Using the contest to bring a long planned idea to the table. Hopefully.
-
Fun! This your first BSC?
-
Good luck.
-
Sounds cool, will it be 28mm scale?
-
Fun! This your first BSC?
Yes, not nervous at all ;)
Sounds cool, will it be 28mm scale?
That's the plan - might end up more of a frigate or destroyer than cruiser, will have to see.
-
Cool, sounds like it's going to be a bit of a beast either way.
-
Yes, not nervous at all ;)
Welcome! We're here to support you and help get it done. The goal is always something pretty on the table.
-
Cruiser? Sounds fun... does that mean it will be a waterborne vessel, or a big wheeled contraption?
:)
-
Looking at water borne. I've long enjoyed the fantasy dwarf fleet aesthetic of iron clad steam ships. I really like the sleekness of the unfortunately OOP Uncharted seas ...

Which built on the Man o War imagery from Games workshop ...

Both Mantic Armada, and GW Dreadfleet build on the aesthetic, but go a little more mad ...

So, need to start....
I love reusing old stuff - growing up with Blue Peter, then Rogue trader and Necromunda everything from AFV's to hab blocks were made from rubbish. I have boxes full of broken toys and other stuff which will (I assure my lovely wife) someday be transformed into marvellous models and scenery.
I also love a good pun (or a bad one, I'm not fussy). So when various dwarf fleets came out as iron clads, and even called Iron fleets, I have wanted to build a fleet for my dwarves, out of old irons. Opportunity to collect broken ones came as I volunteered to do PAT testing for a local charity shop, and this competition has given me impetus to get the box out and start.

Looking through, 2 are the sort of profile shape I'm looking for for this project - the Breville and the Tefal, so I've etaken those 2 apart and removed the electricals and stuff.

The Tefal has a flatter top, which could make life a little easier, but I'll keep going with both for now. Out with a saw next I think.
-
I am intrigued. I am watching this with interest.
-
Ooh, a trash-bash, we haven't had one of those in a few years. Excellent to see
-
so I've etaken those 2 apart and removed the electricals and stuff.
Where is your sense of adventure man? Looking forward to see where you go from here.
-
Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
-
this is going to be good...
-
The iron fleet... lol
I love the idea and the shapes are actually suitable too, in a weird kind of way they are quite dwarvish. Oh the irony of it all...
-
You should use the brand names for the ship names.
The Breville and the Tefal of the Iron Fleet. lol
-
All looking very promising. You'll do well if you press on...
-
can you keep the steam function?
-
So, a bit of progress despite the lack of updates!
A bit of cutting and considering and there is a more definite plan forming.
The good ship IS Tefal is looking sleek, fast and deadly. Made to get in close and devastate the unfoprtunate enemy with massed broadsides supplemented with longer range cannon on turrets amidships and aft.
IS Breville is slowere moving and a steady platform, making it an ideal design for using it's lomg range cannon to shipe at the enemy, while launching gyrocopters as recce, gunnery spotters, and attack craft.

IS Tefal turrets are spice jar lids, with a manifold made of telephone extension triplers. The cannon are old styli for mobiles. I'm using the backplates from the irons to be the aft decks - that's been a fun job to glue! Hatches for the deck cannon will be old bits of mdf that were the 'sprues' from a ttcombat kit.
Funnels have been exercising my brain -but I think I have settled on what I want - just need to find the bits.
-
Ooo these are shaping up nicely.
-
Nice work!
-
Oh, a good proper trashbash. Really looking forward to seeing these two progress!
-
Very impressed work; I just love bits of old crap morphing into something unique.
-
Love the re-cycling.
-
I think this may be my favourite so far... sheer madness and ingenuity.
-
:o Amazing :o
-
Very nice indeed.
-
Nice work so far.
-
A bit more progress.
IS Tefal has a new highlight with its' funnels - working out what to use for the shape I wanted took a while, and I was pleased that some had been donated to the charity shop I volunteer at :).

IS Breville has its' sniper turret plugged in.. The gyrocopter posing on the 'flight deck' is from harlequin, now sold by Black tree design https://eoeorbisuk.com/collections/fantasy/products/fa7981-dwarf-copter?variant=4539100867 (http://)

Cannons and armourplates next I think, and then the horror of rivets (hopefully no-ones counting).
-
Those look amazing. And the funnels from old highlighters are great
-
Really sad that a couple of folks have dropped out - I've been really enjoying watching all the builds.
A bit of progress - IS Tefal is getting there. I've been concentrating on this one, hoping to at least finish one of the two. Panels are nearly done. Debating whether I actually hate myself enough to do rivets.

IS Breville has much less progress ...

-
Debating whether I actually hate myself enough to do rivets.
Do it, you know you want tooo.
Also;
Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on,.......
-
Those look great - for some reason I am particularly enamoured with the chimney stacks.
-
Debating whether I actually hate myself enough to do rivets.
It only hurts after the first couple of hundred!! lol lol
-
Such an awesome trashbash, they're both shaping up really nicely. Maybe concentrate on just the one ironclad for BSC and finish the other afterward?
-
Never would have guessed IS Tefal started life as an iron...except for the name maybe. It looks grand.
-
Assorted crap coalescing into such a detailed model is my favourite build.
You've done a marvellous job.
-
Rivets - who said that was a good idea????
Still more to go o_o

-
Rivets - who said that was a good idea????
Everything is better with rivets! lol lol
Very nice work so far.
-
That looks like a beast. Can't believe it started off as an iron.
-
splendid work... is that front turret a bit downward pointing or is it just the picture?
-
splendid work... is that front turret a bit downward pointing or is it just the picture?
I've checked and better checked - think it's just the picture.
-
This looks better every time :o
-
Brilliant. It's come together very nicely.
-
Final build pics - with a primer coat.
Rivets ended up being nail decoration half pearls. Found a few in the charity shop I volunteer in, and had to buy more to finish. Cannon muzzles are off an old set of fairy lights.

Really enjoyed this build. It's been a stretch to have a deadline and seeing the competition - those builds are excellent! I am desperate now to finish IS Breville, and start more of the fleet ... but I have necromunda and mordheim builds first!
-
Great looking model -well done. :-*
-
That certainly fit the bill. Very nice work.
-
Yes, great build from tat, just the thing I love.
-
A dwarf ship wright would be proud.
-
I really like the hammer at the bow. Nice touch.
-
yep, that hammer is a nice touch... what scale is it? are there any hatches or deck access?
-
Thanks for all your kind comments. I have really appreciated the encouragement through the competition.
It's nominally 28mm. It's a bit tight, but will do I think.
There were meant to be deck hatches. I had forgotten. They are there now :D. Thanks for pointing that out. They are commercial parts (the best I could find in the last minute panic search of bits drawers. From Blotz https://blotz.co.uk/product/hatches-28mm/ (https://blotz.co.uk/product/hatches-28mm/)
The hammer was a left over piece from another mdf kit (from TTCombat iirc).
-
That looks fantastic in primer, can't wait to see it fully painted.
-
Photos received!
