In an effort to disengage from Facebook I've been looking for the somewhere else to post info about our wargame club. Is there any mileage in having a board on LAF about wargaming clubs and shows? Clubs could post up their games and details; shows could post their info and people could post their show reports . It would help spread info about what is around. You never know someone might suddenly realise there is a hot bed of gaming in their neighbourhood. Any thoughts?

I think it would be useful.
How useful will depend on how many people post on it.

Hi Jon,
As a solo wargamer all I can say is bring it on, you never know I may find something local that I don't know about :D

If it is organized by region and towns and not just by show name, and definitely include event dates as sub divisions, it would be very useful. If I have to sift through a non-alphabetized list without sense of geography and time I won’t get past the first dozen on the list very often. The list needs to be curated. TMP once had a totally useless list because of this lack of acumen in presenting the data. (Or sheer laziness)
I travel a lot on business on short notice and find myself with free time in strange towns but many cons/clubs just keep marketing to themselves and are too easily overlooked. Even the bigger/older shows/clubs an be quite insular. Listing just a name of an venue with no hint of its geography or timeframe, expecting someone to go find all that on an individual Facebook page does little to entice new blood.
If LAF wants to create a show and club listing folder I would be more than happy to moderate and curate the listings.

A really good point. Too many show adverts seem to be written for people who already know about the show. Sometimes it can be quite hard to even know what country the show is in, let alone where in that country.

For starters, we do have the Events and Conventions (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?board=31.0) board, and there's also the Calendar function (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=calendar).
You're all quite welcome to post topics there, and given suitable titles including regional cues and short descriptors these would be displayed in the Unread Posts view for anyone who uses it.
I will admit, though, that it isn't as prominent as a top-level board. I wouldn't be averse to moving it to the New Stuff board area to give it some more exposure, but that's not my decision to make.
I would advise against setting up sub-boards, since those tend to splinter people's attention. Announcement threads of past events could be regularly pruned to keep down the clutter, whereas convention report threads with images could be archived later on.

Neither of those boards provide any guidance towards region, town or date or sorting. Frankly quite useless. Seriously, why force one to sift through birthdays of people we don’t even know real names for, not even the location?
I’ll argue “splintering of attention”. is exactly what you want here. We are looking for a tool to find an organization or event in a particular region at a particular time that threshes out all the chaff. Bulletin boards are not the paradigm needed.

Not sure if possible but perhaps have a board at which only the moderators can create new topics. Each topic is dedicated to a continent/country/region/city depending on activity at which people can post the latest current activity. OP post could be used for gathering lists of gaming clubsin that region.

Any poster should always have the venue’s time, place, and the name in that order as part of the subject.

if we have regional boards, could we include players or gaming groups as well?

To be honest -this would interest me far more than the shows; although I doubt I'll find anyone else in New Brunswick!

Yes, it could be much like the back of the 1970s AH General magazine which had a by state opponents wanted listing. clubs and cons are fist of all about meeting other like minded people. indeed a single player is just a club in the making.

So how do we get this desire for a meetup tool in front of a LAF administrator who has the power to allow or implement it?
-
Someone will read it eventually, ;) but given current and upcoming regulation, it is unlikely we will be able to implement anything containing personal data pursuant GDPR and UK laws.
I have stickied your Club Database topic on the Events Board for the time being and we will see what else could be done.

Laws!?! What could be possibly a violation?
