Title: Marauder Giant finished
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on 01 September 2024, 12:55:13 PM
Heyhey, happy weekend. I painted the Marauder Giant to a degree that I'll call him pretty much finished. He's been standing on the sidelines in a half-finished state for long enough. There he is, being unimpressed with a detachment of would-be giant hunters.

To me it's just one of the most iconic GW figures ever. I bought him ages ago off a friend who got rid of his WHFB figures. Last christmas I gave him a start, but the very next night I put him aside. This year, to save me from tears, I thought I'd get him finished.

There are tons of things to improve and fix and all, but at least he's in a playable state, and that's always the main thing.

Hope you like him!

Well that looks awesome. What a look he's giving whoever he's about to squash! Also I never realized it before having seen the model many times, but it seems plausible that Will Ferrell could play him in the movie!

Brilliant painting on an iconic miniature ! I’ve never liked it! But you’ve done a fantastic job!

@Dags: :D Thanks!

@OSHIROmodels: Oh, thanks very much!

@Frugalmax: Thank you. He does look like a character indeed. I tried to make the face look extra mean, but in the end we all love the guy. ;)

@majorsmith: :D That is a lovely comment. It's rare to meet somebody who's been there when this figure was around and doesn't like it, but it's all fair and rather refreshing. ;) Thanks!

Okay, after two comments I went back and fixed two things on the guy: The green shoulder got a bit of texture, highlights and shading.
(https://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2024_09/shoulderfixS.jpg.65283ddcccd815b0f933ce5872c6f0a0.jpg)

...and the back of the left knee (which is a deep hole in the figure I made a bit less dark looking, after a friendly man on a German forum said that this didn't look healthy.

Sill a deep hole, but I think it's a bit better now. At least I'm happier with the guy now. After all: If you're gonna do it, do it right (right). *dances in a Wham!-ly fashion*. ;)

Awesome classic giant!

A friend of mine had one, and he added a gigantic set of genitalia to the underneath, long enough to be visible on the thigh - it was hilarious 🤣

Another wonderful example of your brushwork :)

I believe for many years, it was law for each edition of the Golden Daemons to have at least one of these big bois as an entry. And yours would certainly not have been out of place there.

It's obviously a labour of love and it shows. Especially the freehand on the different pieces of cloth are excellent :)

I kicked my self for years because I did not pick him up back when he was in the shops.  You really nailed the paint on him!!  Congrats to you.

Oh that's nice. Very nice.
Makes me wish I bought one when it was up for sale recently.

Beautiful result on this very challenging miniature. I never got round to paint my frost giant couple that I own for three decades now. They are still waiting for more than primer. Yours is fantastic and I admire the stamina to have it done!

 REMARKABLE work, I especially lover the beard.

@Patrice: Thanks very much! :)

@dickiegranthum: :D It's one of those figures which tempt such thoughts, I guess.

@Daeothar: Thanks muchly, that's very kind of you to say. About the GD thing - yeah, maybe even then in those good old days the rule of "big model = better model!!!1" applied already. But then there's also something very sympathetic about the guy, isn't it. His silly hair, and the sheer fact that he just looks like a bloke. With the later giants GW did I always found it weird that they were made to look so inhuman and I have no idea why. And most of them weren't beardy either!

@snitcythedog: Cheers! Did you get one now as GW brought him back as made-to-order?

@sir_shvantselot: Thanks very much, Sir!

@tikitang: Thanks!

@beefcake: Thank you. Yeah, these made-to-order things are devious. Some of them are also just stupidly priced, but some things are somewhat okay-ish (if we apply the very individual rules to pricing within the GW niche ). It may be a slippery slope, but after Brexit came into effect and buying miniatures from the UK (where loads of miniatures companies I really like) just got a pain, I think that buying miniatures rather than not buying them is advisable. :D Just to have them in a cupboard somewhere, and it might be the last time we can get our hands on them. I actually bought the set of GW Badlands Ogres a few months ago. No idea what to do with them, but I don't have any ogres anyway, so at some point they'll come in handy.

@Michi: Thanks muchly! Yeah, somehow my thinking was "oh, that's just an oldey-times monster figure. It'll be a breeze.". But in fact it's basically a 1/12th scale human figure (well, from memory).

@Tom Dulski: Oh, thanks! I went back and redid the beard a little towards the end. With a figure that size and weight holding it was a constant factor. So usually I held him between on the bottom of the base and top of the head, which is why I had to do the hair in the very end.

Well, thanks for the nice comments! I hope that he'll see a gaming table some day! ;)

I did not know it was out again!  Thank you for that tidbit!

So true. I have the metal giant that came after this one (with the animal jaw lashed to his own) and even though he's big, he's more of a large ogre than anything else, but at least he's got pretty much human proportions. Not so the Albion giants; very gangly, that lot.

And I recently acquired a mint plastic giant kit for use with my Night Goblins. I first wanted to use the metal one I mentioned above, but he's only a tad taller than the modern plastic trolls I added to the army ::)  At least the plastic guy is properly tall.

The proportions on the plastic one are really way off again though; all thin like the Albion ones. But there is a hint of human gigantism to the parts, so they may have taken a hint or two there.

And I totally agree on the lack of beard; there's 3 or 4 heads in there, but only one has facial hair. And that's just a really long and silly fu-manchu mustache. I plan to remedy that by sculpting a proper long, wavy beard when I build him :D

(Now the giant Otherworld giant I have has the right proportions, and being in metal, he'd be an actual safety hazard on the table I reckon. And I even got a resin bearded head for him here on the LAF as well...)

@snitcythedog: Yeah, I'm afraid it's gone now. You know how GW operate: Announce something, then announce the pre-order, at some point on a Saturday the pre-order phase happens and 20 minutes later everything is sold out. :/ Hope you can get one somehow!

@Daeothar: Oh yes, the one that came after the Marauder one has agreeable proportions as well. Then the Albion ones came along and I was not on board with these. :D There also was the Forgeworld giant who was proper huge, but again, too gangly and hairless. One of my very first commission jobs under the Battle Brush Studios banner was a huge Chaos army, and with that I got to work with the plastic giant as well. Did not love the proportions (even though I never considered the gigantism angle before to be honest. In that regard it makes a bit more sense), and most of all IIRC he only had 4 fingers and 4 toes on eac hand and foot respectively. The other hands had just three fingers, a foot and a hoof maybe? Yup, all the head options in that one were just too monstrous for me as well. Really cool model and proper big too. I had a little look around and actually found a picture of the guy. :D https://www.coolminiornot.com/247426 (https://www.coolminiornot.com/247426) Yup, the Otherworld giant looks cool. :D Kinda like the Marauder's angry dad.

@infelix: Thanks, that's very nice to read. :)

The frustrating thing is I had an original of it which I sold for an unhandsome amount. Oh well, you win some you lose some. I'll probably get it again at some stage.

fantastic.

reminds me that I had (at time of release - I'm that old!) the original 'whopping' Citadel Giant (during the fantasy tribes era I think).
I was (even more) clueless then than now, to the point that I couldn't even begin to assemble it. Long gone.

but, yeah, love this particular iteration of the citadel big fellah, and even more so with the usual fab Sigur paint-job.

@Coenus Scaldingus: Thanks very much! Yeah, this guy got plenty of character, so I had to live up to that. And he's just an iconic dude.

@beefcake: Not unlikely, yeah. I very rarely sold miniatures (hence the biiiiig pile of them I'm sitting on. :D ). On the 2nd edition Blood Angels I regret that, in the case of the 3rd edition Tau I don't really. Well, just a bit.

@Bloggard: You mean this one? http://www.solegends.com/citboxes/thegiant/index.htm (http://www.solegends.com/citboxes/thegiant/index.htm). Which head would you have used, if you'd assembled him? I mean in 1984 or when he was released assembly must have been incredibly daunting.

@axiom: Oh, thanks very much!

ha - aye, that was the one Sigur!

looking at it now, the head used in the b/w photo at the bottom of that page is my favourite.
And yes - birthday present in 1984, or thereabouts, I guess.

That is a very hard head to resist. That nose makes it, and giants somehow very often don't have a very impressive nose to show for.
