I was convinced to finally buy the new Saga ruleset to have some fun in the ancient world. 300 was a cool movie and Spartans were an appealing choice. I find the historic warriors less attractive than the idea of having those movie heroes on the gaming table, but I found out that there are even better options which suit my painting preferences much more.
Here come the first few - 1 point of (admittedly fantasy) Spartan veterans for Saga:

I will need fatigue markers and scratchbuilt those. I press-moulded the shields with Blue Stuff and Green Stuff and added plastic helmets from the Victrix helmet set. Each helmet represents one point of fatigue.

Very properly “Spartan” :o I can relate to finding these slightly more interesting than hairy men, and the Siren’s call may work in your favor on more than one occasion lol
But seriously nice job ! Lovely brushwork. Would love to see the rest of the crew when done. Nice hobbying on the fatigue markers. What’s up next ? Cheers

Well played (and painted) Michi, if somewhat more fantasy than history. I think Brother Vinni makes other women hoplites like these if you're seeking to expand your lochoi. Also Casting Room Mini's have several different packs of 'War Maiden's' but are of a somewhat different style to yours.

Beautiful models and paint job. Who makes these minis?

Thanks a lot for your kind comments and appreciation, :)

A few more veterans are under my brush right now. I learned that there was no difference in battle between aristoi and other free citizens of Sparta due to the life long martial training and both fought side by side in the same lochos of the phalanx, however the SAGA rules know a difference between warriors and veterans. Two more points of veterans (8 models) will be painted.

Yes, that's what made me start this project. I painted a commission of his hoplites in the past and was since thinking of buying some for myself (but found no reason until now). https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=140333.msg1788117#msg1788117

From left to right;
Hasslefree Artemis 28mm (metal), El viejo Dragon 1/43rd scale "Little Dragonettes" hoplite girl (metal), Hasslefree 40mm (resin), El viejo Dragon 1/43rd scale "Little Dragonettes" hoplite girl (metal) - bases are 20mm in diameter

Excellent skin tones ;D, have you seen the Shadowforge / eureka ones Michi?
Have a look and I can pick them up in January when I am in Australia.
Cheers

Here come four more veterans (or 1 point) for my ancient Saga army. Two of the models are identical metal casts by El Viejo Dragon. The other two are the first of my Brother Vinni resin casts for this project. I prefer their proportions and Brother Vinni's sculpting style. These casts are really flawless and easy to clean and assemble. I like them very much! :-*

Although she looks more like some mythological Greek hero than a hoplite with the decapitated Gorgon's head, I'll allow her to join the Phalanx, too... :D

The next point of veterans for ancient Saga is complete.
I plan to let them stand in for leaders of the four coming bands of warriors too. The idea is to identify the warriors by the coulours of their helmet bushes.

"Can't you see what you are fighting against? Take a closer look at the helmet bush of this unit!"
Opponents will be like lol

I would just like to put on record the enormous amount of self-restraint it took not to make a rather obvious joke here.

They're called pubes...
'ang on, bleedin' predictive text, plumes!
:o

They're called ... plumes!
Please forgive my lack of precise nomenclature. I googled "Helmbusch" and didn't get ... plume
However, even as a non-native speaker I can see what this confusion is about. Sorry for that! :D

Now I've finished three markers worth 2 points of fatigue each. One helmet still stands for 1 point, the rest is "marker dressing". The models are metal casts by El viejo Dragon.
