Hey Guys,
The ancients players in my group are finally sucking me into the dark hole. Among them they have every army imaginable for ancient and dark-medieval ages, but as a true wargamer I must have my own figures. So...
I am looking at putting together the following 15mm armies...
Migration Era Alans
Old Saxons
Early Vandals
Alemanni
Later Visigoths
The guys who own Thistle & Rose are part of the group I game with and I like their figures, so T&R will form much of my Old Saxon and Alemanni armies. Beyond that, what are your thoughts and suggestions regarding best figure options.
Thanks in advance.
Bill

Hello,
Madaxeman has a quite complete list of 15mm suppliers that may help you: https://www.madaxeman.com/main/15mm_ancients_suppliers.php (https://www.madaxeman.com/main/15mm_ancients_suppliers.php)

Thanks blacksmith,
I follow madaxeman's posts and have been to his site (excellent source). Hoping to get some thoughts from fellow gamers who have built these particular armies.

For the Visigoths and Vandals (and Romans of all varieties), I like the Old Glory 15s:

For western migrating Alans, they look like Sarmatians on unarmoured horses, and the OG range would cover them nicely. (Hmm, that could be a nice addition to my DBA collection for this period after I finish getting a pair of Gepid armies table ready...)

DBA army lists describe the optional Alan foot troops as peasant axemen, if I build this army I think I would go with Dacian falxmen and swap in two-handed axes.

Thanks Cat.
(good to hear from you)

For Old Saxons, Early Vandals, Alemanni try Donnington Old Era at Ancient & Modern. I have a lot of them and think they are nice.

Thanks for the input guys.

Okay LAF gang,
What is the consenus about using certain Sarmation mounted troops as Alans?
Thx

Given that the Alans were a sub-set of the Sarmatian cultural group, you’re probably fine mixing some of the figures. It would be more a matter of trying to keep the figures within roughly the same time period. The Sarmatians enter the western historical record earlier (possibly as early as 450bce if the Sauromatae mentioned in Herodotus are the forerunners), and some technology did change in the following 800-900 years. Sarmatians heavy cavalry using armoured horses and wearing riveted helmets probably looked pretty much the same as Alans during that middle period where the Alans started attracting the notice of Roman generals on the eastern frontier.
-
Thanks Pattus Magnus, the heavy cavalry is actually what we were discussing amongst our group.
-
LAF, will someone please ID the maker of these figs? Thanks

They feel like Essex.

The guys on camels are Essex, MOA9 Mongol: Command: Camel Drummer & Camel Standard Bearer.
-
Well, that was fast. Thanks guys

LAF is an amazing resource for miniatures identification. Occasionally something will stump everyone, but not often, and a lot of folks here enjoy sharing information. And the picture of painted figures are inspiring, too!

So...
I am gathering up Thistle & Rose for my early Franks.
I have gathered some Baueda for my Alamanni and will flesh them out with T&R and others.
I have some Baueda figures to build around for my Merovingian Franks and Alans.
I'm looking for recommendations for other Alans that will work well with the Baueda figures, particularly Alan mounted bow.
Huns or Turkomens or Mongols will likely come later.
Thanks in advance.
