Title: Hero space star crusade quest wars
Post by: jhonpog on March 23, 2025, 06:09:27 AM
Join me friends as I attempt to make a mash up of a few games into one to play with my kids and maybe others.  Here's what happens when I mix heroquest with space crusade with star wars....

Last year my kids and I enjoyed playing the old school hero quest game, with a number of home-brew rules.  We had may highly entertaining games and I am now wanting to play another set of games with them but with a Star wars focus.

I've found some material on-line for adapting hero quest to star wars but I thought I would throw space crusade into the mix to see what might happen :)

I have a somewhat stalled 1/43rd scale collection that got bogged down in terrain building that I am going to use as the foundation for this game. These figures are a bit bigger than star wars legion but very close and maybe similar to Shatterpoint.

"Why not just buy Imperial Assault and be done with it you fool" I hear you ask.  I used to have a couple of sets of space crusade and enjoyed how hard to was to complete missions as the marine player.  The game balance was very well done and I want to replicate that as much as possible.

I'll be posting pics of figures and the boards soon.  Be warned I am an average painter at best and time has not been kind to my eyeballs :)

Any suggestions or comments are more than welcome

I don't have any suggestions but I applaud the project.

Please keep us updated.

Thanks Hubba will do.  I've got a fair bit of the pieces required and am working on a test board now.

In the original game the marine players start on a docking ramp attached to the side of the space hulk. I'm not sure how to translate this into a star wars setting yet; some kind of rebel alliance drop ship or something....

The opening scene of Starwars a new hope springs to mind, some poor stormies trying to bring the Empire's truth to those dirty Rebel scum lol

Yeah that totally works as game scenario Hubba. I might try this and see if the simple game mechanics work.
Here's two quick pics of where I'm going.  This is my test board and is based on the t-junction section of space crusade.  The room sizes are the same but the square sizes are 40mm not 25mm.

I just used grey spray cans and black pen mostly.  The rooms are varied to make the board less boring. I may do another pass of detailing once all is made.  I've decided to stay away from any 3d features to make them easy to store etc etc.

The second pic is my squad of gretchin-equivalents.  Imperial army troopers from dark fire designs (i think).  I need 14 and have 8 so will some more printed.  These guys have a low armour value, low attack value and ok movement.  They will only do damage in groups.  So that kind of fits the imperial army quite well I reckon.

I will (may) replace with better pics soon

For this game I am going to make the following substitutes:

Gretchin (14 minis)  - Imperial army troopers
Orcs (8 minis) - Scout troopers
Androids (4 minis) - Those k2 androids from Rogue 1/andor
Chaos marines (5 minis)- Stormtroopers inlcuding and officer and heavy weapons
Gene stealer (3 minis) - Probe droids
Dreadnaught (1 mini) - At pt

Space marine commander (3 minis) - Any star wars hero-type figure
Space marines (12 mini's) - rebel commandoes, pathfinders, fleet troopers etc

I have a small collection of 40mm figures; some are 3d printed in FDM and resin, some are modified legion size, some are whatever I can convert or modify.

I think these substitutions work quite well.  Probe droids will make great gene stealers, the atpt print I have is small enough to fit on the boards but large enough to be mech-like.  Stormtroopers make great armoured marines.

For blip tokens and cards I am salvaging a couple of star wars monopoly games; one edition has a bunch of red token that will work for blips and I can use the cards to replace the space crusade ones. This addition also conveniently has 4 x 40mm figures; only a couple are useful however.

The hero-quest part of this game will be in that the players will control character figures with a supporting squad and I'll be adding loot into the game for them to collect.  I'm also planning to add in  droids to assist the players. I just think that will be more fun.

Here's a few pics of my minis so far.

4 Stormtroopers (I need an officer and heavy weapons)
1 At pt (pretty happy with this for an FDMprint)
Probe droids (1 is a WOTC probe droid much better scaled to 1/43rd IMO)
WIP androids. I had some spare resin rifles so have added them in.  They are pretty much the same as the androids from space crusade so are a good fit

For the rebels have:

Converted legion rebel troopers (I mucked around with them but mainly extended their legs)
Some resin prints ( I think they are darkfire designs)
Converted recast toy soldiers (these are airfix british commando knock offs.  It just what I had and they scale nicely)

I need at most 9 standard troopers for the rebels plus heavy weapons and leaders. I am struggling to find the right minis for these last two so it you have suggestions let me know!

My minis are painted to a table top standard so I'm not going to do lots of close ups of the figures:)

Next up will be to crank out 3 more boards and the dividing walls

Your tiles look pretty good, especially inthe close ups.

I'm not sure about the droids as genestealers, the droids were typically destroyed with one shot no? Whereas the stealers are real monsters.

I guess if it works for you it's all good.

Nice figs, sepecially the army troopers.

Thanks Hubba:)  Good question about the genestealers/ probe droids.

The main reasons I went that way was:

*I had to put them somewhere :)
*The android slot was taken :)
*In the original game there's an event card where they pop up out of nowhere which kind of fits a probe droid
*If you recall the dialogue of empire strikes back Han Solo , after destroying the probe droid, says something like "I didn't hit it that hard, it must have had a self-destruct"  so I'm going with probe droids being tougher than the movie shows.

I'm pretty happy with the tile- Star warsy enough but also none of the rooms are too specific.

Do like the look of the sci-fi tiles a lot :)

Thanks very much Talysman :)

It's super easy to do; just spray cans and I use bit of wood to mask off each area. Then black pen ( and I hope I don't make a mistake) plus a bit of white paint.

I hope to get more fancy as I go. the reality is I'll probably try and take as many shortcuts as I can

Thanks anevilgiraffe yup black pen, ruler and fear :)

I'm trying to make something appealing to look at but without taking too much time or $$ to get the thing done.

Got the androids painted up. once again don't look too close just turn your head and squint a bit :)
Still they are not bad for fdm prints and easy to modify with some resin rifles I had lying around

In the background is a test door I got from thingiverse. I've stretched it a bit to cover the 80mm doorways.  Looks ok I think not too big relative to the figures and the gameboard.  I plan to mold 2 of these and cast up enough for the game (24 I think)

Love them both! Now, that's something I would pick up at a game store or convention. A pack of windows and doors! Yours looks great...

Thanks Mikedemana.  The doors are just FDM prints stretched to fit the openings.  but yeah I reckon they'll look good.  Based of imperial assault doors I think. I was going to get fancy and have open and closed versions like in HQ but I think for now I'll just have to remove them from the board and that counts as 'open' :)

Here's board 2 basically done. I am working on board 3 and 4 at the same time.  This board is....fine?  I am wondering whether they are going to look too bland when put together.

The original SC game has 1 target room on each board:  reactor, command centre, loadingbay, machine room or something like that.  I've tried to replicate this a bit without getting too specific.  I might have to put a bit of variety into the walls, perhaps add some aurebesh.  Oh well I'll see how it looks once it's together

Hi all

Here's boards 3 and 4. I'm on the wall pieces now.  I'm going to try and make them with a bit of detail on the walls, not too bland but has to be completed quickly or this project will stall

Do I ever really finish anything?   Not really more like finished-enough :)

Really Cool Idea. Once you've done this you need to work on Jabba's Palace! :)

:O  ha ha thanks Beefcake.  The boards do have an unpainted underside so I could do something once I've got this done :)

Next steps are:

Make the wall pieces (in progress)
Get in additional figures printed (in progress) and painted
Buy 2 sets of star wars monopoly for cards and tokens (got 1 need 1 more)
Work out scenarios/ adapt SC rules (in progress)
Mould and cast up doors (got 3 printed ones. The resin I have has expired so no casting yet gah!)

hi all small update.  here's the completed board pieces with the completed-ish walls. I ran out of gas for detailing the walls so in the interests in maintaining forward momentum I gave them a quick paint job and moved on:)

I really like the simple mechanic in space crusade where the laying out of the boards creates larger rooms at the edges once the wall sections are down.  Also lines of sight can go across 2 boards which can create interesting lines of fire (or higher risk movement) for all players

I've received some additional figures so i now have enough to field a full set of imperials against my cobbled together rebels.

Next challenges are casting up enough doors ( I need 24) and then on the cards AND THEN it's game on!

This is a cool project.

I don't know the detail of the original games you are basing this off - so this question might be a bit naive. Up until the last picture (with the 3d walls) I was thinking the white lines and darker grey floors represented walls separating rooms / corridors. But then the 3d walls seem to cut across this. But you also mention 24 doors, so will there be more walls?

Hey Fred.

I put the white lines in to try and differentiate the corridors from the rooms.  The rooms have a (apparently too thin) black line around them with a 2 square break.  The doors go there.

So most of the walls are just black lines except the dividing 3d ones. I have no idea why they did it this way but it looks cool and is visually more interesting.  My walls are rather plain which reduces this effect ha ha :)

At the start of the game all the doors are in place and at some stage blip tokens are placed in whatever board the rebel (space marine) player is in.  Then it becomes a bit of a dungeon crawl/ aliens thing where blip tokens are revealed when the player enters a room.

I'll post a mock up of the game soonish cheers!
