Title: Finest texture flock?
Post by: Andrew May on August 31, 2025, 03:34:34 PM
I'm starting a 10mm fantasy project and I was wondering what the finest texture flock available for bases was? Traditional sawdust flock looks too large next to the minis, actual dust will be needed I suppose! LOL

Woodland Scenics “Fine Turf” is what you want.

I’m going to suggest Golden brand “coarse pumice gel”. It can be tinted or let to dry and then painted. I’ve used it on 6mm to good effect.

WWScenics sell 1mm basing static  grass which is great for 10mm bases. about £13 for 100g. I have just applied some to 30 x 40mm x 40mm bases and used less than 2g they also do 0.5mm static snow.

Thanks for the ideas - I tend to use standard flock or static grass, or smaller tuffs on my 10mm figures. Can't say I've ever felt it massively over sized. But can now look at some other options, and see if I need to redo all my basing ;)

The finest I know of is pigment powder - if you can find it, not that easy.  It is what is used to mix some paints among other things.   Also, not cheap!

Here is a nice set, but pricey:

Perhaps an easier to find option is to visit a model railroad shop and look at their weathering powders.  I'd start with a single container and experiment with it first - and see how it handles being sealed so as not to be a portable mess shedding problem.  Should be okay, commonly used in model railroading.

Just be aware it is truly fine and thus can make a real mess so handle with care.

This image gives a better sense of the color selection linked above:

Polishing pumice powder to be mixed with paint is the cheapest and easiest source. A pint carton from the hardware store will last you years and costs nearly nothing compared to premixed paints and specialized flocks from modeling/mini company labels.

If you want to make your own, MDF sanding dust is very fine and takes colour well. I used it (uncoloured) for the base layer of my 6mm Afrika Korps bases.

Thanks once ore for all the suggestions, I've picked up some samples.

In addition to your suggestions I can add the K&M Tree's flock is very fine too.
