Maybe... possibly a 17thC coach house instead.
As I have a simultaneous project running that has to be done slightly before the BSC deadline this will be tight!
-
Good luck with the tight deadlines.

Sounds like you're a glutton for punishment :o

Nothing like multiple projects to focus your mind :)

I have had plans for a while now to build a piece of waterfront of a far eastern seaport for Pulp Alley, inspired by photos of Macau pre-WW2. Fortunately there many photos online available to reference:

As sampans are relatively easy to find, I am going to build a decent sized Junk as the kick-off for this project. Something along these lines:

This being my current favourite, even though it doesn't have a sail:

I will probably use XPS foam as the base and then clad it in Foamex, sheet styrene and/or balsa wood.
-
Looking forward to this build, as I have need for one of these in 15mm as well. Eventually.
-
Nice, I looking forward to this. I always liked the silhouette of the Junk.
-
Looking forward to seeing your junk!
Wait, that didn't sound right...

For a second I was wondering how you would be modeling a website like Temu or AliExpress, but it all makes sense now...

What are we... ten days into this affair and I have finally got something to post. ::)

I actually got the foam foundation cut and glued together last weekend- and then it sat.... After much contemplation on how I was going to go from there, I finally started cutting sheet styrene and gluing on the hull planking. I think once I get going this and the decking will go pretty quickly.
Junks look to have a fairly slanted deck (some of them anyway) but model for war gaming with a slanted deck could pose problems for models staying up right so I am using the hull planking to give the illusion that the deck slants when viewed from the side.
-
Looks like a pretty solid start sir. I do like a boat so eager to see more.
-
what glue did you use for the plasticard against the foam?
-
VERY nice work so far. :o
-
That’s a cracking start 8)
-
Excellent start.
How did you get the plasticard to curve so neatly?
-
very nice start
-
Very tidy plasticard work.
I'm impressed.
-
Also joining the "that looks like an awesome start, how did you get the plastic to adhere to the foam?" chorus.
So many glues don't work on foam, and curved plastic card under tension can be hard enough to make behave with full-on solvent cements and other things that aren't an option anywhere near insulation foam!
-
I don't have a any real magic for getting the sheet styrene to bend. I had an old bottle of Gorilla Glue that was starting to thicken; I mixed that with a bit of water until it starts to go opaque, and then smeared it on one of the surfaces. In that state, it grabs very quickly and I just held it in place with my hands for about 5 minutes until it really started to set. You can't see it in the photos, but it did start to pull away a bit along the deck; that is not a big deal as the gap is going to get covered with decking.
-
Progress is slooow.... scribing, cutting and gluing the planking and decking is a bit tedious here as I should have had a better plan when I started but alas.

The decking is scribed, 1mm foamed PVC (foamex) from Greenstuff World.

Now I am adding the inner planking; after that, the cabin, mast and sail should be pretty quick.
-
Just wow!! :o
-
That is looking very good so far ;)
-
Looks great.
-
very nice, indeed
-
Coming along fine.
-
My Junk is looking less and less junk like :-[:
However, I think by adding a sampan style roof I think I can make it less like a run of the mill boat and more far eastern.

The sails of Junks are practically a defining feature, but the sail will be furled on this model as it will be docked for the table I am envisaging the Junk to be used on.
-
I think you're right about the roof. She's looking good too.
-
There's a reason ship hulls all have the same(ish) shape; over the course of history, we've found out that that's generally the most efficient shape.
It's only natural that your junk looks like a generic boat/ship at this point. Once the superstructure takes shape, the junkiness will come back for sure.
One thing I noticed is that there is a difference in the height of the stern between your build and the picture of your favourite junk; yours is a lot flatter/even/horizontal right now. Perhaps raising the stern significantly will help in getting the shape you're after?
The ship does look really good btw... :)

I did think of that. Traditionally, large Junks had big overhanging transoms, and tall sterns; some with a very sloping decks like my favourite. I flattened it for game play (I don't plan on including accurate rigging for the same reason) and as my target period for these games is the 1930's to '50's, this boat shows the influence of western ship building that started in the 1700's. The sail design is really what seems to be a defining feature of Junks of the last 100 years as the hulls have become increasingly western in design.
-
I am pretty sure that once you build the roof it will look more like junk. Sorry, a junk. lol Again, very well done. This competition is always tough, but this year it is going to be tight.

You were right - it definitely looks a bit more far eastern with that roof.

The mast is done and the boom with furled sail is almost finished.
I just have to add a few more details to the hull and then she is ready for primer I think.

VERY nice work!! :o :o :o
-
Impressive!

Thank you for the compliments boys. Though, I do feel like there is much better builds than this one in this competition.

You must be Kidding. I am waiting to see how yours turned out.

In total agreement with snitcythedog, this build is awesome.
