Title: Hardboiled Cthulhu!
Post by: brotherAkkyshan on 01 December 2009, 03:07:16 PM
Just picked up this little curiousity in my local Waterstones. It's edited by a James Ambuehl and contains twenty-one "Two-Fisted Tales of Tentacled Terror"! Yet to start reading it but I'm hoping it contains some 'gems' of inspiration.  :D

Anyone read it?

yea....  That's the Dimensions Books edition, right?
Real hit and miss for me (emphasis on the miss part).  Ok book at best.  I was hoping for...I dunno...something a little more polished, I guess.

Very unfortunately, I found most of those stories lame.  Couple of decent yarns in the lot.  Hope your enjoyment is superior to mine.

I'll check it out.  The only other 'non-Lovecraft' Cthulhu mythos stuff I read was Brian Lumley...and I didn't really care for that all that much.

Anyone got any other suggestions?

August Derleth did the a bunch of Cthulhu stuff, including a series set in the Dreamlands.

Again, I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend the -excellent- film "Cast a Deadly Spell" starring Fred War, by HBO productions. It's a hard boiled mystery set in a universe where magic is real, and has strong elements of Lovecraftian mythos...:)

The remake with Dennis Hopper... which was oddly timed since the Fred Ward film wasn't that old to begin with at the time... isn't so good.
