Title: Great Northern War ranges 28mm
Post by: Redshank on July 03, 2025, 09:41:41 PM
I'm considering a new project of GNW in 28mm.

There are a number of great-looking figure ranges. I have got my eye particularly on Warfare Miniatures (League of Augsburg), Ebor, and possibly Avanpost although (ironically enough) postage might be an issue there, as they are in Germany and I am in UK.

I had a look for comment online about compatibility between these ranges, but all I could find was a bit dated (2013), and I suppose sculpts/ranges might have moved on. FWIW, people seemed to think Warfare and Ebor were pretty much compatible back then.

Has anybody got a view on compatibility as it stands now? Including Avanpost if anyone has any knowledge there.

I use ebor, Foundry, OG and Wee Wolf together without any second thoughts. It seems there are no giants or dwarfs in the GNW universe  :)

I had a Russian army for the GNW but ended up transferring it to a friend.  These photos are from 2019, so more recent than 2013 but still not completely current.

I used Ebor and Warfare Miniatures, plus Warlord Games WSS infantry to bulk out the numbers.  I also found a Peter the Great figure from Reiver Miniatures, but he is noticeably bulkier than the other figures.

I got some resin figures from Kordegardia in Russia which appear to be the same as the Avanpost ones.  The resin is extremely delicate.  The models would be nice for a static display but are far too brittle for regular handling.

Here is the Reiver Peter the Great between an Ebor Dragoon and a Warlord Games WSS mounted officer.

Here is PtG between a couple of Ebors (one on foot, one mounted)

And this is probably what you are looking for, the comparison shot with L-R Wargames Factory/Warlord Games WSS plastic infantry, Warfare Miniatures, Ebor (dragoon) and Ebor (grenadier)

Question very much answered, cheers lads.

If anything you want Peter to be a bit disproportionate given he was 6'8"!

Great intel on the Avanpost too. Shame as they are very nice looking.

No worries,

Let me know if you need any help on GNW info. It is a big topic here in Sweden  :)

...there is a printed range on eBay, too- they looked quite good. Some of the faces look a bit similar but I think I heard that separate heads are available.

Yes I also noticed the War Bear ones. They also look really nice.

They are very pretty, and scale nicely with Warfare and Warlord.  It's worth asking Avanpost directly if they can confirm or deny my claims, don't just trust some rando's post on an internet forum!

And so it begins...

I've got 3 Helion books - the ones on the Swedish and Russian armies, and the "wargamer's guide".

Grateful for any suggestions on further reading. I seem to have caught the bug.

Those books should give you a good start. In Swedish language there is a whole world of literature on the GNW but not so much in English I am afraid. However, the best account on Poltava that I have read is the book by Peter Englund. Fortunately it is translated into a number of languages. In English it is called "The Battle that shook Europe: Poltava and the Birth of the Russian Empire" - it is one of the best military books I have read. It will give you a life-long bug  ;)

The Rest is History podcast recently completed a 7-part series on Peter the Great including the GNW.  Nice to play in the background as you are painting your figures!

Very nice - thanks guys

Any suggestions on rules? I know Beneath the Lily Banner covers it. Any other good options out there?

I use Osprey Pikemans Lament. A bit smaller scale but a great set of rules

I use Warfare Miniatures and Ebor, lovely figures, for the Swedes and Russians. There are some good books by Helion, including "Waking the Bear" get them and I bet you end up with some converted Perry sleighs and probably a Minifigs Drum cart! We use the Beneath The Lilly Banners rules.

At some point I shall get some pictures up on "Tales from the Wargames Shed" when the chaps come out for a game, but I think if you look at imagery from early this year there are plenty of images.

Interesting. We have had some success using Men Who Would Be Kings for bigger battles like Isandlwana - maybe something similar can be done here.

I bought Ga Pa (please excuse spelling) from Lulu for a very reasonable price, so will be giving that a look.

Just checking the Wargames Foundry range - the cloaked Swedes are a nice variation.

Warlord Games has a supplement for Black Powder called Last Argument of Kings which includes a number of rules amendments to introduce more of an 18th-century feel for the armies involved.  One of the chapters is on the GNW.

Daniel Mersey made both rulesets (together with the Swede Michael Leck for PL) so you will see that the mechanics are more or less the same

A few images of my chaps.

Very impressive. This is truly inspirational.

Thanks to all for comments and suggestions on rules, too.

Got a sample of War Bear 28mm 3D printed chaps arriving today. Excitement is building!

Not a very good shot of my samples... Left to right: Ebor (without pike), War Bear, Warfare/LoA, another War Bear (head perched on, not glued yet)

War Bear are more like 32mm vs 28mm for Ebor/Warfare. I'm hoping the commercial printer can shave 10% off the War Bear prints size, and then I reckon they would be a perfect fit.

Look forward to seeing the results.

I have Ebor, Warfare and Foundry with a small number of WeeWolf.

Ebor and Foundry are surprisingly compatible and Warfare dont look particularly out of place. Wee wolf are bigger but they have mixed in ok.

Examples of how the fit together on my blog, good example here: https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2019/09/swedish-savolax-infantry-battalion.html

Big Jim Prints has said he can print the War Bear stuff at "true" 28mm. I have another sample on the way.

He also has a broader range than the eBay fellow I found earlier, including the excellent-looking casualty figures.
