Title: Bandit86 WIP Thread
Post by: bandit86 on 28 November 2009, 07:10:22 AM
I have decided to throw my hat in the ring (not that I can compete against the likes of Admiral Benbow) a bit late but I have had this in mind for a while so here it goes.  Continuing on my Quar theme I have chosen to do a Quar Airship.  The body of the ship will be made out of an old plastic pretzel barrel that I held onto because I thought it might be used for something. Some plastic bits and bobs, part of old toys some food containers, Christmas tree ornaments and a bunch of other stuff.

The Airship is more of an ironclad of the air and also inspired by the Albatross from Jules Vern’s “Master of the world”.  It’s about 5 decks high with the bottom housing the Bomb bay area with two doors on either side for cargo and most important so you can see the bomb bay area. The walls are made from and old Disney toy with plastic sheeting for doors, pipes, bombs, and lever, I think most of you will be able to identify the bomb drop tube.  The ceiling (not shown yet) will have some bomb hang above ready to drop.

On one side of the middle deck I have cut out a place to put an outside deck and hall made out of plastic sheets and a Crystal light drink container. Cabin doors were cut out of plastic and there will be a machine gun on the deck.  On the other side are portholes made out of contact lens packages and a small plastic bottle used as a machine gun turret.  (http://i45.tinypic.com/1z18kqx.jpg)
On the top is half of a Christmas tree ornament that will be made into a turret.  The fight deck will be attached to the front of the barrel and then will be covered with a lager half of a Christmas tree ornaments. The back will have the engines and some smaller engines will be on the sides.  It’s coming along but I have no plans just my imagination.

It's just a start but I hope you like it and I hope I finish :)

Looks big. You might want to put it in it's own thread though rather than in the contest discussion.

Whats a Sticky Wirelizard.

This thread is currently "pinned" or "stickied" at the very top of the Build Something Contest forum, along with the main thread for organizing the contest; everyone else's build threads are un-pinned and float around below this level.

Just a glitch on the part of one of our hardworking moderators, I'm assuming! It's a bit odd, is all.

Apologies to all concerned, especially Bandit86.

My attempt to split his project from the thread it began in resulted in a journey around the various corners of the forum for the past 24 hours.  :?

Normal service has now been resumed  lol

Now where did I put my Service revolver......

Tonight I primed the body of the ship and added some rivets using a quick method I read on LAF . I used white glue and dabbed the rivets on, it’s a real trial and error method but worked just fine for what I was looking for.  It was hard to get each one the same size but the more you do the better you get and once the glue dried it seems pretty stable and has just enough depth.  I then added my engine exhaust port (jar lids) the main gun (made from a pen) and some stabilizers with struts (Sheet plastic and bits from my bit box) I added a Quar to the picture so you can get an idea of the size.

Next: landing pads, another fin on the back, more work on the gun, and the machine gun turret on the other side.

Love the interior bits. Some very nice details.
Not sure how its going to all fit together though?
Any chance of a bit more of an explanation or pictures with the bits in place?

Blood: you got to keep it in you. Don't let it out.

Same thing goes for the smoke inside electrical components, never let that smoke out!

Well the contest ends today and I am not quite done but for the most part it’s finished. I still wanted to add some lettering but time is up.
What I learned for the project.

When you enter a contest, enter at the start not at the end, one becomes very rushed when life happens at the same time.

Even though trash to treasure is a good idea, some things just don’t work the way you want them to.

You can measure twice and cut once (works most times) but when working with the thin plastic of the pretzel barrel you find out that once cut it does not hold its true shape. And things just don’t glue on very well.

Read labels and don’t shop when your mind is in a fog that way you do not buy enamel paint when you wanted acrylic. But even though I made that mistake so far I was able to paint the ship (not my best job)

Great ideas don’t always turn out great.

When something is very fragile you tend to drop it over and over.

Slicing open your finger because you are too stupid to listen to yourself when your mind says that’s not a smart way of using a Xacto knife.

All in all it was still a fun little project and I am 80% happy with it. Picture will be taken and put on the LAF web site late tonight. Hope you Quar nuts will approve.
Thanks
Bandit86
I can't seem to send the picture Via E-mail on my work computer so I will bow out but I can post here.
I was able to take a few quick and dirty picture and I think you can get the Idea.  thanks it was fun
