Title: Innsmouth scenery
Post by: Schrumpfkopf on 15 August 2025, 10:43:23 PM
Hi everybody,

I am planning to start an Innsmouth board - possibly a harbour, and I was wondering if any of you have some leads what a fishing port in the 1920s might’ve looked like, and what terrain features I should look for.

Thanks for your help!

I haven't come across a central repository of photos, but if you image search for specific fishing ports and "1920", you'll come up with a variety of helpful photos, postcards on EBay, and whatnot.

The primary fishing ports here in Massachusetts were New Bedford, Salem, and Beverly.  For Rhode Island there is Galilee, a village within the town of Naragansett.

The old run-down buildings in those cities now were relatively new and fancy in the 20s.  Between the ports, processing plants, and other mills, they were pretty bustling places.  Street trolleys for the major public transportation.

Boston & Maine railroad stations up here in Mass; Narragansett Pier Railroad Company specifically serving the industry down there.

If you want a smaller town look, Newburyport Mass had some very ramshackle clam shacks for the shellfish industry, and I'm sure the workers there would have frightened Mr. Lovecraft.

Sarissa/Crooked Dice have a range of MDF building under the Marshport name.

Those could certainly work for the scruffy end of a small town like Newburyport, but not for the bigger fishing ports.

The derelict versions look way out of place for the 1920s, a 1960s or later setting, yeah.

Crooked Dice also sells the Marshport MDF stuff. Good luck on your port and don't forget the warehouses.

Innsmouth is also pretty outdated by 1920, so you should look into Colonial-style homes for terrain. Old Glory Miniatures has brick buildings if you want to toss those in too.

I used a mix of the buildings mentioned above for my Innsmouth Build. Considering a beach / harbour area too so am following this thread with interest.

You *have* to take a look at the seminal work of one of the Grandees of LAF, Grimm.

Some of us have had the pleasure on his magnificent gameboards featuring Innsmouth

We have lots of MDF buildings we commissioned from Sarissa and resin scenics to support them
