Title: Looking for rules for 1866-71 Small games
Post by: Field Marshal on March 30, 2025, 11:11:37 AM
Hey there. I am keen to build some forces for the 1866 -1871 period in Europe. I want to run games where a brigade is about the most a player would use, maybe a division for multiplayer. I want to run small scenarios that can be part of bigger battles. Something like General De Brigade but for the post 1850 period any suggestions?

I've been looking for a ruleset for this period where a company is the basic tactical unit, focused on regiment to brigade level. Seems to be under-served at the moment. Will follow with interest to see if anyone has any suggestions!

"They Died for Glory" by Dave Waxtel & Robert Burke are excellent.

Nominally units are Battalions and you play at Brigade level but the rules work equally well stating a unit is the regiment (3 battalions) and playing at Divisional level. They have a very good feel for the period and as befits a game of linear tactics vs modern weapons they are bloody.

I'm not familiar with it personally so this doesn't constitute a recommendation, but Partizan Press publishes a set for this period using the General de Brigade system, by the name of There Are Your Guns!, which may be worth investigating.
