Title: FFoL BB: 6mm Clone Wars (Fistful of Lightsabers?)
Post by: Maniac on 28 November 2024, 03:32:37 AM
After a number of years looking at the minis as possible Battletech infantry, I've taken the plunge and started printing and painting 6mm Clone Wars figures and vehicles from a number of sources.

I'm planning to use Fistful of Lead:  Bigger Battles, with each base being a squad of troopers.  Then use a dice to track wounds/shots.  B1 Battledroids as D8, with 10-12 models per base.  Clones/B2s with 8-10 models per base, and so forth.  Heroes and commanders on pennies, with vehicles based as needed.

I haven't used vehicles yet in FFoL:BB, and am curious on folks experience with them.  What went well, what should I be aware of?  I'll have Hailfire droids, Droid tanks, AT-TEs, Sabre tanks, and both LAATs and Sep Droid Gunships that I will want to put on the table.

I do have STAPs and Speeders comming, but those are easily handled by mounted troops with flight.

Any thoughts on vehicles?  Ideally I'll be able to field a 4-6 player game with quite a few vehicles thrown in:
Seperatists:  ~13 squads of B1s, 7 squads of B2, 4 squads of Destroyers, 4 squads of Dwarf Spider, 2-3 squads of STAPs, 5 Droid tanks, 4 Hailfire, 3 Gunship, Dooku, Maul, Grevious, and several Droid Commanders
Republic:  ~14 squads of Clones, 5 squads of ARC troopers, 4 squads of AT-RTs, 3 squads of BARC Speeder, 4-5 TX-130 Sabre tanks, 3 AT-TEs, 3 LAATs, 3 ARC trooper heroes, Anakin, Obi-wan, Rex, and Cody.

That should give me a pretty good start.

Looks great!

My mate did 3d printed Star Wars in 10mm, which gave great looking units and vehicles. I think he used Mantic’s Warpath as the basis for the game. But we had to do quite a bit of fiddling of stats to get units that felt right. Unfortunately I’ve got no idea how vehicles work in FFoL BB

Those look great!

I’m leaning heavily towards getting a 3D printer over the Black Friday / Cyber Monday - just sort of waiting for the best deal to present itself.

Pretty much resigned to the fact that I’m going to have to get one to do projects like this…

Thanks guys.  Got most of the commanders done plus some B2:

No General Grievous - surely the definition of a Fistful of Lightsabres?

Grevious is on his wheel bike in the lower left.  The mini of him solo is way out of scale, more like a 12mm or 15mm figure

What an awesome project!!!!

I love the Clone Wars and doing them in 6mm just feels the correct way to re-live the amazing show.
While I have played FFoL a few times, I have not enough experience to know by heart how to construct the units to get that very, very specific Clone Wars feel.

Iirc both in the mediocre movies and the brilliant show the droids come in masses. So many B1s to few B2s to a single Clone trooper show be your guidance. Don’t take it too seriously, just put as many models on a base to make it look right!

But now the crucial part: jedi!

You already based them as singles and they look great! What about the masses of other troops?

Maybe two (actually three in a monty pyrhonesque Spanish Inquisition way) options : go for a bigger base OR make the base chock full of models OR combine both:

1. „normal“ base with 1 hero (jedi or else)
2. slightly bigger base with a few Clones
3. big base with a modest number of B2 or chock full of B1s.

Vehicles: treat them as singles. They are the Jedi equivalent of the baddies.

Well, I'll have to figure out vehicles soon I guess:

The AT-PTs are bit big I think.  Still, treating them as Mounted Troops with heavy blasters should work fine.  Flying, Mounted, Heavy Blasters for the STAPs, and Flying/Mounted/Blasters for the BARCs.

I have played Galactic Heroes with FFoL multiple times and BB in 32mm, so stating up the troop units is easy.

3 Persuader tanks and 5 AATs (including one command tank painted similar to my larger scale one).

I'd forgotten how simple yet pleasing 6mm can be for vehicles.

Work continues apace, the end is in sight so to speak.  I still need to finish up my ARC troopers, 4 AT-RTs, STAPs, and Droidekas, but the bulk is there.  I may add some more TX-130s to balance out the tanks.

Great additions.

More tanks is always a good option, especially when they are 3d printed!

Your armies look great! I do it in 10mm 3D Printed. Previously I did it using 18-19mm Micromachines and Risk Clone Wars B1 droids with metal diecast vehicles. I used Fubar Big Battles. I created the stats and another gent made some great looking unit cards for it. I uploaded everything to the Fubar
https://thegamesshed.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/fubar-one-page-sfmodern-rules/

I love Wiley Games!!!! I also am a huge fan of bigger Battles. My last Clone Wars game I ran was using it. I had made some changes so units of vehicles could work. A few other tweaks too. I forget what they were but will check to see if I wrote it down.

Thanks.

John

Very cool!
I have a ton of 10mm SW minis and look forward to collecting the vehicles and flyers

Great to these painted up. I have a ton of Wakes Emporium 6mm I plan doing in 10mm.
I, of course, have done a lot of Star Wars FfoL BB in 28mm. Most squads are 6 in number. You’re right to treat bike squads as mounted vs separate vehicles.
Don’t worry about vehicles too much. Most AT-ST in our games rarely survive 2 turns. They die quick when fired on by the right weapons. You can also just make squads of vehicles that activate on the same card. If you do this, I suggest upping the number of infantry stands in a unit.

Cheers for the insight.  I have been trying to decide on squad size.

Clones:
Regulars
Size: 6 or 10
Shoot: 10
CC:  10
Traits: Dead-eye, Loyal
Weapons: 1x Missile Launcher, rest Blasters

ARC Troopers:
Regulars
Size:  6 or 10
Shoot: 12
CC: 12
Traits: Sniper, Ranger, Veteran
Weapons: 1x ML, rest Blasters

BARC speeders:
Irregulars:
Size: 4-6
Shoot: 10
CC: 10
Traits: Flight, Mounted, Dead-eye, Skirmishers
Weapons:  Blasters

AT-RTs:
Irregulars:
Size: 4-6
Shoot: 10
CC: 10
Traits: Mounted, Dead-eye, Large
Weapons:  Heavy Blasters

B1s:
Size: 8 or 12
Shoot 8
CC: 8
Traits: Killer, Nerves of Steel (too stupid to seek self preservation)
Weapons:  1x ML, rest Blasters

B2s
Size:6 or 10
Shoot: 10
CC: 10
Traits: Killer, Cool Headed
Weapons: 1x Grenade Launcher, rest Blasters

Droideka:
Irregular
Size: 4-6
Shoot: 10
CC: 10
Traits:  Two-guns, Armored, Quick
Weapons:  2x Blaster per model

Dwarf Spider Droids:
Regular
Size: 4-6
Shoot:  12
CC: 8
Traits:  Eagle Eye, Ranged Fighter
Weapons:  Blasters

Most of the Transports will end up with the capacity to haul 2 squads and a hero or a commander to match their capacity in SW.

Seems about tight. Time for a playtest to dial in the numbers.
Biggest note for new players, just like real battlefields, don’t get caught in the open. You’ll get real world results.

Yeah, we've run it several times with my Samurai and Northern Crusades.  This will be the first time with vehicles.

Crossbows and arquebus are awesome, so we'll see how well ancient religions do vs blasters.
