Been trying out hemp rope for a thatched roof and have only just started the process so pictures to follow but good god the smell :-X
Its smells like a furking farming yard :o
Bought hemp before but in smaller quantities but never has it smelt like this. Apparently its the terpentines. Anyway its going on the washing line to get some air to it ;)

Perhaps you should not have bought a second-hand hemp rope from a gallows hangman... ::)
More seriously, they may have put something on it to prevent it from rotting if used outside for some time. Small factories in Europe probably do it properly but some of those made in Asia may be overloaded with cheap turpentine equivalents.

Better on the rope than in cheap alcohol I say :-[
Also it may kill the hemp fleas, our hemp store was riddled with them, pesky little blighters!

Well the hemp is well and truly stuck down with pva glue now so if any fleas they are stuck down to lol
