Title: Anyone in Colorado playing Lunar?
Post by: Cessna on November 13, 2024, 07:54:24 PM
I don't check this board for a while, and while I'm gone it looks like people have found Lunar. I got some stuff for it myself a while back:

It's not complete, I still need to texture the bases and paint that lander. I'll also probably build a terrain board or two at some point. Yes, I used "Rolo" candy wrappers on the moon buggy. I also had to convert an astronaut to have a new weapon - a golf club - Alan Shepherd style:

Oh, also, has anyone ever heard of Apollo 47 Technical Handbook?

It's a VERY bizarre role playing game. It's very rules light. In brief, one player plays the Astronaut...

"Capcom, I'm having a problem with my C-one eleven thirty three unit."

And the other people at the table play the Voices on the Radio...

"Have you tried resetting it? Is the orange light on?"

And that's about it. You're recreating the back and forth communications of the NASA missions, but with no constraints, so it often becomes funny. There's also always a bit of unspoken uncomfortable subtext set in the game, for example, "The Astronaut cheats at golf and everyone knows it," just to set the mood.

What really makes it is the book. You have to order it online. It comes with about 4-5 pages of rules and, more importantly, over a thousand pages of Apollo Technical Manuals to give you dilemmas to mess with in play:

We played this over Zoom, with appropriate sound effects like Quindar beeps ("Have you tried torquing it with the MX-7167? (beep)") and it was a lot of fun. If you like Lunar give it a look.

If anyone wants to get a game of Lunar in here in CO, let me know.

Ooh, nice size collection there, and great golf club!

I've already done green putty mod to make a Shepherd 6-Iron for a NASA command figure that's about to hit the painting queue.

"Ivan don't golf."

There's a congresswoman in the east of the state whose been on the lunatic fringe for years. She's recently divorced and probably has quite a bit of time on her hands. By all accounts she's great company if you are into musical theatre, so there's another plus.

She may or may not appreciate you utilsiing 'Jewish Space Lasers', the favoured weapon of her great nemesis, in your game .  ;)

That's a pretty huge collection, as far as Lunar goes!  8)

I also love that golf club; an idea I might nick (as well).

And thanks for mentioning that Apollo RPG game. I'm not going to play that, but I will be checking out that book full of technical manuals and details  :D

Fun bits of golfing history I've come across in my rabbit-holing:

Hit the ball "for miles and miles", well or 40 yards, whichever comes first.  Turns out it ain't easy to airmail a ball on the moon after all:

You can get the pdf on Drivethrurpg pretty cheap, I think it's $10.

I had to get the thousand page paper copy because it's hysterical.

This is their older resin model, bought about a year ago. I don't think they make it in resin anymore.
