These are a few of why AAR pictures from our replay of Königgrätz two months ago. Terrain and some of the figures were works in progress. We will be replaying this battle again in August with real Saxons instead of proxies and I hope better terrain. Table is 8' x 5' and rules were Bloody Big
The battlefield from the south at 0800 as the Prussian 1st Army advances onto the battlefield.
-
At 0900 the Austrians decided to advance their III and IV Corps to meet the Prussian 1st Army while the two reserve corps (I and VI) replaced them in the trench line.
-
At 1000 the 2nd Army begins to arrive in the north while the Prussian Elbe Army crosses the Bistritz Stream to press the Austrian southern flank.
-
The Prussian 2nd Army begins to press against the Austrian northern flank with the 1st Army presses toward Chlum. The Elbe Army continues to flank in the south.
-
Two Prussian and four Austrian corps fight for Chlom while the 2nd Army now only faces one Austrian cops.
-
At 14000 the Elbe Army is making slow progress against the Saxons and the VIII Corps.
-
With the Austrian reserves committed too early in the battle, the Austrians are forced to split the II Corps between the Prussian Guards the bulk of the 2nd Army.
-
With the Austrian IV Cps broken and the VI Corps pressed back, the Prussian 1st Army is mastering the Austrian center. The Guards break half of the Austrian II Corps, leaving only a few Austrian brigades between the Prussian 2nd Army and the Austrian line of retreat.
-
An attempt to turn the south flank of the Prussian 1st Army by the Austrian X Corps at 1700 is too little too late as more Austrian units in the center collapse and begin to retreat. The Saxons and the VIII Corps have held off the Elbe Army leaving the southern retreat routes open for the Austrian Army. The retreat of the Austrian VI Corps now places the I, III, and X Corps in danger of being cut off. The II Corps is in poor shape as the 2nd Army prepares to attack. At this point we called the game.

Great AAR. Konnigratz is one of those battles I've always wanted to game. 6mm is an ideal miniature size for the armies involved. I have BBB but have yet to play them. Looks like it was a blast.

What armies do you have? My crew played most of the FPW scenarios some years back.
Kuropatkin, great AAR, thank you.

Yes the game was quite fun. We had seven players, so it really was an army-level game. The BBB rules work well for a big battle in a reasonable length of time. Most of the players were new to the rules, but quickly picked up on the mechanisms. I had started with a Fire & Fury modification, but those rules really didn't scale well for battles of this size.
I now have the Saxon units painted and ready for the refight.

Very nice!

Brilliant stuff! Nothing wrong with WIP stuff on your gaming table (it’s not a display after all and I find the playing helps motivate the painting), your paint jobs look great.
