Back in January of last year I posted some photos of my 54mm WWII figs, then in their early stages. Since then I have completed an American platoon at 1/1 scale, and got a small force of Germans done. Then I revisited the first batch of buildings I had made and refurbished them and added to their number. My aim being to create a small Normandy village for street fighting scenarios. With Mike Blake joining us here, the 54mm Skirmish God, I thought I would update you with progress so far. I am just going to post the pics rather than comment on each one. Hope you guys like them.
First off there will some atmosphere pics of the village, then some combat scenes showing all the new guys in action.

Spectacular! :o May I ask what manufacturer(s) you use (plastic, I assume, but you never know)?
-
Gosh - brilliant! Wonderfully done in so many ways :o
Love the rubble-fest and the buildings are beautifully done. Great wallpaper.
One teensy criticism... Did WW2 Germans really wear greatcoats quite that bright green? (Or maybe that's just the camera doing something odd to your greens)
-
Absolutely awesome layout. The big toys do have a charm of their own. :)
-
A few facts I ommitted. The figures are mainly Conte plastics, with some Toy Soldiers of San Diego, and one lone Airfix: Their classic German officer, an icon from my childhood that I could not resist adding. The vehicles are Forces of Valour with a repaint and stowage etc added, apart from the jeep which was found in the shop at Bovingdan Tank museum, I just added some paint.
Cap'n I think the photo made that green look worse. I looked at a lot of colour pics of the time, and tried to match the green that was shown for German greatcoats, I had always assumed they were Field Grey, but all the colour material showed it as a green similar to my effort. Of course that could have been the colour film stock of the time creating that effect. Not having seen one in the flesh I am not 100%. But having said that, I did use a little artistic licence because I thought it contrasted better with all that filed grey.

Yes, I spotted him :)
Still looks pretty good doesn't he? Always an excellent figure.
Like I say, a lovely spread. Churlish of me to mention the bright green coats really - sorry about that. They just stood out a bit! ;)
-
Cap, no apology needed or sought. I do now wonder if I should tone that green down a tad, because you are right it does photograph a bit too bright.
-
Awesome pix Trooper.
-
Very nice.
I suppose you would be after some British infantry for Normandy too?
Helen
-
Helen, obviously when I started this project I would have preferred troops from the old country, but I couldn't find any good enough to be considered, or with sufficient variation. However I do have a family connection with the US troops as my uncle served with 3rd Infantry Div. in France in '44, then he came home and my my aunt a GI bride.

One thing that does stand out at this scale is that the M3 halftrack looks far less 'spacious' (which was the case) at this scale than the smaller ones, where it is almost akin to a 'stretch-limo' for some reason. :?
-
A good point there Jim. I can remember, on my first visit to Bovingdon, thinking how small the tanks and AFVs actually were, compared to the impression you get from wargaming stuff.
-
Brilliant pictures. The board alone is a work of art, but the figures...I have a huge soft spot for 54mm models simply because of the level of detail it allows for and you've used that to maximum effect.
:)

Fantastic! :-*

absolutely beautiful!
The scale and your photographs really convey the feeling of close quarters city fighting.
-
I'm really attracted to the idea of 54mm gaming... maybe not WW2 as I have 28mm already, but you have certainly got me keen for trying some of my own.
Thanks heaps for sharing this it looks great!
-
wonderful minis and wonderful pictures..... maybe using super-quality-tamiya should be even better! - but your painting on thos toy soldiers is amazing! O.O
-
awesome stuff! the tanks and buildings are great!
-
Stunning would be the word to describe this!
I was just thinking of doign some Skirmish with Tamiya figures
Excellent stuff
Steve
-
Thanks for the kind words fellas. If you are thinking of doing this with Tamiya, I would actually recommend Dragon WWII figures instead, they are very nice and lots of variety. But the Conte plastics are just too nice for me to switch horses now. The Forces of Valour armour is not too expensive either.
-
Nice one ive seen force of valor a few times now ill keep my eyes open
-
I'll never worry about whether I obsess over my hobby ever again. :-I
-
Very, very good setting!!!!!
1/35 skirmish games is an "old" but actually good idea.
With the trend towards ever-increasing figures why not 1/35?!
On the market there are so many accessories for 1/35 WW2 modelling.
This leaves no wish unfulfilled.
Question: Which rules did you use for your 54mm gaming?
-
You are not wrong, there are as many extras for wargaming this scale as in the smaller, of course they are a bit more expensive, but the figures are actually around the same price as 28mm, and sometimes cheaper. My Conte plastics work out at a pound (GBP) each. Also, scratchbuilding terrain in this scale is easier and allows for more detailed work. As for rules I use a homemade variant of GW's Necromunda system, which works very well. I don't like my rules too complicated, and some large scale skirmish sets I have seen read like a military academy training manual. Simple is best for me.

Have you write down this rules additions to Necromunda? Can you send it to me as PDF, doc or what ever?
Tip: For some special figures look the webpage from the russian manufacturer "Master Box Models":

Great stuff to "pimp" your 54mm-Tabletop :)

Terrific, and Terrifying... :)
did you all ever played airfix dogfighter?
-
I like World in arms for 1/35 skirmishes, it hybridizes Necromunda and Mordeheim.

Just double your ranges.
-
Not sure about the soubriquet, especially as I don't believe in them... This really is an excellent set up, both figures and buildings showing off just how good The One True Scale is for skirmish. Would love to see it in the flesh - will it be appearing at a show?
Mike

Oh, wow! I missed this when it was posted! Beautifully executed.
-
Mike, the gods willing, they will be making their public debut at BLAM 2010. Should give me enough time to knock out some more Germans, and two 30 cal teams, and maybe some US Airborne. Possibly another building or two. Fingers crossed. By the way, does the Skirmish Wargames Group have it's own web site, I can't find one.
-
Jolly good - I'm not familiar with BLAM though - it's where/when?
We don't any more - it got Spammed out of existence! I keep meaning to either start a blog for us or somewhere like Flikr or even a Yahoo group, so that at least we can post photos of games, but never seem to get round to it - too many figures to paint or whatever. We do have a newsletter, email only, editor is Ted Herbert at herbert.e1@sky.com, which has AARs and news of up-coming games.

BLAM is the Lead Adventure Forum's mostly UK members get together nearer the end of the year. Malamute is the main man behind this.
