.......which I started back in the '80s! I have resolved to paint my way through my backlog of half-finished armies. I usually buy all of the troops that I need for an army either all at once or over a short period of time. I have been carting around thousands of 25/28mm ancients since the late '70s-early '80s. These figures will find few customers at flea-markets or Ebay so I might as well get around to painting them myself. First on the list are my Ancient Indians. I have been faffing about avoiding painting my chariots for half a century it seems about time!

Next up are some slingers and elephants to be followed by the Command chariots, wish me luck!

I bought a couple of incomplete 4 horse chariots, and on one the fourth horse wasn't Hinchcliffe. Anyway, there were no yolks for them and I had to fashion them from wire. It works. I love the chariots though.
-
Lovely work.
I have always had a soft spot for Hinchcliffe (& Garrison) as they provided most of my early armies,
that was when my pocket money started to stretch towards metal, & away from Airfix Plastic.
At the moment I am picking up figures from eBay for some Hinchcliffe DBA armies. First on my
wants list is New Kingdom Egyptian.
Good luck with your Indians.

Someone egged you on to finish them, right?

Well, at least he got cracking on them. :D
He had to though, as they weren't all 'white' to start with. ;D
Am I over egging this? lol

I do exactly the same. Not sure the method is always good for the mental health! ;)
Your Indians look great Anton and very colourful.
-
I finished them around 8 weeks ago. The worst thing, besides the yolks, were the fragile axles. Two broke on one model.
My classical Indians are MiniFigs, the 2 & 4 horse chariots, Hinchcliffe
-
has.been I think that I have a pack or two of Pharaoh's chariot if you would like it. I don't have any other Egyptians so I really don't have any use for it

A quotation from Schiller comes to mind.

That is very kind.
Where abouts are you?
I am in the UK.
If not other sides of the Pond we could swap some Hinchcliffe figures. I have Pikemen & other figures.
-
has.been, I'm in the States but I would be happy to send them to you on the promise that you will donate the shipping costs to your local Veterans Asssociation. I will never get around to gathering and painting an Egyptian army so they are surplus to me and I have simply thousands of other minis in need of paint so a trade would simply add to the Lead Mountain. If you are interested contact by PM or by email at daftrica 89 at yahoo dot com with "Chariots" in the title
After digging through my Mountain of Shame I find that I have three Pharaoh's chariots and four more chariots without horses of crew. You are welcome to the lot.

The minis are on their way, USPS says that it will take two weeks. Take that for what you may, probably closer to three.
-
Many thanks for your kindness. I shall pass the good deed on.
-
and don't they look fab.
makes me think of 'battle for wargamers' covers.

I keep plugging away at the pile, now we see a dozen heavy cavalry
Battle for Wargamers! Now you are dating all of us! These were almost new when that was current, I still have a few copies in my library
-
yes indeed, although having a nostalgic search on it (the magazine) had me reading one blog-post that came as a bit of shock.
not the place for further discussion in this thread tho'.
I 'll try and remember the good about it - like the few covers featuring lovely hinchliffe (and other) figures of the era...
and I love those heavy cav. (def. look like hinchliffe from the horses?).
I know it's the usual 'old age' stuff kicking in, but I'm increasingly drawn to the 'impressionistic' look of the castings from back then, with sympathetic paint-jobs, such as yours.
Think I'd go with gloss varnish!

Another batch of Indian Heavy Cavalry, nothing special except that it takes another four packs of minis off of the pile.

I needed to add some slingers to my force to complete the list but Hinchliffe never made any (as far as I can tell) so I was forced to convert some redundant two-handed swordsmen to slingers. Not the most artful work, but it kept the force solidly Hinchliffe and filled the gap. Creative, well done.
It does remind me of Bob O'Brien's series in Airfix Magazine, 'Romans. Friends & Foes'
It was inspiration to a young me. Nearly all of my first Wargaming armies were from
Airfix. Most from the Robin Hood set, which provided my slingers. The archer reaching
back for his arrow. I once made a Pike phalanx 60 figures strong (the largest you could
make a unit in those days) Top half of Napoleonic French Cuirassier on the bottom half
of a Napoleonic Highlander. Drawing pin pushed in for a shield & piano wire pikes. :)
-
has.been, I remember those articles, I kept stabbing myself with the pins and gave up and started painting just Romans and Brits, much safer (if cowardly)
-

Not cowardly, but sensible. I was...reckless. To create a unit of Thracians, again using Robin Hood figures, I made Rhomphia by
bending pins into a question mark shape, then hammering the blade section flat. Any sensible person would realise that they would
be (literally) lethal weapons. I cut my fingers so many times I was able to write under the bases in my blood. :o
In my defense I was unsupervised. ;) :D ;D
-
has.been,
Memories of childhoods spent without excessive adult supervision! I once grew tired of having to re-arm my Macedonian
pikemen after every game, so I spent a week cutting piano-wire pikes and sharpening them to "encourage " players to respect my troops, Of course two weeks later I provided an example by leaning onto them and acquiring twenty-four neatly spaced holes in my palm, much to the amusement of my buddies, good time indeed!
-
ouch! :o

The very last unit of Indian Horse, all that remains are four heavy chariots. More pictures here https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2024/10/closing-in-on-end-last-of-hinchliffe.html (https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2024/10/closing-in-on-end-last-of-hinchliffe.html)

It would be nice to see, when the Chariots are done, an Army picture.
