3 years it's still not finished...so....
As soon a this blasted Nurgle infection is gone I'll give Krystal Klear a go that arrived this weekend.

I felt I was lacking a small depot building with a few small rooms, but no one makes what I want. So I ordered a Small workshop from the Gangs of Rome series from SP and that arrived this afternoon. I just finished cleaning up the table and the tools and I'm calling it 99% done, will add some electrical switches/cabling when I have some free time again. I've added a pic for reference to see how it scales with the rest. Roof will be fibreboard with a smashed section on the right side, the awnings will be tinned sheet so I can have a go at rusting, especially the section on the right. The extended baseplate will be painted as concrete slabs. No idea when I have the time for it but hopefully this year.
Oh, as a mate pointed out....great to change into workshops in a Vietnamese or Chinese alley as well. Might make another one someday in Cyberpunk style. Just sell that kidney first for funds.

Wow...you work FAST! :o
I like the damaged section -- great start!
Mike Demana
-
that's a very handy little building...
-
That is a very useful transformation.
Nice work.

Cracking thread, I was struggling for inspiration beyond the obvious crumbling military/industrial complex for my Z.A terrain, so I will be plundering your ideas - that workshops great.
-
Great stuff mate
Cheers
Matt
-
Nice work indeed. I too like that damaged one...
-
Can't find my box of 3D printed lights,so work on the workshops has halted. Everything has halted while the builders are hacking and breaking and swearing all day anyway, so did not get a lot of hobby time in. Just not feeling it....stress, fun.
But yesterday my Warbases order dropped in the mail and got to work on the sheds. The most important and essential of scenery pieces, the shed.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVcOu86_x1oWia0k1HKaVgPEXLiDRf12nRvGoZrLh8eH5HQHASKkRUPj1_0sBQ-c5RbbNuEvY04XBT8m0lw1JNvLnUf3KxXygzTrnWHzDscFSgRN1IiMKvoQtynoFXg_Ap0f2CZNSz6IKdbghjvM7tK1eRMT8X8anaRetX8DrQ-2yftWxIbqia3K0RDDnR/s2040/Afbeelding%20van%20WhatsApp%20op%202024-11-13%20om%2020.12.03_d5dfb8ae.jpg)
Added strips of card to the smaller one, just finished doing the same to the other. The greenhouse got a ledge from scrap MDF as it felt a bit empty, and I will cut up some beads for plant pots. Added some bigger beads underneath as they looked a bit like the pots my grandpa had in his greenhouse that used to store stuff in.
They build up allright. Would have been nice to have a floor in the sheds that actually locks in with some nubs instead of glueing in like a loose piece, but it works. I did leave out the MDF window in the smaller one and replaced it with some scrap MDF. Left out the door as well, I will make one from scratch and put it on the floor.
The buildings feel a bit smaller than the Sarissa ones. The doors on the sheds are about the same size as some doors from Sarissa, but the garage doors on another kit are a good 1cm lower. It's ok, they are meant to be mixed and matched anyway. The doors are more solid as they are 2mm MDF and not cardboard like Sarissa (but the one in the greenhouse is cardboard).
Overall, a nice addition. Wait time was long but not due to Warbases, they shipped pretty fast. Dutch Customs and PostNL dropped the ball hard taking almost 3 weeks to deliver it to me and in the last week sending me daily updates like "We will be delivering between 13:30 and 17:30 today" followed by "Oops, we didn't make it, stay tuned for updates". 5 days in a row, I kid you not. Anyway....
I'd really like a few more of those lean on Greenhouses for my Russian village, as after (always after, of course) building it I realised the opening is on the wrong end for the house I have it planned for. Easily sorted if I get another, the brickwork will be on the inside then but the outside can be weatherd concrete then :)
Warfare is this weekend, might ask a mate to pick up 3 more and take them back when he is back over here.
The order had some office buildings, a workshop and some other bigger stuff for Stalker and 0200 Hours (and God knows what else more) but you should see those soon enough.
-
Finished a shed for my Stalker build but will work for my Moderns and Post Apoc collection just as well. Even did a review on it over at my Blog. Nice little kit, works for anything slightly modern and beyond. Bit different from the Sarissa kits, doors feel a bit smaller but after adding some details nice none the less.

Nice work.

All your buildings are well made and inspiring! :)
-
Fantastic scenery, very well done.

Thx guys :)
Keeping up the tempo, here is another shed from Warbases.
Nice solid little kit. 4 walls, section with a door, section with the window, and roof and floor. Build time was a good 20 minutes, I left out the door and the window and replaced it with a card door. No windowframe as I wanted something different and put in a section of cut off MDF sprue. Added windowsills as usual. Paintwork was about 2-3 hours, most of that on the weathering and the leaves and drying time. Went for the abandonded look with lots of muck and moss. Shoudl fit in any of my gaming interests.
Cracking little thing, works for any table, everyone needs at least one shed. 8/10

Looking great, my favourite is the rotten door!

That is very good. I do like the interior very damp and dingy.

Yes, that rotten door does look the part.

Just discovered this thread.
Love the weathering!

Just finished the upgrade of the Warbases Brick Workshop. Styrofoam offcuts for the roof and dormer, cardboard and newspaper for the roof, scrap MDF for other details and some milliput and staples for the win.

Hope to get primed and painted somewhere this weekend.

that's great, is it based on something from the game? that original seemed more than suitable to the theme...

No, just my own idea and trying out new things. I want it to fit in with the rest of the buildings, so this type of roof was chosen. The dormer was just a fun addition to break up the roof. I am watching footage of the new game though, for inspiration :)
-
There's a new one? :o
Great work on the workshop. With your painting, this will fit in witht he rest of your terrain perfectly :)
+++EDIT+++ I just checked out the website for the new Heart of Chornobyl game, and it looks fab. I also just upgraded my PC this very week, and the game's requirements fall very much within the new specs (and then some ;) ). I've been a huge fan of the previous games, so this might be a must-have. Also; according to the site, it's scheduled for release today (nov 20th)!
This might have an impact on my hobby productivity... lol
-
Nice idea, look forward to seeing it painted.

Great job buddy, everything looks ace!

@Daeothar - having fun yet? Seen the sun rise in the morning and thought......Oops? lol
Thx guys. Been focussing on clearing more stuff but grabbed a nice lazy painting session.
Another set of crates finished, all of these are from Red Vectors, and some have banding added using thin card. Markings copied from various munitions crates. Except Killroy of course. Though he seems a bit changed in the zone....
Went a bit more agressive on the highlights and tried a few techniques to see which I liked most, and glued a few together to make placement a bit quicker (all the stacked ones are glued together).

Those crates look good. Nice job...
-
They do look good. (Relatively) small details like crates and stuff add a lot to games. You can do without clutter, but having it on the table helps set the mood.
-
You can never have too many crates! And they're good for just about any period... :D
Look great...I like that you take the time to add your own banding. That's dedication for scatter pieces!
Mike Demana
-
Very nice.
Nice details.

Took a step back today to put toys on the table to see where I am at. Been finding all manner of stuff in my attic and online and decided a bit of refocus was in order, and a nice weekend off with the kids. After this pic I packed it all up in RUB's and they won't come back out till monday for the next painting session.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS-sxbnEEedkghQEy_oc8sDuiEbr6ke97KInc2E8nVPn1ZjmTfI1xpLyjly9AhwuGyJMO5FAZqIBtw5_ZxZTAbkWbwuHiJBDCQAUevjVgnULpb48nfm0ewnwTgT9FfmuxzTOL2mb0Y4lRK3fhazFz6bwL8tIVSO7iQklxCky8Ib98Go-ik8XhlaC3uf68z/s2048/465378336_10165012974475620_8844283990887021190_n.jpg)
5 items fully finished now (exclusing all of the crates), 5 PIP's with various issues, the main one being slight swelling of the MDF so the nubs don't fit no more and I need to sort that with some judicious sanding before I continue. I have more than enough pieces now for the factory/research area, and some bits for the village across the street from the area I'm working on have also snuck in. All of those will be dropped further down the list, factory comes first. Research area second, village third.
And now for a well deserved, hobby free long weekend with the kids.
-
@Daeothar - having fun yet? Seen the sun rise in the morning and thought......Oops? lol
A very busy period at work has prevented me from falling for that old trap; I must be getting wiser with age. Yeah, right lol
To protect myself, I've held off buying the game for now. I keep my digital hours filled with a cute little cozy game titled Tiny Glade. It's like Minecraft's Creative Mode, but pretty. And cute. But very versatile and I can see myself using it to design fantasy buildings for me to recreate in foam later on :)
And that's quite the collection you've amassed so far. And when painted to your usual standard, a table full of terrain like that will be a sight to behold!
Enjoy your weekend out of the glue fumes :D

My bad health intervened and I took a bit more time off.
Missed out on last nights online painting session due to a massive migraine, and my boardgame buddy dropped out tonight so grabbed some stuff on the table and got to work. In the end I only managed to finish a few more crates, and after putting them in the box with the rest of what I have painted sofar I really need to get going with making foam strips covered with tarp to quickly fill up a warehouse. My painting speeds is just to slow to get this box filled otherwise.
Still, pretty chuffed with these.
The white crate is for 0200 Hours. I tried to paint Eigentum der Wehrmacht, fucked up, and just added Streng Geheim. The joys of not breathing and using a 00 brush aka how to make your issues more severe....but at least the result is nice :)

I started work on this Warbases Groundsman's hut cause I really need yet another shed. Called it a day on the 30th, and just had a nice relaxing online group painting session. Mostly done, glazing and inside is for later this week, and then we can add another finished piece to the collection.

I like the lock. Excellent.

And the shed is done :)
Lovely bit of kit from Warbases.co.uk., the Groundsman's Hut WW2-GMH. Works for a many period, as a hut, a shed, a tiny dwelling, new or ruined and anything in between.

Yep; that works beautifully 8)
What I really like about your buildings is the way you keep the interiors sparse to bare, but there's still a hint of atmosphere. Like the vines growing in, accentuated by the mossy green colour in the corner :)

This shed looks so real! :-*

Cool! The vine and the mildew look great.

Agreed -- those vines and mildew look fantastic... :-*

Thanks a bunch :) I prefer to keep the insides empty to have more room to do things with them later, like slot in stuff. Eventually. Some day. If ever.
Had some spare time and did more work on the Radio Bunker. Still need to do the inside, base, radio tower and final detailing, but this looks the part nicely sofar.

After a trip to IKEA with one of my daughters I nabbed a small cardboard tube and changed it into a Russian well that evening. Tonight we had our weekly online painting session and I got it 3/4 of the way. Final weathering, detailing and basing to be done....tomorrow....questionmark?

@ Michi.....looking delightedly slithery!
Something very simple, not weatherd but just functional - changing a small teabag box into a dice box for my Zona Alfa dice and (future) markers, just to keep it all together for convenience. Teabox was 20 cents at the Goodwill, sticker was 1,38 euros from Uncle Alie and the dice I just grabbed from my way too large box of dice. KISS and all that.

A 3D printed T-34/76, painted and all. barrel is a bit natty but for 5 euros, I'm not complaining. I'll make a concrete base, doodle it up Sovjet style, weather the heck out of it, and tadaa, hard cover for a village center of army base.

I've had my eye on this for a while, so 20 euros for both the ship and harbour dock section? Yes please. Plenty of ships in the river near Chornobyl. Well, the ones that haven't sunk yet by now.

2 Apartment buildings from Knights of Dice, 25 each. Knights of Dice is out of business if I'm not mistaken, and these will perfectly for both Stalker and my Post Apoc collection, even if I need to buy completely different Really Useful Boxes for them as they are huge 3 story buildings.

Sarissas Ambassadors Residence lower left, not a small building by itself.
I think, once I set myself to it....a good 2 months per building to get them up to snuff in my style. maybe cut in a few more doors in the inside so it looks more research centre/officy.
And I bought a few more items but nothing that concerns this project. When (if) my health improves a bit I'll get right on these :)

In my defence, I didn't know untill I got home and found out who made them, then hit myself for not grabbing the third one as well. Trying to contact the seller now so I can toss it into my Cyberpunk pile i think.
Plinth wise, way ahead of you, already did one in 15mm in 2018 or something, will copy the same idea but a tad less massive. Luckily there are tons of examples to be found online for inspiration.

I have one of those container ships! I'm sure you will do a much better job making it look weather-beaten and rusty -- look forward to seeing it finished!

-
Well done. I specially like the dice box, and love those buildings.
-
@Mike - Thank you! I'm ordering another one before the price rise in April, I think I will get the full length one as it womes with useful bits of kit. Sadly the dock sections are OOP, like a lot of the good TT Combat stuff I have sadly. Wish they would not do that but I expect those things weren't great sellers then.
@ Dan - Thx!
I picked up a Zitterdes resin cast 79086 Barrels on a Pallet up at a 50% off sale last week, primed it black and sat down for a lazy sunday afternoon paint hour. Nothing earthshattering but good bit of scatter cover. They do feel a bit big to me but that just means I get to use the plastic 1/35 plastic barrels as well that I have plenty of. Blck primer, sponged on blues, white, brown and a bit of orange, weathering with washes and wet paint and added paper punched leaves, trying out my new Pro Canadian punch for XXL leaves. As the Maple leaf is obnoxiously big compared to the rest of the regular leaves, I think it fits.
Simple, basic, a fun hour spent.
Pics are not up to my usual standard, but my left eye is really bad atm so I can't really tell if it is not great por just meh photography, for which i apolagise. Oh, and Zitterdes is now defunct I believe so this model is OOP.

Love the barrels and leaves. I just started experimenting with using a pack of leaves I purchased at a gaming convention. They add a nice little accent to the flocking. I also have a leaf punch. What material do you use, and how do you prepare it so there isn't a tell-tale white edge?
Mike Demana
-
Love the barrels.
You have given me a great idea with the T-34 on a plinth. Couple of notable spots around Berlin where these were present.
Yes, sadly Knights of Dice are OOP. Viv shuttered the business a year or two back. Doubbly annoying as I live about a 10 to 15 minute drive from their factory.
-
@ Mike - I'm making a short tutorial about that somewhere this week(end) as you are not the first to ask, and it is really simple. For the smaller leaves I use plain printer paper or any letter that would get shredded otherwise. For the bigger leave I use government envelopes and paper as those tend to be better quality, but for the 2 Maples I used someones business card that I found. The treatment for all is the same though.
@Carlos - by sheer coincidence I found my 15mm plinth I made years ago while rummaging in my storage locker today. The original T-34 has long since gone missing but it is easy enough to replace.....if it wasn't for the fact I don't actually need a 15mm T-34 on a plinth atm. I'll shoot some pics this week.

Your scenery looks fantastic, really well done.
I'm also a bit jealous of your Matakishi dice :)

You could try asking Paul if he has some for sale? It's the only one I own so I'm not selling it :P
While clearing out parts of my storage I stumbled across my old scratchbuilt Pripyat sign, back in early 2013. When I could still easily cut out plasticcard letters, in my pre car crash days. As none of the pics survived the Photobucketlypse I might as well do a quick reshoot and put the sign in the Stalker box. I made it for 20mm, so it is underscale, but it still works. Back then, all I had to go on was a single picture so the back is pure fantasy.
28mm figure for sale reference.

Having visited Pripyat, I like to go back and look at some of my photos just for proper Post-Apoc inspiration. The sign looks very Soviet -- nicely done.
Oh, the visit is on my other blog, the travel one:

You just have to get past that first big ad and travellerspoint is fine... :D

That would explain the faint glow you give off in darkened settings. You can assure the wife that the microwave isn't faulty after all. lol
Gimmick for a convention participation game: Give everyone a fake dosimeter and play some geiger counter sounds.
BTW our friend Patrick at Patrick Miniatures produces a range of suitable gear for Pripyat and surrrounds, including the famous sign.

Some of these might work https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/tiny-fx-w?variant=53485434831227 (https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/tiny-fx-w?variant=53485434831227) with a speaker, controlled via a 'phone or tablet.
BTW our friend Patrick at Patrick Miniatures produces a range of suitable gear for Pripyat and surrrounds, including the famous sign.

Interesting stuff, vernacular architecture Soviet style.

On my tour to Chernobyl, we were given the choice of renting a Geiger counter. I chose not to do so. However, when our van made the turn towards the reactors, all of them in the vehicle started going off simultaneously. It was very sobering briefing, too, from the guide. He told us not to touch any vegetation, and even gave me a hard time later when I got down on one knee to get a better shot.
When he talked about how little time each worker is supposed to stay there before being transferred out, that was interesting, too. And the fact that the reactor is still there, encased in concrete, spewing radiation...scary stuff! :o

With everything not primed boxed up I've regained (a bit of ) focus so this hobby night the Radio Bunker came back onto the table. In the run up I've added a big ass magnet in the top of the mast, with copious amount of superglue and paper it is in there forever. Made a sign to go on top (MDF round base with a hole drilled into the side and a nail inserted), put on my usual Red Star and primed it. I also made a base insert for the Bubker to fit the backstory I have written for it. I chose to go the hard way, brass wire and aluminium tubing instead of just using plastic but I could not be bothered to get up 2 flights of stairs at that moment :) Only partially human after all :P

Basic paints are on, but more weathering to go, foliage, debris etc which I plan to do somewhere in the weekend. I really need to finish this and move on to the next items in the box that need to be finished.

Nice radio mast. :-*
Oddly enough, I've just done the same thing. I cheated though, I found a model railway lighting tower thingy for $10 and added some plastic rod and a couple of cone shaped receiver/transmitter thingummies.
-
Yup, did the same when I made my first pieces of Cold War scenery, works like treat (lot's of railroad stuff actually). This one is more the pre micro wave era, so just a basic steel tower. No metal support cables though, those won't last with me around
-
Looking spiffy again! 8)
In a corroded, dilapitaded way that is ;)
-
The red star sign... *chef's kiss*
-
I like how realistic your weathering is. How did you achieve the rusted look of the sign?
-
Hi SM,
I used a bit of sponge to sponge on a chalky grey-white craft paint onto the MDF base, 2 coats, and let that dry. Then Vallejo Panzer Red Oxide with a sponge across the star. Then a thinned Vallejo Dark Grey wash around the star for added depth (not that it worked this time but meh). Then Vallejo Flat Brown with, you guessed it, a sponge across everything. Then with yet another sponge add some of the original chalky white back on here and there.
The streaks are Vallejo Rust Wash, add a stripe, rub down with your finger, repeat. Once that is done use the same wash a few lines on the main rust areas, and use a damp brush to feather it out on the bottom of the stripe.
No thinner or enamels or other harmfull stuff needed, dries really fast so easy to get a lot done in one sitting.
If you make sure the paints have a slight bit of water in them after getting a drop from the bottle, the sponge does the work of colour variation for you. Any kind of sponge works, I use the stuff from blister packs, scrap foam inserts from carry boxes, washing up sponges, make up sponges to give variation when needed.
Also, don't be neat. Embrace the chaos and decay. It's easy once you let go of your normal brush style (or as in my case get reumatoid arthritis and find using sponges to be much easier on my hands) and just go with it.
-
Sweet work. I often struggle with decaying metalwork, and end up using the same tried and tested method I always use…so that all look the same. Going to use your ideas though I think next time.
-
Thanks for walking us through the process! I'll try it next time I need to do rust.
-
To quote a certain movie:"Good luck, we are counting on you" :) and I'm looking forward to your results.
Had a bonus few hours today so grabbed my foam cutter to get the concrete blocks for the base supports for the 2 power line pylons. This left me with a bit of scrap foam, so grabbed a quick inspiration pic and cut the leftovers into a suitable bus stop. It's just a test for a more elaborate future one, so I winged it a bit for sizes.
So, the base idea.

After just winging it by eye, the parts. Not a lot :)

(in the background the whole reason for getting out the foamcutter to begin with. Added concrete blocks as I'm used to seeing in local marshy areas around here, which fits the location for the game I suppose)
Next up is basing, filling in the cracks, adding the posts for the bench etc. I've compressed the model a bit compared to the real one. Might even get it painted this weekend, if I have the stamina for it. It'is not a huge project or anything and a nice bit of filler. The colourscheme is nice but a bit too cheerful for the game, so I will tone that down and delve deep in my good old Sovjet propaganda box.
The only thing I'm still thinking about is what name to add to the front, or just for go for a number. Most likely the latter, or just the word Factory, ???????. Suitably weatherd, of course.
-
Nice! :-* When functional items are so ugly they become beautiful. The Soviets were very good at this.
We must be doing the same project in a parallel universe. You are doing Eastern bloc bits and bobs, I just knocked out a couple of West Berlin bus stops a month or two back. I'm now just waiting for the horrendously expensive diecast MAN bus in authentic BVG period livery I ordered from China.
Just remember Don't Stop! Do the Bus Stop!
-
Nice 8)
It certainly has the vibes of the bus stop in the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, in the Cordon area. I could only quickly find this picture, which is not very clear, but it's certainly gloomier than your reference pic.Sadly it won't let me hotlink, so I'll just leave the link to its fandom page here:
Bus stop (https://stalker.fandom.com/wiki/Bus_stop)
And I really like this picture too. It almost fooled me into thinking it was a real photograph ::) :
(https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcguide.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F11%2FStalker-2-screenshot-2.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=a7e64bf013d8afbdfb2ec40bed9583f748001da96c9382b77a5c9b290072d685)
And 'Factory' or 'Station' would be a perfectly fine text on its top; nice and generic :)
-
I assumed it was real at first, the colors are what you'd get from a photograph and nothing about it is that off.
-
@Daeothar: That's a nice one. Would use up a ton of plasticcard, so that would be a nice one for a 3D print.
I do like the blue lower line. Might copy that.
But not today. After having a door smash to pieces that took a lot of effort and time to pick up, and then my glasses snapping when I finally got to sit down after cleaning up the mess, this weekend is one to just......ugh. Makes me feel I want to get a stiff drink, and I don't drink.

Oh well, at least I have monday evenings online painting group session to look forward to :)
-
I had the glasses come apart on me like that about two years ago, used super glue to put it back together until the replacement pair was ready.
Hope things get better for you.
Also, Garrison Brothers Texas Bourbon. You will thank me later if you can get it.
-
Thx SM. In the end I managed it without. Glasses still not fixed though.
Radiation signs. I made loads when I did this in 20mm, with brass pins, plasticcard signs covered with Hasslefree decals I picked up back then. And destroyed them all when the case top buckled on top of them. So, a quicker and less costly methode for 28mm. 20mm MDF bases, toothpicks and laserprinted signs.

As a big fan of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and rusty surfaces in general, this thread is an absolute treat to go through. I am kind of jealous of what you are building. You are nailing the vibe perfectly! Looking forward to one day seeing a full table shot, with minis and all.
-
Thanks Daniel, appreciated :)
I hope to finally have a game on it somewhere in Q4 of this year. Hopefully....
-
Very well done, Johan! :-*
Helpful and protective signage is always crucial on certain gaming tables... lol

Ha, Michi, like people actually pay attention to signs, let alone read them :P
Right.....
EDIT: LAF Formatting doesn't understand Cyrillic, noted!
Translation:
"I,Stremousov, Kirill, joining the ranks of the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin All-Union Pioneer Organization, in the presence of my comrades solemnly promise: to passionately love and cherish my Motherland, to live as the great Lenin bade us to, as the Communist Party teaches us to, as require the laws of the Pioneers of the Soviet Union.
After a short pause, it started again, with a different name. Over and over and over....
Oleg turned off the receiver of his headset. Using any kind of radio in this area was useless, the continuous transmission burned through any channel he switched to, the transmitter was just too powerful. At least you knew you were getting close to the deserted Young Pioneer Camp. It would be a dry place to rest and recover for a bit with some food and heat, and very welcome it was.
He turned to Dimitri and Mikhail. "We will stay for one night, no more. Keep your radio's off, save the batteries, using them here is useless. We will leave again at sunrise. no iffs, or butts.
The young men looked confused, but knew better then to go against the old man. Oleg had seen most of the Zone and had been here for years. They, mere weeks.
<the team spends the night at the camp and moves out at sunrise>
While on the trail, Mikhail pointed out to a rusty metal tower between the trees, just a bit beyond the path. "What is that?", he asked. Oleg stayed silent for a second, then explained it was the transmitter for the messages flooding all the channels. No need to go there, we need to press on. "But.." Mikhail said, "We could turn off the power, stop the transmission, clear the airwaves!". Oleg wanted to explain, but then just said: "Follow me"
Clearing the brambles, the team approached the transmitter. The base was a hexagonal brick bunker, with a rusty steel door, slightly ajar, weeds and flowers surrounding it, trash and rusted equipment littering the concrete pad beside it. A electrical buzz hung in the air, something with a lot of power. No other noise could be heard, no birds, not even the rustling of leaves in the wind.
Oleg looked at Mikhail and Dimitri. "Go check it out. I know it is a safe place, but just see for yourselves". The two stared at each other, and made their way to the door of the bunker. Getting closer they could almost taste the static in the air, tingling the hairs on the back of their necks. The door opened with remarkable easy, and they stared inside the small, dark, cramped bunker. It was empty, damp, musky, with some plants growing in through a window. Their eyes slowly adjusted to the dark and then it revealed itself.
There was nothing there! No equipment, nothing! There had been something, at some point, as the stubs of the cut cables still stuck out of the concrete, but there was nothing now. Dimitri switched on his headset and regretted it instantly. It was painfully loud! The pain made him pull the receiver from his ear with a yelp. "...Pioneer Organization, in the presence of my comrades solemnly promise: to passionately love..." reverbed bounced off the walls of the bunker before he switched off the headset. He stared in amazement at Mikhail. And Mikhail stared back, white as a sheet.
As they walked back out of the bunker, Oleg was standing there. In a almost fatherly voice he said: "I could have told you, but would you have believed me? Best to see it with your own eyes. The Zone still has many mysteries, and this is one of them. Now, let's make haste, we have a few more hours to go before we get to our destination and having every hair on my head singed with all of this static isn't making me any prettier".
He chuckled, and then let out a good laugh. Tension broken, Mikhail and Dimitri laughed as well. Relieved, they headed back on the trail, leaving the Radio Bunker behind them. As they broke from the forest edge, and walked into the sunshine, Oleg felt the sun warm his big bald head.
Switching his headset back on, all the channels were clear except one, which still, very faintly, repated the same message over and over, with a new name every time.
Time to move on. Time to head deeper into the Zone.
The Radio Bunker (or Transmitter Pillbox, both work)
It's a Sarissa Precision British Pill Box from their set of 3 British Pill Box Set
I blocked off 3 of the slits anc added slats, turned around and reversed the door so it has vents on the lower part. The door still works. I used the insert that comes with it to add the cables, made from aluminium tubing and brass wire. It is removable so I can swap it out in the future, if I have a need for it. Added a collection of tufts, leaves and a decent paintjob. The top is a metal H0 tower for supporting overhead lines for scale trains. Magnet imbedded in the top, and a round MDF base with a nail in the bottom. Card punch for stars.
This was the 2nd bunker of the set of 3.

Looking great!

And a very cool story describing what’s uncanny about the tower and broadcasts! It reminds me a bit of something posted a month or two ago in the Call of Cthulhu board, about points of interest markers for When Nightmares Come. The model was a TV set with a broken screen that wasn’t plugged in and was still glowing. It evokes a vibe similar to this “ghost” radio tower, it’s not necessarily dangerous, but it is weird and shouldn’t exist.

Thx PM, the POI's are exactly what I am going for. They are easy to add in and with a good backstory fit right into the narrative.
As soon as I finish parts of the Young Pioneers Camp I will be expanding on this background story.

That is very good.
It has inspired me to get a pill box(a Warbases one) for something similar (plus Quatermass*).

That is very nice! I love how you take something and re-purpose it, fancy it up, weather it, and it looks like a real thing!

The further along I got into reading the episode reviews, the more I got convinced scriptwriters did drugs. A lot of drugs.
Though at first I thought you meant this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Quatermain
Main.....Mass.....close enough

I found this statue I made for my 20mm Stalker stuff back in the age of the dinosaurs. I stripped off the beech seeds and replaced them with my current leaves technique. I have no idea where the model came from, it is metal, 1/35 and that is all I remember. Base is a few MDF discs stacked together covered with filler, and sanded.
Good enough, now on with the rest of the stuff.

I love seeing and building statues as dressing for the gaming table, although I would alwayys weather bronze to the limit - particularly if it was a remnant in a deserted area of a post apocalytic radiation zone like yours... :D
From my point of view it is only shiny if regularly touched or climbed on (like it's the case in playgrounds, parks or anywhere else, where it is not protected artistic exhibition.

Well the figure looks to have a ww2 army uniform so pick a name - quite a few women were recognised and may have had statues - Maria Oktyabrskaya of "Fighting Girlfriend" fame was the first I thought of but there are many others.

You are of course quite correct....but I just could not be bothered with this one. I have a few more unpainted statues to go and thoe will get that treatment

Those bunkers are brilliant :-*

very usefull, though for items of this nature I want to lean more on my own 3D printer, shipping being more and more untennable, price wise.
-
The climbing frames (and probably the whole playground) stl files are available on cults 3d and my mini factory for $3 for the set of 4. Easy to find.
-
Nice statue! I use a bronzed Russo-Japanese War soldier on a plinth for my games.
-
Yeah, they are nice to add POI on your table :)
My first home made 3D print painted, a lovely outdoor shitcan. I've put all of the details on my Blog with links and the lot in case you are interested. I did replace the roof with my usual ribbed card to tie it in better. This will be the first of a fair few so I can mix and match with the various WIP houses I have.

Nice (not that I wiuld want to use it.)

Nice dunny!

Love your work, particularly your terrain.
-
Love the vegetation growing up the side and the weathered look to the green paint. Great job!

A cosy little place to be! :D

A great addition to any post apocalyptic settlement, much better than crapping in the woods.

IT'S A TRAP!
If there ever was one, it's the shithouse with a bottomless shaft underneath...
-
Or snakes. I once killed a three foot Eastern Brown snake with a shovel in an out door bog. Redback spiders also seem to have a certain fondness for outdoor loos. So much so it became immortalised in song hereabouts.

You ain't kiddin'! One modern game I ran several years ago featured a porta-potty that ended up being a bad guy spawn point. It spawned several bad guys. Musta been a disguised tunnel entrance...
-
Dirty job but someone has to do it.
The thunderboxes we had on exercises usually covered a hole that would fit an infantry section, so I guess it's possible. lol
-
Thx guys, that all sounds very......get it away from me :P
More a proof of concept than anything else, printed these crosses off yesterday and just finished them within 24 hours, varnish and all. These testers came out fine I think. The rough finish at the back is from the buildplate and works great for rough concrete, as does not using the iron fucntion on the front so you get a tad more detail that pops out when painting.

A good idea to add some white flowers at the rear of the biggest cross: a litte bit of melancholy... Very atmospheric in a STALKER way! :)

Excellent.
