I am mulling over creating a Fullmetal Alchemist Skirmish scenario for use with the Savage worlds showdown rules. Anyhow, I was wondering if anybody knows some good bases to convert these uniforms from.
also the guns that go with those are based upon WWII bolt action German rifles, so any greatcoats that already come with something like that would be a big advantage.
I would be looking for something in the 25-30 mm range.
Oh and for those who are familiar with the show, I am currently contemplating what to use for bad guys, I try to stat away from named characters but state alchemists will be present. Anyhow, I think the ishbal war should make a good ‘setting’. I know the ishbal were supplied with weapons, including heavy machine guns, but they themselves would have inferior training, and no alchemists. Then again they should probably have priest leading them boosting morale.
Thanks in advance,
Tim.

Well, since nowadays you can get pretty much any plastic bits from specialised ebay sellers, I'd go with High elf archer legs and for the torso's I think I've seen some imperial guard types that had a similar look (like the center one here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WARHAMMER-40K-BITS-IG-CADIAN-COMMAND-7x-TORSO_W0QQitemZ360217627947QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item53dea4cd2b). Maybe you could contact one or more of them bits-sellers to ask about the unarmoured torsos.
-
I would probably have said something like WWI Russians.
If you were lucky you might even be able to find compatible figures in different scales, eg 20mm and 28mm, to represent the adults and juniors.
-
I think I know what IG torso you mean, but that’s one torso in a specialized kit, so it would be expansive to get a lot of them.
This might just be a good thing to sculpt myself, and then cast. The uniform itself has split lines along its shoulders and waist, making multi component a lot easier I think.
Oh and I am not trying to make that specific group, just grunts from the same army. (they wouldn’t have the shoulder rope thingy.)
It seems the guns used during the Isbal war were based on Lee Enfield’s, is there any company that sells them loose in 25-28 mm scale?

The Assault Group do packs of rifles..

Ooh, they seem to have pretty much every gun I need! Very useful and not to expansive.
-
what about this guy

-
the uniform looks rather like short jackets and open front long skirts..
don't know the show
I guess GW IG unarmoured torsos (from tank accessory sprue) with legs and make the skirts Yourself maybe thin styrene card? or lead sheet?
for bolt action rifles there are some 1/35 accessory sets that aren't too disproportionate
-
Your right, But I was thinking getting some WW1/2 minis would be the fastest way. I do have one of those torso’s lying around (or two even) but I wonder if I could get about 10 more for a decent price… Then again its not a vital component, you can go without it on a tank, so that works in my favor.

If you're looking to convert plastics wouldn't you be better starting with perhaps a Napoleonic torso ?
There are Napoleonic boxed sets that might be a cheaper source of basic bodies.
-
Ooh, I think your correct, especially sets that have lose heads and arms would make things a lot easier.I know next to nothing about Napoleonic uniforms so any pointers would be appreciated. The warlords miniatures range seems to have a lot of options. I will try to get a good screen capture of some uniforms.
Ooh, another thing, some soldiers seem to be wearing real greatcoats over their uniforms in desert colors during this war. I think some of the Napoleonic’s also have those coats on them?
-
the bit sellers do have such numbers, because they buy the boxes and break them up.
-
Your correct. Still, getting rid of all those cadian shoulder pads would be a pain. But it’s a viable option if the other uniforms turn out to be to ‘structured’ to sculpt over.
While browsing for better pictures of the uniform is discovered that I wont have much trouble getting some appropriate guns, the artist seems to throw in all sorts, from greasegun to Winchester. So that will be more a question of what rifles are cheapest and fit best with the miniatures I’ll use.
-
there are arms without shoulderpads
the question is rather how accurate You want to represent the uniforms and how many of them You need.
after all, french napoleonics with vest coat might be a good choice
-
Indeed there are, but those are all “commander” arms ie pointing etz. normal gun holding arms all have pads.
I think I am going to need 15-20 of them, tough I can always change my plants to fit the mini’s I can get.
-
there are also sentinel driver arms and tank crew arms without shoulderpads
but anyway, check availability and remember, even GW plastics are bulkier than historical miniatures :D
oh, yes - fantasy imperial militia arms might come useful too ;)

The Perry brothers have some Pictures of their French plastics :

Half the figures look to be in greatcoats, but they have muskets integral to the cast.
Victrix don't seem to have pictures, but a box of 60 figures for £19.95 is a good price :

Warlord games has both of those, and I think my local game store has had warlord boxes in the past, so perhaps I could order them trough him.
Actually, I was wondering of American civil war plastics from Perry miniatures wouldn’t be easier. I might just be falling for the color here, but perhaps not. My main problem with them is the pouch and its strap they have crossing their torso. It goes the wrong way, for my purposes. Anybody know how hard it would be to remove that from about 15+ models?
But in any case I think I will go with victrix models, they have separate heads and arms so they are easier to convert to more modern rifles and heads, And with somewhere between 45 and 60 in a box, there should be enough appropriate bodies, even if I screw up a few.

I’m still not decided upon which to use. The AMC’s are bearded fellows the lot of them. and the soldiers I’m going for are all blond hair blue eyes brats. (yes they are based on the Germans)
The whole uniform I can sculp, but I am not confident enough of my skill at human proportions and I really cant do faces. Hands I am ok at. So I guess I should look for the set that has the best faces and perhaps headgear and then go at the bodies with my dremel so that I can resculpt the majority of them.
Does any company make plastic soldier “blanks” so to speak by any chance?
