Title: The Dragon from Willow
Post by: snitcythedog on 02 June 2025, 04:42:26 PM
Another 3dprint from Etsy this time from Twisted Pinnacle 3D.  It turned out to be much bigger than I expected.  It came in seven pieces.  A filament printed body with resin printed legs, necks and heads.  Here are the parts that came in.

I always had a soft spot for the design of this monster as the heads reminded me of parakeets.  My only gripe with the print was the small feet on the body.  It looks like the STL file does not give adequate surface contact between the toes and the body.  I had to trim carefully to make sure they did not come off.
Here are the painted pictures.

Painted this way it seems like having flat caps :)
Nice piece of beast though, I like the natural colour scheme, could easily imagine it as a scifi monster too!

This is great! That scene was one that I found a bit scary when I was a kid. Was it my misinterpretation or did the dragon grow from the magically melted troll guts?

A bizarre, but undoubtedly useful mini on the table. First time I've seen an amalgam model of two printing techniques. Any problems getting them to stick together, alignment issues etc? At any rate; great paintjob too!

Also: Ni!

Thank you all for the kind words.

Not really.  I made sure to wash everything well with Fairy before I assembled it.

As I recall it was when he tried to use the wand.

That's a beauty for sure! Love the dragon, so much character. The paint work is excellent and really captures the amphibian vibe quite realistically, strong work!

always felt very Gillingham-esque to me... more so now seeing it's little legs...

Yeah, he used the wand to kill one of the apelike trolls, which seemed to turn it inside out into a bloody mess, then two little heads started to push out and it grew into this monstrosity.

Fantastic paint job on this dragon, that I totally forgot about!

And what is that thing at its foot?  Spaceballs? Shit...there goes the planet...

That was my first thought -straight from the pen of Terry Gillingham.
Great work! Love the mottled shift from green to ochre.

Terry Gillingham? Never 'eard o' the bloke.  lol

Terry Gilliam, on the other hand, I have heard of (and seen his work) - it is a bit Gilliamesque, isn't it! Apparently, though, the designers at ILM used a discarded Star Wars creature idea by Ralph McQuarrie for the 'Eborsisk'.

Great looking dragon. You have done it proud with a fantastic paint job. Funnily, I only just recently rewatched the movie, so this was lovely to see.

The dragon looks awesome!  Great paint job and print.
I don't think you see much, if any of the body of the dragon in the movie, so I'm not sure how stubby the legs ought to be.  Artistic license taken, I'm sure.

Have you ever noticed how much the heads of the dragon resemble the head of the Rancor Beast?  Maybe the same practical effects artist(s) from both movies?

 lol
Both designed by Ralph McQuarrie for Star Wars; Rancor was used but this one was discarded then re-used by the Willow team.
