Well, I seem to be a bit rubbish at maintaining multiple threads of anything so I figured I would try and condense it into one.
Those of you that have seen others of my threads, for over a decade I helped to put on and run participation games at Salute. Other commitments and, lets just say, some incredibly negative remarks from one person, just put me off doing more at this time. It just sucked the enthusiasm out of it for me which is why there hasn't been so much from me recently, as well as some real life stuff.
Anyway, it seems that my long time love affair with Necromunda got me back on the getting stuff done train...

This was the first one, it was a test of concept more than anything else. I had a can of Mechanicus Standard Grey and wanted to start the ball rolling. So I threw that down as a base. Hit it with a dark brown wash and then got out the sponge to give it a good going over with Reeve's artist acrylic Burnt Umber. Then I got out GW's Ryza Rust technical paint and applied it to areas of the Burnt Umber - but importantly, not all of it, and mainly focusing on the lower half of the bulkheads. The last step for now, was getting as good a high end silver as I have, Vallejo air silver I think it its, and just hit some of the rusty edges with that.
I think I might add some other technical stuff at a later date, blood effect, some of GW's chaos puss type stuff, some other suggestions of water staining and then some posters/graff maybe. The main thing for me at this point was to get a set of terrain tabletop ready. And I had enough of a lot of it just sitting there waiting for that to happen.
The design of these was a process of being fed up of all the mdf makers having different heights and also missing the detail those plastic bulkheads give. Sheed plastic offcuts courtesy of 6milphil glued to the mdf platforms, in this instance from Kromlech via Dark Sphere in London.
The others follow the same build approach and painting technique.

With these I didn't hit them with a wash. I found it got lost amongst the grey, but looking at the red building, I feel like it could do it to help bring out some of the detail before I hit it with the rust paint. The 2nd grey building used Army Painters space wolf grey equivalent and is much closer to the colour of the original 1995 GW cardboard platforms.
I have some more bits I am sorting out images for before I post them. :D
-
Awesome work, the red is really eye-catching :-*
-
I like your rust effect.
-
McFonz - they look great. The good thing about getting any part of a project to this point is that they’re tabletop ready (and lovely) but you can always go back later to add more to them. I like the colour variations but particularly the red platform - it’s spot on.
I sympathise with the real world getting in the way (maybe an understatement considering the last couple of years lol ). Who is this rude individual? (I obviously don’t want you to name names) I’m getting to that part in my life where all tolerance for such behaviour is pretty much gone and my internal Viking ancestry is sharpening their axes and bidding farewell to their loved ones :D. Luckily LAF is the last bastion of reasonable, polite and supportive toy-loving grown ups.
Keep up the good work,
Andrew

Thanks for the start to finish series of photos. I have to be honest, I was shocked when I saw the red color pop up... lol I thought you were going for a grimy abandoned piece of equipment and then...BOOM!
Looks great, though. :-*

That is beautiful work.
-
That's really effective, good to see you back at it.
-
Welcome back to it Fonz :)
The buildings look absolutely great; the grey and red are both perfect for the subject matter and I particularly like the subtle striping here and there. Don't write off the brown wash; consiously you might not directly see it, but your eye does pick up the minute colour modulation and it absolutely adds to the look.
The weathering is very good too; simple but effective is what we all strive for after all ;)
I'm looking forward to your next installment!
Also; I'm 100% with BaLM on this one; no consideration or patience for haters anymore. Life is to short to spend it on negativity. And there's our small island of civility and hobby enthousiasm in the roiling ocean that is the internet instead; the LAF...

great looking terrain.

Sorry if the images are coming out huge, imgur doesn't seem to edit them in the way it used to and instead does weird stuff to them if I try to shrink or crop them? :?
I found a little lot of stuff on facebook marketplace last year. I wanted it mainly for the Necromunda stuff so was able to split and sell other bits to make some money back. Some of what I was left with was parts of the Necromunda market set. Enough to make two and a half stalls, a small, a large and half a large...
The first one a sort of curiosities stall with random valuable artefacts etc:
The 2nd was missing the back piece so I made do with a section of ruin that was in the same lot. This, for me, lent it more towards being a guns and ammo stall.
The two together (the third is underway).

Nice! That Necromunda market kit is very useful - I used one to make tarps for vehicle conversions!

Well, I seem to be a bit rubbish at maintaining multiple threads of anything so I figured I would try and condense it into one.
Better than being rubbish in general. Just moved into an apartment, don't even have a table to put things on, much less any knack for creating such things.
You certainly have the knack. So say we all!
To my shame, I know too well. Plenty of positive comments from others still leaves the sting...
Well, trying to add a positive suggestion, for the stalls, I suggest you have a look at cheap plastic beads.
Some look like carved terracotta, perfect for desert caravan stops, but others, painted metallic, would look great on shelves as various wares.
Thanks for sharing!

I love those stalls. Are those staples binding the cloth together...? If so, great idea -- looks like metal wire!

Yeah, they are one of the details on them in the kit - it's really lovely. There is so much stuff I haven't yet used as well.

I've made one of the goods displays top right but don't actually like how it looks. Which is why I stood the weapon rack upright at the back of the stall I made for guns and ammo. I have another frame which I am going to use plasticard with to make another stall and will plough ahead with the one I built.
Other bits and bobs will crop up in terrain builds I suspect. I try to give each piece a bit of a "snapshot" feel, a hint at something just happening. I've built a walkway with a service hatch open with tools lying next to it, like someone has been disturbed by gunfire and scarpered mid-repair.

I thought I would share a little of my process for terrain although some of it isn't relevant for all if that makes sense. Several years ago, I spotted a lot on ebay of mdf sci fi terrain. I clicked on the listing to find it was TTcombat selling off some prototypes. Essentially they did all of the templates, cut them and made sure they could all fit together before going back and adding in all of the detail you normally get on their kits. It was something silly like £20, too good a bargain to pass up on.
So here is one such platform.
Now, this was an early one where I chamfered the plasticard that incerts into the bulkheads, my advice - don't do this as it then misses some of the pips that help hold it in place. I can get away with this as the 2nd platform for this building avoided that issue so there is enough hold between the two.
The purpose for this is that whilst mdf designs have come a long way, they are often described as still being very flat. Some companies produce budget mdf kits deliberately without frills so to speak.
Well, something as simple as cereal box cardboard can be your friend. In this instance, adding a raised lip around the grill sections to give the impression of grates. If you look back at the red building, it uses the same platforms as these, I am simply repeating the process, though I am going to try some different details this time too.
Some melta/plasma/energy weapon/acid damage having blasted through a grill section like someone was shooting from below at a target above.
Looking at it, I could be a little braver and fully carve one level in two to be spread over more levels but I think I'll keep it as is for now.
Finally, I am looking for a relatively inexpensive 3x3 non-vinyl gaming mat for this kind of set up. I have a 6x4 and whilst that has it's uses, in reality, I'm playing much smaller skirmish games at the moment. Suggestions and advice welcome. :)
-
McFonz - what an excellent purchase, I can totally see the value in having the bare bones to work from (still trying to gather my nerves and “improve” my already built 4ground kits, they look ok but could be great). It’s the little details that make the difference - looking forwards to seeing what you’ll do with these kits.

Gotta luv a bargain. :D
Good work on your improvements.

Time for some faction focus I feel. I'll start with a slightly long running obsession with Heresy Miniatures Trenchcoat Gang... This started back when they first appeared and Necromunda appeared to be mothballed indefinitely. They were, then, the best stand in Delaques going, better than the original GW sculpts I felt...
The whole crew so far... I have quite a few more!
The two models I use as leader options. The one on the left was the original, where as the one on the right was just too good for me not to get as an alternative. I can always run one as a champ if using the other.
Heavy/special weapons. I probably should have added the sniper rifle in here but meh. The chap 2nd from the left is a conversion having contacted Andy at Heresy Miniatures to see if I could purchase separate parts to do it. It's the support weapon and arm from his trooper range combined with the energy cannon Trenchcoat miniature. I wanted something that could pass a bit more as a heavy bolter etc. The minigun is a heavy stubber, then you have a flamethrower and a missile launcher... something for every occaision! ;D
(https://i.imgur.com/VxrpVEE.jpg)
The crew! Some of these I use to represent other Delaque special gang types for the latest version of Necromunda but essentially these are all the standard ganger types I have completed at the moment. A special mention to the katana drawing chap in the front row who was painted up mid-campaign in 2018 when one of my gangers kept getting eye injuries so became a bad shot... sword and pistol later and he became some weird, sword wielding underhive version of Daredevil.
Noobs. And a case of spot the odd one out. The front one is a model from the Void range. I think a civilian pack or something. Just looked too good not to use so pulled him out of my pile. It may have been before Heresy Minis produced a Noob model. In any case, his repeated exploits at the club I attend has seen him named as the "Converse Kid" for his love of his red footwear!

I've always really liked these figs, my favourite being the rotund bloke with the launcher. I just never never seem to get around to picking them up.
Nice PJs :)
-
Hi Mcfonz,
I too have a selection of these most excellent figures, some of Andy's best I would say. They are just for want of a better word cool.
The katana drawing figure is my gang leader who is simply known as "Priestly" because I did notice a certain (maybe tenuous?) resemblance to a certain well know game designer ;) :D Mine have dark brown leather trench coats.
I have some new Delaques but I prefer these, as the new ones are almost alien like.
Keep up the good work.

Some of the pieces have already been built and used, the image with the two built and painted market stalls has them atop a grey platform with hazard stripes and railings - that was another of the pieces. I got a number of those platform pieces but not enough parts to make supports for all of them... nor would you really want a table full of platforms all of the same height with the same support underneath - that will become a focus in the future as I have plans! :D ;D
Oh, found a pic or two! First is the original stack of MDF, the 2nd is of the large refinery piece I was starting to put together for a participation game for Salute and then got used for Diceni too. It got deconstructed during my last house move and to be fair, was a pig to store so will be reduced down to different pieces of terrain that will be easier to store.

I love the Heresy gangers, they look great! Andy makes nice stuff, I have a bunch of his stuff.
Your terrain is excellent, Necromunda has a special place in my heart and I dearly love the old bulkhead pieces.

These are the best Delaques I‘ve ever seen - both in sculpting and painting plus basing as well! Awesome job that man!

High praise indeed! Thank you. I'm far from the greatest painter but I like to think I get a good table top level out of my brushes! :)
The bases are a case of KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid. They are offcuts of plasticard that I keep for this sort of thing. I then apply some little tips and things I picked up over the years such as making indentations to suggest where screws/rivets are counter sunk, rather than having them as proud trip-hazards. I do get that the grimdark future has a lot of trip hazards... skulls, large rivets, cables, precariously balanced rocks that people stand on etc... ;D
It's just a case of dirtying them up effectively and adding some details that still suggest underhive. These bases were started before the new release of Necromunda so I stuck with it rather than rebasing them all. :)

Right, more miniatures time! This time the Goliath gang I have painted so far.
The boss is a conversion/kitbash using an Age of Sigmar chaos body, arms, head, plates etc from the Goliath kit and the chest plate from a space marine. I wanted a leader that looked different - this was before the extra kit came out with the stimmer, boss and prospects.
The 'Zerker is a 3d sculpt and print, sculpted by a friend of mine over in Berlin. I think the teeth need a bit of neatening up on the paintjob but I think he's a fun model. He's yet to see action though sadly!
The rest of the gang:
Oh, and I realised I had missed this out. Another conversion, this time using a warmachine warjack - a mercenary one I think. I believe the drill arm is from a 40k Ork kit, the shoulder mounted flamer comes from an AT43 walker combined with another part of a kit I found in my bits box. This was designed to be an ambot for the Goliath gang... sorta fits. ;D

Taking a break from the more Necromunda heavy stuff I thought I'd share one or two other bits and pieces. I know I have shared my Xeno - All Out War participation game stuff on here before so won't revisit stuff I have done unless I take pics of in game action etc. That said, there is stuff that I have bought and intended to use for it but not yet had the chance to put on the table.

These chaps are intended to operate as space pirate types or scummy mercs for hire types. Essentially, your basic thieving, not very nice, guns for hire / pirates. The intended leader (sword and pistol) is from Crooked Dice, the others are from Checkpoint Miniatures. From what I can see they fit in fine, though not as chunky, with the Stargrave stuff and oldschool GW metals from Rogue Trader and 2nd Edition. I might add to these in the future and when they have been deployed for dice rolling!
These two are intended to be the start of a selection of penal colony type folks. I can't find it at the moment but I found a free stl of some robot types that I had a couple printed of with the intention of being the "guards". Anyway, the one on the left here is a Fenris Games hill billy miniature with a headswap with a GW flagellant head. The one on the right is a Hasslefree miniature that was badly mangled by one of the kids I work with. The head swapped out for a plastic GW catachan one and the arms swapped out for some from Anvil industries. I need to try and find some decals that look like prison numbers... Again, for use with the same setting as the pirates.
-
Great stuff; they're alll suitably scummy and not types I'd ask to keep an eye on my bike 8)
And it may be me, but the scum guy on the far right makes me think of pineapple for some reason... :D
-
Great looking scum, those CP minis really pop with your painting style.
Love these penal types, great kitbashing!

Slow progress at the moment, but then, that's to be expected with a 7week old son in the mix! lol
The next market stall, WIP, needs finishing touches. The fabric isn't finished and there are some details to add once the main stall is done. I'm leaving the signs on all of them until last.

A couple of details added to the next platform & bulkhead building. Contemplating what colour to do it, or whether to go red again and slightly change the yellow markings so the two could be stacked if desired. Little maintenance hatches made from squares of cardboard and hinges from clipped paper clip (these look really convincing when painted).
Just a base prepped for the next miniature to join the trenchcoat gangers. WIP as the wires and the yellow trip hazard stripes haven't been finished yet. Not going to do the black and yellow hazard stripes on this, just yellow.
Lastly, a couple of shots of a WIP game at a friends place. The trenchies took on the enforcers and managed to do... ok! ;D They fought the law and the law... drew? :D Though the poor juve didn't stand a chance!

Which means it's on to the next one. Thanks to some help from Ragsta I can now fully stock this stand. I give to you the explosives trader. Nothing says 'hazard' more than an open stall of unexploded ordinance! ;D

A 4mth old son makes for slow hobby progress at times, especially when you have a few projects on the go! This particular piece has been planned for a good couple of years, possibly since lock down, and had parts printed for a good year before printing enough of them to do this with.

Not remotely done yet but getting the bare bones of the structure in place. I want to include some LEDs into this one so will cut a base out for it with the centre cut out so I can add gubbins inside. If this pans out ok, I have two more of the floor plates I think. I'll make another double height and add in some gantries around it.
The basic concept is that it's a sci fi hill. It's line of sight blocking whilst adding height and a platform. This means I can add further structures on top or keep it as is and just add scatter terrain. It could be a landing platform or a structure that a small huddle of shacks are clustered around on top. Essentially just a flexible height giver whilst helping reduce table level firing lanes and adding some atmosphere.
The plan is that the bottom will be detailed out to look like workshops/stores with shutters closed and dwellings. Things like waste/rubbish bags, discarded items and some wall mounted tech will help bring it to life as part of a hive world/sci fi setting.

That piece is going to look great! I wish I had a better understanding (and supply) of LEDs. All I can manage to do is somehow work a flickering LED candle into a larger piece of terrain...

In fairness, that's about all of the knowledge I have to, but for everything else, there's youtube. I have some very basic 25yr old A Level design tecg soldering skills stored in my grey matter somewhere!! lol

To give you an idea of what I'm trying to achieve with the basic part of the project...

The individual buildings will be bagged up for protection and ease of assembly. The scatter terrain will be stored and transported in seperate boxes.

Hmmm, is linking to imgur not working anymore?

If you right click open image in new tab it's visible, maybe it'sbecause of having to ok the cookies on imgur???

They probably frown upon hotlinking their hosted pictures; no ad-revenue that way... ::)
Nice terrain though. I especially like the verdigris on the old necromunda bulkheads :)

Sorted, don't click the 'copy link' option, right click and 'copy image address'... which is why I couldn't do it on my phone, which is bloomin silly.

I changed tac for a bit owing to the sort of time I'm getting and went for undercoating every piece with the aim of working through them as I get time. It gave me the chance to test my theory too.
They all fit into the 2017 starter set, each building in it's own bag and then a bag with the walkways in it.
Everything bar the scatter and the two fancier (one featured earlier in the thread and the ornate one) walkways is from the box. The mat is a 3x3 sci fi battlesystems one that I paid just over £21 for from Zatu, which are local to me so collected in person. The table is about 4" short on one side so it's not quite 3x3. That said, the coverage isn't too far off. I need to build some more walkways that will go in the box. I have plenty of scatter, this was just a test to see how it would look with the main structures.
Reminds me that I need to get gluing the parts to the next market stall. :D
(https://i.imgur.com/SfTZyRq.jpeg)
This was at work, on shift, so ran a couple of solo games on it. Needs more scatter really. I have that though, and plan to make more. I also have more buildings at home but am hoping that I can make this my travel set with more ornate things or buildings that travel less well to be used at home and saved for one off big games rather than club use etc.
I'm happy with how this is progressing so far.
-
Looks good - and that's a really nice base mat too. :)
