Title: Eureka 15 mm World War Two figures - compatible ranges + OHW rules(?)
Post by: FifteensAway on September 18, 2024, 02:49:59 AM
I need this like I need four extra holes in my head but I've also been considering it for a Very Long Time and that is adding some World War Two figures to my collection - but keeping the numbers Very Small and in 15 mm.  I'm looking at the Eureka 15 mm range: US Marines, Pacific Australians, and Japanese.  Love that I can buy all the figures for each of those three without duplicating poses.  Almost certainly be a skirmish level sort of game.  (Adds up to around 150/160 figures - that is very few for me, more like 40 or 50 versus 40 or 50 since unlikely to field Marines and Aussies in same game, not impossible though).

So, first question: what ranges would be compatible with Eureka figures mentioned above - especially vehicles (besides the ones they offer of course) but figures as well.  Especially great if figures are in unique or in small packs.

Second question: One Hour Wargames Rules (not really skirmish, I know) but like to hear from those who use the rules for WWII.

Third question: alternative and Very Simple rules for WWII Pacific Theater skirmish levels.  And when I say simple, I really mean simple.  Love to read about it but I AM NOT AND WILL NOT BE a weapons nerd (though thankful they are out there to give us the data to create accurate stuff).  I just want to have a fun game that looks like WWII but don't want to have to pore over charts to decide if I nicked the rear left corner of a tank or winged that sword waving Japanese officer at the back of his right elbow.  :o. And, yes, I want tanks and other vehicles in my games - even at the skirmish level.  I don't want granularity, just quick and fun to play.

Thanks!

Well, depending what you mean by skirmish ( 1-1 fighting and figure removal or just platoon level combat) I will throw Two Fat Lardies Chain of Command Far East into the mix together with PSC's Battlegroup Pacific. The former is basically platoon vs platoon with heavy weapon support including the off tank. The downside is that at the moment they don't cover the US Army/USMC being basically Japanese and "Commonwealth". Battlegroup Pacific can be played at single or multi platoon level with artillery, armour and other support weapons. In truth it isn't a skirmish game but can be played with a low figure count. The problem with both is that you need to buy the core rules and then a "theatre of war" add -on so it get s pricey.

I think the Eureka figures are quite big.  Unfortunately from what I know there aren't many Far East ranges out there in 15mm  I know of Peter Pig who produces a pretty comprehensive range Japanese, US and Commonwealth. I bought Skytrex' "Command Decision" Japanese and USMC.  Smaller than Eureka but IMHO very nice models.

Played the OHW WW2 rules as written, least favourite set in the book.  The good news is some clever folks have agin modified them but there are naturally more detailed.  Your call and have fun, try them they may work for you!  PS I really enjoy all the other sets with very minor added addiitinal details.

A really fun, simple WW2 skirmish game is Five Men in Normandy/at Kursk. VERY SMALL numbers (like, five guys a side – take a guess where the name comes from :D), simple, and lots of fun. More geared for "cinematic" play, not obsessed with accuracy and what have you. Kursk is a bit more polished and complicated, but still on the simplw side.

Also, in Kursk you can use vehicles while in Normandy they're just there as transports really. There's an old supplement for Normandy with more "fleshed out"? vehicle rules, buried somewhere in Wargames Vault – I could send you the file if you like (it's free). But, the author is also in the process of updating Five Men in Normandy, so these rules might appear on the updated rulebook, I don't know.

In any case, very fun set of rules :)
