Title: Chillcon - last weekend
Post by: Annie on March 27, 2025, 05:43:26 PM
I visited Chillcon last weekend in a "chill" capacity, ie not as a trader, and had a really good time.

There was so much to do, you could easily make a day of it (I did) and it was very friendly.

The talks were an interesting addition - obviously the Historical Wargaming with Women talk was excellent (I did that one - thank you everyone who showed up! I'm blown away by how full it was) and the others seemed to go down great too. I'd totally go back again to do another talk, I didn't get a chance to see any others as I needed foooood.

The only downer was queues for food, but the food is AMAZING. I don't know how easy other food options would be, I might bring an emergency packed lunch next time, or eat at an "off peak" time.

Painting competition was brilliant standards, I entered in some silly things to make people smile, like my gaslands guinea pig wagon, and tree pen. The only mini you can fill in it's entry form with.... itself.

Vikings, cosplayers etc always add some interest!

Speed Painting and now Speed Kitbashing are really fun and get some energy going. Hobby clinic! I saw a seperate painting tutorial was going on, I don't know much about it but that's a nice addition. Just lots of nice additions really.

Coffee and Tea for a quid is a nice change from the places where they have their own catering and it's pretty expensive, so that kept spending down.

Posting because I don't get to shows as a punter very often, so I wanted to say hey I had a great time, and I'd totally recommend it.

It's one of the newer shows, though it's been going I think 8 years now, so it's great to see something work, as events can be mega hard to get going, and stay going.

I left with a "what a lovely day" feeling, and chatted to some excellent folk.

I'm sorry I couldn't get along to it, but there was a clash with a wargaming/roleplaying event at Nottingham Trent University and I could get to that one in under ten minutes!

Glad to hear it went well though, I've been once before in Derby and it was a good time chatting with some people putting on club games, meeting up with a few people, picking up some books, and I remember there being a pretty decent food truck.

Thanks for sharing, it sounds really nice. I'd like to attend a show sometime, but they don't seem to have them where I live. Maybe next time I'm back in the UK.

Other than the historical talk you did, do people ever make historic booths for the purpose of education?

I didn't see it advertised here. I might have gone to it.

we went along for a visit, car park was crammed when we arrived.
huge queues for the food stalls so we just settled for tea/coffee and crisps. would agree ?1 for teas was good.

small selection of traders, including some you don't often see, plus a bring and buy.

a few demo/participation games.

a sort of boardgame library where you could sit and relax with a game (although tables and chairs were at a premium).

will probably go again next year
