Title: Recommend Some Artillery
Post by: Operator5 on December 09, 2009, 10:30:04 PM
I want to get an artillery piece or two for my Africa gaming. I'd like something that could be fielded by a number of different forces if such a beast exists. Was there an artillery piece that everyone fighting there just seemed to have?

Mountain guns seem popular and one of my favourites for late in the period the Maxim Pompom

I think the Foundry Mountain Gun is a good choice. It's crewed by Askari (which real ones generally weren't), but if you can see past that then it is damn useful due to the very fact that the crew are rather generic. Can be used by explorers and colonial expeditions of whatever nationality you choose, and rebelling natives might just be able to lay their hands on one too if they are lucky.

I guess a Krupp gun would also be ok...

Just what I was going to say.

Used by Egyptians and Mahdists (not to mention many other countries) and very easy to imagine a wealthy entrepreneurial "native" commander acquiring one. Maybe the sort of thing the Prussians would use as a "sweetener" to get a foothold in a country.

Possibly you could also use an old Napoleonic gribeauval system gun as it's just about possible one would find it's way there, or maybe a Civil War Napoleon/Parrot etc? It depends how "historical" you want your Africa to be.

I know I use all the above for my "native" forces. My Mahdists have a big old smoothbore 32 pdr ( I think) which I picked up cheap on e-bay  :D

Here is Foundry's Zanzibari gun, which is also multi-useful for the non-european opponents.

Askari Miniatures has a couple of artillery pieces and they sell them without crew.
The Krupp Mountain gun is a good choice. The Chris Peers armylists usually list the guns that fit the armies.

I really like that Krupp mountain gun in Askari's guide and the limber set will be very useful for my 77mm Krupps :-*

Thanks for posting, Mike!
