Title: 55 Days at Quarroom Station
Post by: mikos khan on December 11, 2024, 02:42:18 AM
Last Friday at the local game hangout we put on our latest Victorian Sci Fi opus based on the classic 55 Days at Peking named appropriately enough 55 Days at Quarroom Station.  This took place on in an alien jungle on Venus where an earth outpost (legation?) came under attack by the malicious Quar (sorry Leadfool).  The forces involved were about 160 rifle armed Quar of various quality, a couple of light tanks, and a few artillery pieces.  Arrayed against them were about 70 high quality human infantry of various nationalities fighting from defensive positions and a couple of heavy weapons (a Japanese walker and a US gatling gun).  The goal of the humans was to hold out until a rescue force of about 60 human infantry with some armored support was able to relieve them (the relief force entered from the opposite side of the board on Turn 4).  Because there were two human forces the Quar commander (Leadfool) was obliged to split his force into an ambush force to deal with the relief column and one to attempt to storm the outpost.  Unfortunately,  the defenses of the legation proved too strong for the Quar forces arrayed against them and they were repulsed with heavy casualties (even though the Quar casualties were recycled into new units).  After the relief force made it's appearance it was pretty obvious how the game was going to turn out but the Quar did make a good fight of it.  Coming soon - The Rematch!

That looks great, I don’t think I have ever seen that many painted Quar in a game before! That whole game seems like it was a lot of fun.

It was the first time that I could field all my Quar.  Facing the VSF forces of several members of our gaming group.  The defensive line was just too strong to break, even with some light artillery and two light tanks.

we used the men who would be Warlord rules, a local version of Osprey's "The men who would be king".  The rules are designed for the interwar period, with light mg, anti-tank rifles, rifle grenades etc.  We made them VSF by using the same states as any weapon but giving it a VSF name or look.  So Rifle grenades become a Radium rifle, or an anti-tank rifle is a tesla beam projector. and a light machine gun is a light Maxim.  Squads are usually 12 figures; platoons have a command unit.  Units can be upgraded to sharpshooters, veteran, elite etc.  And can have weapon upgrades.  Optional rules that the humans used extensively and the QUAR used sparingly.

The game was a blast even if my Quar lost horribly.  The humans gave no Quarter.  My forces will be better trained next time.

The commander was punished by the Quarmaisar.  He was drawn and quartered.

The reduction in troops made supply easier so the Quartermaster had an easy time feeding the remains of the force.

Fellow LAF member, Rabbitz painted many of the Quar that are Green.  They hid very well in the terrain.  Several times I lost track of a few figures or an entire squad.

I love the look of the game and it sounds great fun. Who made the Japanese on the board?

Beautiful looking game.  Great to see so many Quar backed up by so many tanks and contraptions.

Oh dear, so many Quar! What will my muzzleloader lizard and parrot men do? Oh, yes. Great powers intervention.  ;)

First, let me thank you for the ruleset clarification. It felt like I might have a clue, but I was only rules adjacent.

Second, as for forces 'lost in the terrain,' I HATE when that happens. A squad or two taking a breather is one thing, but an entire battle squadron in an astroid cluster? *seeth* >:(

Really, looks like the lovely kind of time where even losing horribly is a blessing. To friends not present...

Attached is our version of the rules.  The men who would be Warlord.  Based upon the men who would be warlord.  A work in progress, it still needs some editing.  Not ready  for prime time.  Maybe Osprey wants to use it?????

The tan uniformed Japanese infantry (not mine) were from the Boxer Rebellion line that Old Glory makes.  The walker is an old Champions figure that I armed with a gatling gun and a katana from a Reaper weapons set.  Then as a finishing touch I put a sashimono on its back.

Hey Mikos Khan

Is the Japanese walker supposed to be an automaton, (Babbage engine) or an exoskeleton of a human?

I would say an automaton.  It's arms and legs are too skinny to be an exoskeleton!  Also it's kind of small so we should probably give it fewer hit points than an armored car.  Just a thought.

Look to "A Bridge Too Quar" for the next battle in this series.
