Title: Wargames Atlantic Zombies
Post by: Ultravanillasmurf on April 21, 2025, 02:55:44 PM
I picked up a box of Wargames Atlantic Zombies at Salute.

There are five sprues, each sprue has six bodies and apparently 75 d8fferent heads.

The problem is the style is very odd. They have a distinctly cartoony look. They also seem to be wearing carapace armour.

Not sure if they fit with any other figures as Zombies.

Oathmark Revenant, zombie and Baron's War Knight.

I think they look a bit like the ghosts from Hilda.

Now you say it... I definitely can't stop seeing that.

Looking at the sprues and assembled pics on the Wargames Atlantic website more closely, I think the big issue for a lot of them might just be that the "non-descript rags" are so non-descript that they don't sell any of the heads. Ripped tee-shirt and shorts with a shako do not a 'zombie Napoleonic soldier' make. Ditto for WW2 or any of the others they are trying to represent. The presentation as a whole kinda puts me to mind of a undead 'fancy dress' party...

Granted the ability to use the thematic components to convert normal figures of a given type into zombies is a reasonable proposition, but not sure it works in practice (or, atleast works any better than simply mixing say the Mantic KOW zombies)

You guys are weird. I had no idea what the Hilda thing was - I had to look it up! Now I wish I hadn't.

I have to echo the above sentiment - they seem a bit TOO generic - to the point that they could really have just been nude. they're so period non specific that for me they pass through "torn up zombie" and and up in "drunk fighting his way out of a binbag" territory.

The mantic zombies still remain unbeaten in terms of good value generic undead IMHO.

Yeah, I think they were trying too hard to get just one set of zombies that would cover all of the periods they do. Should've done at least a couple of more specific sets.

honestly with how they did the kit, it's really more of a conversion kit, where you add the heads and arms to bodies from whatever historical, scifi, or fantasy kit you want. the actual bodies are almost superfluous. personally i think they over did it with the heads, that they could have reduced the number of each type by almost half, fitted in an extra generic head and a couple types they dropped, and several more bodies and spare arms. letting each kit build a bigger horde, and provide more parts for conversions. (instead of 30 figures per box, mine would have been 40.. with 260 heads of 77 different types. you'd just only get 3 of each type per sprue aside from the generic (which got 8 ) )

as far as the bodies.. yeah they're painfully generic. and i think that is supposed to be the rotten rags of a shirt and pants. it's just not really sculpted well.

up in "drunk fighting his way out of a binbag" territory.
Now that is an idea.

Your paintjob is certainly doing some heavy lifting in making these look nice!
A shame the kit is a bit of a dud, but at least your ghostly paint scheme works well for them :)
