Title: Caravan to Fort Marengo
Post by: has.been on July 13, 2025, 08:58:18 AM
Looking out over the red dusty plateau, the lookouts atop fort Marengo could make out the four huge beasts of burden.
Their progress was painfully slow. Not surprising considering their massive loads.
The trade caravan was expected, in fact it was overdue.
The French garrison, however, were not expecting an ambush by the Red Martians.
The Red Martians certainly did not expect a Green Martian raiding party!

The scene is set, dear readers, for today's game.

White Martians. Bob (aka Flatpack) Four beasts of burden & seven characters (including JC, which might be John Carter, or our departed friend John Cunningham)
Red Martians. James (aka Vodkafan) Seven troopers.
Green Martians Pete D.  Eight juveniles (aka thugs)

Objectives.
Whites =  Get the trade goods to the French at the fort.
Reds    =  Stop the Whites while avoiding a war with the French
Greens = KILL !!!!  This is a punishment raid.

Fort Marengo.

One of the 'smaller'  ones.  JC named them, 'Straw, Sticks & Bricks' after the three little pigs in the fairy tale.

A good shot from the Greens manages to bring down Big Bad. I had given that one TEN wounds, but if you hit a vital spot... :o

The caravan, missing some bits, gets to the safety of the French.
The landing pad & airship, are the work of Bob (aka Flatpack) I should have taken more pictures of them & hope the others did.

The Barsoom collection was an idea I had when Hinchcliffe first did the figures & I was about eleven. Recently the figures have
started to become available again, so despite the project taking about 58 years, the actual painting of figures is during the last fortnight. :D
We played under Galactic Heroes Rules.

Much fun was had. I will leave it to the players to add their comments, viewa & hopefully pictures.
Though I must mention some points.
Frequent complaints about how badly Reds fight.
Tears when Big Bad keeled over, especially from the herder he keeled onto.  :o
Green disbelief over White card draws & dice scores and
JC's magic underpants.  lol

They were from a friend, now sadly passed, & were some kind of Warhammer Orc cavalry (the three 'smaller' ones) and
the larger originally had a huge howdah on its back that took an awful lot of sawing off.
All were then given lots of baggage.

Thanks! Just thanks!

Our JC was Jason Carson, so he must have many aliases...

And, I just don't have the capacity to 'lift one' for each friend that has passed recently, so I will add yours to the list I think of next time.

Black Orc Warbeasts (with rider) and/or Lesser Goblin Wartowers (with a shack on top full of goblins - these are the ones I have).  Available still from Scotia Grendel.

Cheers DalyDR. They do look nice, so if anyone wants to have similar they know where to get the beasts. :)

I ran the white Martians, and their baggage train.
Hoping to get all 4 beasts into the French camp.

Initial layout, showing the beasts of burden baggage train, and the French base, composing of the old Prussian tower, and the newly constructed landing platform.
(https://i.postimg.cc/hv5CPBMv/IMG-0857.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Pv1b20gn)

Beasts going through the purple forest.
(https://i.postimg.cc/R0Bg0G17/IMG-0858.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xX6vxv48)

Heading home safely, no baddies in sight.
(https://i.postimg.cc/jdB8pRLk/IMG-0859.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hfbbxW89)

Hold on!
Some green on white action.
Green Martians attacking my white Martians, looking after the baggage train.
(https://i.postimg.cc/BnDhsRFZ/IMG-0861.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/fVz7f251)

Now some red on white action, as the baggage train approaches the safety of the camp.
Red Martians attacking the baggage train.
Nice to see JC in his bullet proof pants on the left of the photo.
You name it, he’s got pants for all occasions  lol lol
(https://i.postimg.cc/c4v9kv4n/IMG-0862.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/CzVszL8h)

First beast of burden enters the camp.
(https://i.postimg.cc/43QBHtwr/IMG-0863.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hJh9HXkr)
Don’t know how we will ever get the beasts onto the flying machine ?  lol

The French troops, guarding the base, finally come out to help the baggage train.
“Nice to see you gents !”
(https://i.postimg.cc/C1MJG1Qd/IMG-0865.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Mc4yxWx8)

JC directing French troops…in his pants.
(https://i.postimg.cc/26HG2DsG/IMG-0867.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/7G2SZpYJ)

So the white Martians arrived in the French camp, with 3 out of the 4 beasts.
One was taken out by the green Martians along the way.

A really fun game, as always played in the right spirit.

Amazing stuff - looks like a really fun game. I’m only just getting into ERB’s John Carter stories (massive 50hr audiobook being devoured) and I’m really enjoying them. I had a couple of those scotia Grendel beasts when little and they repeatedly got shoehorned into as many games and settings as I could  :D

The beasts are the worry of the handlers. As the goal was 'to the fort,' I assumed most of the goods would be stored there, safe, as the Prussians, the former tenants used to say.  ;)

Hard to imagine the flyer actually taking off with that load.

Begs the question: does it actually take off? The model, of course.

The 'air-force' is the property & work of Bob (aka Flatpack)
Both landing pad & air-craft are very nice up close.

As to the beasts, I was surprised the handlers didn't let them lose on the Reds or Greens.
There was a rule that if they felled an opponent they would EAT them  :o :o :o
All the victims comrades would instantly take a point of shock.  :D

Love it! IP theft in progress...

Mind, good tradesmen would work hard to keep the stock, both beasts and wares, moving to safety.

I hope you enjoyed the game though. :)
