Title: 16th century Irish
Post by: Phillius on 17 May 2025, 05:27:40 AM
I am sure that I remember seeing a manufacturer advertising figures for Irish troops of the later 16th century.

I am beginning to become interested in that period as a skirmish/small unit style of game.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer that carries Irish with culverins or arquebus from that period?

A list of manufacturers someone put together on TMP:

Two others are mentioned in the comments below the list.

Flags of War (https://www.flagsofwar.com/collections/miniatures/products/fow-bw13-border-wars-fighting-irish-set) have a few 16th century Irishmen in their Border Wars range. No long firearms though.

I can't get the link to TMP to open, so apologies if they're already mentioned, but Antediluvian Miniatures do some really nice Irish figures.

Khurasan will do you in 15mm.

Thanks for the direction folks.

I need figures to be 25mm minimum, anything smaller is too much for my eyes these days.

Perhaps I was wrong, maybe there isn't a specific range for this period. I have the Ian Heath book on Armies of the 16th Century, perhaps I need to find a digital designer for myself?

In 28mm I have only seen 14/15th century figures from Antediluvian and Perry Miniatures, albeit I'm sure these work for early 16th century. I don'y know enough about the late 16th century to see any of these work for then? The only other ranges of Irish I know are for "Montrose in Scotland" during the ECW and these are probably too late.

Maybe a mash-up of Wargames Atlantic's Dark Age Irish (some of the bodies, heads, capes etc) with their Conquistadors (helmets, firearms)? Won't be perfect but beggars can't be choosers. You probably won't need a large number of firearm equipped Irish anyway.

The links mentioned above for those that can't open the TMP page:

https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product-category/metal-ranges/war-of-the-roses/page/2/

bottom of page are Irish troops

https://antediluvianminiatures.wordpress.com/2025/03/22/shop-historical-range/

A few Irish and Scottish Gallowglass types scattered on the page

There were some links to Scottish borderers who likely served in the Irish wars and some earlier Irish and Pictish units but these aren't really relevant to 16th century Irish or Gallowglass.

I made an Irish arquebusier in English service using the static standing body from the GB DA Irish set, and arquebus-equipped arms and morion-helmeted head from the WA Conquistadores set. I can't recall where the cloak originated; either the GB Picts set or Fireforge medieval knights, but either should work fine.

I'll second the mention of Perry miniatures- they do a good few metal Irish in their Wars of the Roses line- if you want plastics though, I can't think of anything.

I completed a project for 28mm Elizabethan Ireland about a year ago, there are lots of figures you can use, Perrys, Crusader, Antideluvian, Foundry, Redoubt, some work required to add more up to date muskets and add in the odd Morion helmet but the basics for Kern and Gallowglass all there. Maybe check out some of those I had on my blog here:

click on the label for Elizabethan.

RogerC - well that's really inspiring stuff, I will have a look at those manufacturers. I may have to develop better modelling skills, but your game looked terrific and inspiring.

Cheers

Phil

Many thanks Phillius, some swaps were pretty simple, others less so.

A head swap for a Morion helmet and an open hand taking an arquibus are simple adds. Best of luck.
