Title: 15mm Seminole Chickee Huts, UPDATE: HOW TO
Post by: Smokeyrone on 08 January 2025, 12:33:53 AM
First one, I built from the poles and frame up.  Figetdy and slow.

Second one, on right, I began by making a card stock roof shape, added fur, reinforced it, THEN added the poles and beams.    Sooo much quicker!  And easier!

The saw palmetto are cabbage palm tops I based on a tiny (3/4") circle of formica.   I Can just set a bunch anywhere, much easier than making a large, multi based piece with all the grass, dead leaves, terrain, etc.  Now I can just make the terrain boards with high grass and pine forest ground, and toss em all over!

I'll get some of my buildings posted tonight.  Really neat to go small with 15mm occasionally!

These look great. If you make another of those huts, maybe take pictures at each stage and post a step-by-step "How to"? I do frontier America gaming with my Song of Drums and Tomahawks rules, but haven't ventured down into Seminole country for my gaming, yet...  :-*

Nice work.

And if you are looking for circular bases - albeit a bit pricier - check out Total Element.  The metal discs take paint well - I use rattle can paint to prime always (I do both sides) - and give some weight to the base.  I've based some 15 mm figures on 1/2" bases and it works fine though I prefer the 3/4" bases, gives a bit more room to work on the base.

Really great structures for the table top. I like the slightly messy thatch; probably more realistic than super-tidy thatch (don't google that.... ::))

Top tip!

Ok, THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE A CHIKEE HUT!

Once you have the roof, just glue on your columns, add a platform, and done!.  Don't mess with the fiddly frame ...

Good advice - nobody is really going to see the frame anyway.

Simple and effective! I will remember that for when my frontier gaming ventures south to "Florida Man" territory...  lol

You just gave me an idear.....

"Florida man" random event cards for my TSATF games!

Yeah, I like it!   I'm sure I won't need a whole lot of time to get some examples!  He'll, stuff I do: pick up poisonous snakes to see if their friendly, swim after sharks to see what kind,  basically treat the estiaries and swamps like petting zoos.
