Title: AWI Project, British Combined Light Infantry
Post by: carojon on May 16, 2025, 10:27:59 PM
With a very important 250th anniversary coming up next year my focus has shifted to picking up work with my AWI collection commenced a few years ago, that sees me currently adding various command groups and new skirmish elements to facilitate big-battle games.

Once these adjustments to the current collection are completed I will be adding brand new additions to the collection going forward.

Carojon, lovely work. I too am looking to revitalise my AWI "project". My mate and I planned 10mm using "Live Free or Die" but have decided for the moment to stick to our existing 28mm. We can use Sharp Practice for "small battles" but don't yet have a set of rules we are happy with for "big battles". Any recommendations?

Hi Chaps,
Thanks for your comments, and aren’t we showing our age as I too have been flicking through my bicentennial copy of Redcoat from 1976, produced by Empire and Scotty Bowden, that I picked up back then. How the years condemn!

SJWi - I’m always cautious recommending rule sets as I tend to agree with Richard Clarke, when he remarked ‘rules are like shoe sizes, just because I prefer a size 10 and you a size 8 doesn’t make either of us wrong’.

As mentioned in the post I’m looking at using the Perfect Captain for my skirmish games and Rise and Fight Again from Stand To Games plus Carnage & Glory for my big battle set ups, both very familiar mechanisms, and both sets in their distinctive ways very geared towards fatigue rather than casualties and figure removal to simulate combat disruption; a factor dear to my heart as I enjoy painting these creations so I’m keen to keep them on the table during a game, and much prefer to sprinkle casualty figures around instead.

I hope that is helpful

JJ

I remember during the 200th Celebrations a guest, the late Queen Elizabeth II , made a speech.
During which she said, ' We are gathered here to celebrate events that MAY (my emphasis) not be reversible'

Got to admire the British Royal Family, two centuries after losing (to BRITISH colonists) still thinking the 'Yanks' might change their minds.  lol lol lol

Carojon, thanks for the rules advice. "Rise and Fight Again" look quite interesting. I hadn't heard of them before and to be honest, without a personal recommendation I would have been loathe to spend £25 on an unknown set of rules. I also read some positive blog posts. My mate likes "Loose Files and American Scramble" by Andy Callan which I think were published in the first ever Wargames Illustrated. They are OK , but maybe too abstracted.
