Here is the first hero base for my Silmarillion Elf army for the brilliant and just-released 'Midgard' rules. The army will represent the warhost of Caranthir the Dark, son of Feanor.
As it's a Feanorian army I have avoided my usual Elf colour scheme of blues, silvers and purples and have gone with a rich red scheme as befitting a son of Feanor. The two core colours are Foundry Madder Red (surcoats) and Foundry Brick Red (shields, cloaks). The yellows are Foundry Ochre.
The models here are Copplestone 1990s Elf sculpts, originally Grenadier Miniatures, but purchased from Forlorn Hope and Battlezone here in the Uk a few years back (and still available!)
The shield design was done on Pages on my MacBook using a star symbol, converted to JPEG, transferred to Word and resized. It was printed on plain white paper at 5mm width, cut out (VERY carefully!) and glued on. It's not 100% correct as a symbol and as Caranthir is son of Feanor, and not a king in his own right should be oriented as a square not a diamond. But diamonds look better, so diamond it is!
Banner hand painted and features the star of Feanor plus Laurelin the Golden Tree of the Valar.

Beautiful work! The palette is striking and I love the details like the freehand knot work along the edge of the hero’s tunic and where the banner wraps around the pole. That’s going to be an amazing looking army!
-
A cracking start on your army, I particularly like the freehand paint work on the edges of the robes.
-
Lovely :)
-
Looks great! Can’t wait to see more!
-
Lovely! They are still a great looking range of minis.
-
Very nice - looking forward to seeing more

Here is the first unit base: Archers. Once again, ex-Grenadier 1990s High Elf sculpts. Old-school, but rather lovely in a quaint and nostalgic way! Spearmen on their way in the next day or two.

Wow, I'm really into those sculpts. Basing and painting is top notch. Such a good palette.

Thank you! :)
Yes, I’ve deliberately gone for subdued colours on tunics and trousers with the browns of the boots and gloves in order to really make the red pop and it seems to work. Adding the ochre coloured hem to the surcoats is subtle but lifts them a little from if they’d just been purely red I think. Overall I think the palette works very well! A bit different to all the blue and green schemes out there for Elves too.
-
Great looking unit of elves. Nice work on the figures as well as the bases.
-
I just loved those Grenadier High Elves when they came out (Copplestone!), and seeing them now excellently painted in this thread makes me happy. Keep on!
It’s a pity the range is so small, though.
-
Looking good. I love those figures - especially the cavalry, but they cost so much to get them sent here to Australia.
-
I really like the way you painted those oldies, good luck for the next ones !

They turned out very nicely indeed. A great colour scheme. I have a small number of them painted in the traditional blue/silver but yours are so different and look so good.

Finally got the first unit of spearmen completed. Like the archers these are ex-Grenadier Miniatures models and I love the monopose effect, even with the dodgy 'legs apart' pose. The shields came out really well considering the design is just small squares of printed computer paper glued onto the shield!
The colour scheme looks good when you get a couple of units together, I think!
Next up, swordsmen from Medbury Miniatures - the only models I've ever seen that replicate the mail armour and surcoat design of these old Grenadier ones! Might be a while though, as I've got some Romans to highlight and base first - bear with me! This army is going to grow!

They look great :- Excellent paint job and basing
-
Yes, those look great to me! The shields turned out quite well, I wouldn’t have guessed that the sigils are printed paper. That seems like a good way to do repeated designs. Way simpler than trying to free-hand them.
-
The spear men look great. Never would have known the shields were paper.
-
Like the archers these are ex-Grenadier Miniatures models and I love the monopose effect, even with the dodgy 'legs apart' pose.
You can get a pretty similar effect with the Oathmark plastic Elves.
-
Nice. The shields look great as others have already mentioned - I wouldn't have thought they were glued on images.
-
Beautiful work on these: the basing is really eye-catching, and the decorative hems work wonders on the figures.
