Title: 1520's pre Pavia Papal Troops

Assembling an infantry bodyguard for a dodgy cardinal for my Ruckus campaign series- The Von Trinkenessen Chronicles.
Was there a uniform or a specific palette of colours or was it just like the Landskneckts of this period - you provided your clothes and any colour goes?
 Any help greatly received.

I'm afraid I can't answer your question. But I'm just checking that you've seen the TAG Maximilian Guards, which may be wearing the sort of clothing you're interested in.

There was no real system of "uniforms" in the modern sense. Clothing in distinctive colours could be issued or a unit remarked upon as being outfit in common colours ( Romandiole pikes in red and white).

If issued by a lord / significant person, they would reflect the personal colours of that person (Caesare Borgia seems to have done this).

So your options are decide on the personal colours (normally two) and paint them either identical (issue of clothing) or use them as the limited palette, example red surcoat, white hat and hose or visa versa, all red, all white and they will hang together as a unit.
