Title: [Argad] Rebellion against FRW conscription, Brittany 1793
Post by: Patrice on July 08, 2025, 05:28:40 PM
A game played last Sunday in Pontivy castle (Brittany).

The scenario was inspired by real events which happened near this town in 1793 during the French Revolution when the peasants revolted against conscription (precise details and topography are imaginary). Ruleset: Argad.

AAR in French with many pictures.

Great looking table, lots of details! It seems like conscripting people could be a hazardous occupation for government agents. Possibly one of the reasons British recruiters during that period plied potential “volunteers” with alcohol or commuted prison sentences.  ;)

Yes that was also the case under the French monarchy in the 18th century. In revolutionary France in 1793 however it was different, compulsory conscription was a very new thing. The Breton peasants, who at first were in favour of the new ideas (they had risen one century before in 1675 against king Louis XIV's taxes and had been heavily punished) went very unhappy because of compulsory conscription (which meant they would be sent to fight on the Rhine or whatever place they didn't know where it was) and also by new laws against the clergy and they had a long historical rivalry vs small towns citizens who were mostly Republicans etc.
