Title: Adtigo Planitia Lunae
Post by: Mad Lord Snapcase on October 11, 2024, 02:44:31 PM
Oldgamer, Wingnut and Daeothar must take the blame for my postal delivery today:

Work starts tomorrow on my Lunar board.

More to come (probably including a diminishing bank balance!).....

Oldgamer and Daeothar must take the blame for my postal delivery today:..

This is a classic example of blame-transference (if such a thing exists). I know His Lordship and I can state unequivocally that he never, ever needed any external influence to persuade him to spend yet more of his incalculable wealth on "oooh shiny".

Annoyingly, he’ll do a great job on it :D

Just to add fuel to the fire - Amera plastic mouldings do a range of 28mm blast and moon craters in their future range as well as a lunarscape board in landscapes and some really useful looking rock outcrops.

Thanks all, for your comments. In the space race, I'm more likely to be the tortoise, rather than the hare! I found a video on YouTube which is going to provide the method for my board. Grouting powder and lava rocks on order.

Many thanks, Rick. I have ordered some of those Amera craters.

Does anybody have suggestions for painting the helmet visors? Maybe gloss black, not sure...

They should be gold, obviously. At least for the Americans. The others are up for debate, but you can't go wrong with black I reckon.

And thanks for the link; I was thinking grout as well...

Thanks. Yes, I think gold for the Americans as you say and black for my Russians. Should make a nice contrast.

All assembled and primed now.

...and then, my craters from Amera arrived. There's probably too many for the 2' x 2' board, but there may be a second board in the future for a bit of variety.

Alright!  8)

When you move, you move like the 3rd stage of a Saturn V, don't you?  ;)

I'll be going for a modular approach myself, with a flat board and templated/based features, for flexibility, but those craters are going to look fab!

I am a bit concerned about the miniatures standing on my planned surface and it makes possible future structures tricky, but I'll give it a shot. The flat modular board is much more flexible.

First completed Soviet Cosmonaut done to test the colour scheme. Not absolutely delighted, but it will work for the game, I think. Decals to be added later.

The figure second from the left in the back, the one walking with the gun. Did you have to do any cleanup on him? The reason I ask is that my version is showing quite a bit of mould slippage, with a glaring crack on the front of his visor. His back left heel isn't aligned either and there's a huge seam down his backpack. The pointing arm on the back left figure has similar issues.

Should I be looking for a replacement, or have others had issues. Those are the only two problems, but I don't know if it's common, or if I just got "lucky" :(

The six figures with the starter set all needed some flash removing and there were some nasty lines, but nothing as bad as you describe. There were no issues with the back packs or visors, all clean. The four figures with the other set were resin cast and had no problems at all.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'll drop them a line and see what they say. For reference

which seems more than I should be expected to fix. The visor, especially, would be really tricky.

Cheers, Mike. One of the things that attracted me to this was, it's just make a 2' x 2' board and paint ten minis. Then you can play. However, no doubt, it's going to get bigger!

Craters and a hill glued down. Plaster and lava rocks next.

Thanks to all for your very kind comments.

I have picked up some sci-fi looking crates from Crooked Dice.

First decent weather for quite a while, so I sprayed the board black and then grey from one direction only.

Then I've put a water/glue mix on the board and added a layer of grouting powder.

When that's dry, I'm going to spray the surface with another water/glue mix which will hopefully keep the top layer of powder in place, fingers crossed!

Fantastic looking terrain; spraying the base from one direction really makes it look like the moon with shadows. I used to have a large collection of lunar photos that NASA made, and it literally reminds me that! (They were donated to a museum archive)

I think I'd have been happy stopping after the black and white spray :D

I had worried that some of the Amera craters were too tall, but they've bedded in very nicely. Looking forward to seeing this completed.

edited to fix spelling mistake ::)

Thanks, Mike.

It's not just a Snapcase who made it to the moon. Elon Snapcase, the CEO of the multi-national conglomerate corporation SNAPCORP ©, has opened a new space division in his company and built a launch pad and facilities at a secret base, somewhere in peaceful and secluded Devon. The year is 1979 and whilst it is no secret that NASA astronauts and Soviet Cosmonauts are on the moon, Elon Snapcase intends to secretly land the first British astronauts from SNAPCORP © in Mare Vaporum near the Manilius Crater. If there's money in the moon, Elon Snapcase wants some of it (or more aptly, all of it).

In a fit of enthusiasm, I started planning a second 2' x 2' board to include Zvezda Base. This will be the centrepiece.

Hopefully, the first board is finished. Just waiting for it to dry properly, still a few wet patches. Maybe some small bits to touch up.

Whereas, I am now wishing I went the neoprene mat way! Less work!   ;)

I'm aiming just a little beyond neoprene, but still pretty light work and easy to transport that I've used for DBA — carpet spray painted with stone texture paint, starting with a medium grey carpet, and spraying black from one direction at a low angle and then very light grey from the opposite side.  Then I can spray craters and rock tumbles the same way.

Had considered neoprene, but wanted 3D lunology.

Cat, I bought it printed from here: JAWAR3D (https://www.jawar3d.co.uk/)

I think they design their own products, so not sure if STLs are available. However, it does say they can print to any scale.

It's hard finding options that don't look too darkity-dark or star-warsy.  I wish Black Site offered mix and match habitat parts, more than jsut their small greeblies.

The SNAPCORP © lunarnauts are assembled and primed. Struggling to choose the colour scheme though. I don't want blue and white, as too close to the NASA colour scheme. So far, I have considered orange and white, yellow and white, blue and red, blue and orange and blue and yellow. I'm thinking I may want to save yellow and white, in case I buy the Chinese taikonauts.

Sorry I missed the build up to the launch of Elon Snapcase and the supera galactic Snapcorps venture into outer space.

The roar of the mighty rockets propelling Snappers 1 seem quiet of late, is the project complete or abandon in some dark corner of Snapcase Hall, even now awaiting a dash of re-vitalising juice.

This was an educational thread in someways. I always believed the moon was made of Wensleydale cheese, my source for this is of course Wikipedia and the well known astronomers Wallace and Gromit I did not realize realise it was made of tiling grout.
You live and learn..........sometimes.

The fame and wisdom of those two widely known experts made me try that sort of cheese first on a holiday trip to Albion many (Wensleydale-)moons ago. It was completely unknowm to me before. I wished, I had crackers with it...

Mitchi I'm from Yorkshire, which probably makes you an honourary Yorkshireman as we appear to be twins seperated at birth but Wensleydale wouldn't be my favourite cheese even if it's from Yorkshire, or Gods own country as it's more usually known.
You should try Stilton, made where I currently live in Derbyshire, if the moon was made of Stilton, Snapcorp would be mining it as we speak and Elon Snapcase would be richer than he currently is.  ;)

I'm pretty sure I did, but can't remember the particular taste in comparison.  o_o

Vaggers - I’m glad to see that you recognize recognise the superiority of Stilton which is indeed a cheese non pareil.

Seen it a few years ago. It's pretty atmospheric, but the ending is of the typical 'Asian weird' kind that my Western mind can't easily grasp...  :D

Wow!
I drop 1 decent YELP review about the Moon and now everybody is up here?
Well then welcome to Luna Firma Lord Snap Case. I'm sorry I have been absent from your thread, after I contributed to your impulse spending, your work is amazing. The Commonwealth figure conversion is fantastic and I hope other gamers follow your idea to create other nations lunar programs. I'm trying to convince a friend to paint up the Liechtenstein Aeronautics Space Team (L.A.S.T.)   Have you played yet? Oldgamer pulled me over to the BSS discord and there has been a lot of discussion on LUNAR hobby craft and posting over in that community.

Remember that the old game company FASA — name stood for Freedonia Air & Space Administration.  To War!

Didn't know that!
"Duck Soup", recently rewatched that classic and "Go West". Ah the Marx Brothers, Groucho, Harpo, Zeppo, and Karl comedy genius.
I was aware that Ral Partha was the name of one of the founder's D&D characters.
