Another project... the tank designed by Leonardo da Vinci lol
(http://www.tobsen77.de/images/davinci1.jpg)
First try on wirebrush -> wood grain... thanks for the hint!

Dammit! That was my next project after the Virginia :P Looks good so far, though the woodgrain is hard to judge from the photos...
-
Very cool!
Although the title of the show needs some work or leads you to think of "other" venues....
Doing DaVinci on the Discovery Channel actually made a life size replica of the tank including working cannon, propelled by stuntmen...

that is really nice! actually, I've lost the site where I learned the wirebrush technique... I don't see very well from the photo, but it is really promising! :)

I was bored and so, took the personality quiz. Results:
You are Leonardo the Warrior!
Ever sketched gigantic powerful weapons creating mayhem and destruction on the battlefield? If so, you share this with Leonardo. The powerful war machines he designed were far ahead of their time — not to mention elegant and lethal. In his cryptic backward script, Leonardo conceived of a medieval tank, a multi-barreled "machine gun," scythed chariots and a giant crossbow.
Yes, unfortunately I do enjoy drawing strange gigantic weapons platforms blowing away the opposition. Oh, and big aliens that sneak up behind and destroy that while a pile of dropships disgorge dinosaur-riding men in funny hats with state-of-the-art powered armor. And a cosmonaut. There is always one of those.

lol lol lol
well.. now you've to post those drawings!!! :P I'm pretty interested, they should be very inspiring!!!
btw, mry Xmas (not the italian military corp)
-
I made some changes and built the tank as a mixture of the various images that can be found of Leonardo's original... I also slapped on some black wash to make the wood grain more visible ;)
There are six gunholes in the lower hull, which might not be historically accurate but fit in nice imho.

Now to make them in 25mm so my flintlok equipped romans have some heavy support.

It is supposed to be 25/28mm. Diameter is 8cm.

I dunno, last time I tried to scan the drawings I made with either of my green or blue pencils they didn't really work out too well. I'll try next time I have my sketch folder handy. Left it at school because the weather was sour on the last day :-X. Someone stole one of my pencils on that day too >:(.
Wasn't there view ports at the top there?

Nice work as always, Tobi. This is another project for Black Army. What can I say? He keeps coming back for more. The poor, sick, bastard...
I believe that in the sketches there was an open view between the hull and the top of the observation tower, but they aren't clear on the subject. I've seen various interpretations in the occasional reconstructions.

I'm pretty sure some vision slits will find their way.
I like it - one could also use it as a landing capsule for some VSF moon expedition
Doc, shouldn't You have Leonardo in Your range as well?
Maybe with an oversized brush in his hand? ;) ;) 8)
And maybe Mona Lisa, since Your sculptor is doing faces so well?
or perhaps a "last supper" vignette? ;)

Leonardo is another one of my favorites. Why on earth I didn't think of doing one I'm not sure... but it's a great idea, and I intend to steal it from you, so nyah;) I was very pleased to meet him in Assassins Creed II.
But seriously, great idea.
And yes, he is doing some amazing work on faces. Can't complain.

Thanks all, vision slits will be added in the final detail run ;)
btw... as a side project to this tank I am building something huge and truely frigthening. So make room in your medieval army for some superheavy support lol lol lol

It looks great, I look forward to have one in my collection :)
-
I'll probably need to buy one too for my Empire forces. :)
-
Could you perhaps put a figure in your next wip pictures to judge the scale?
-
I'd been thinking about building one of these for my Warhammer empire army as an alternative steam tank.

Happy new year... and a small update...

That is looking very cool.

Hi... I finished it. I thought about adding rivets or nails but imho that wouldn't fit the "original".

Looks very cool. Not wanting to pick at it and I could well be wrong, but wasn't this supposed to be propelled by a horse inside?

There were two different methods suggested by Da Vinci. One of them used horses, the other used a crew rotating a series of gears in order to provide propulsion. Testing has shown that the second method is much more practical, and at any rate, it seems to be what Leonardo preferred.

Wasn't aware of that, cheers Doc. A couple of weeks ago I was in Venice and stumbled accross a Da Vinci invention display in an old church. Some very cool models of various inventions including the rotating cannon deck for ships but I was surprised there was no model of the tank there. Took lots of photo's of the others though :)

Would love to see some of those photos, Dewbakuk:)
There is an exhibit in DaVinci's home town (Firenze/Florence), and they have what they claim to be a full scale reconstruction of the tank. From the photos, it actually looks a bit small to me, maybe half scale. Certainly big enough to fit three or four, but not big enough.

There are many different versions of this tank floating around the internet, original sketches and reconstructions. I built this with the imo best parts of all versions ;)
Thanks for your comments!

Theres a half Scale (i think) model at the Bovington tank museum, im sure it says on the plaque that it would not have worked :?

Yeah right... and dragons can't fly. Pffff lol lol lol

I guess my main practicial comment would be that given the number of guns, it's probably too small to accommodate the gear and number of crew required to make it move AND operate all those guns.
But who cares about that really? ;)
-
I did this years ago. Yours is closer to the original.

Great photos, Dewbakuk! Thanks for sharing!
Prototype experienced some mailing difficulties*, and is not yet here, but should be here shortly.

Well, Leonardo's tank finished it's tour of the far reaches of the earth and arrived on my doorstep today. Actually, it arrived at my front gate, and the DHL left the front gate open, which subsequently meant that the Dingo (Claudius) who had been outside sunning himself, decided to take the opportunity to go out for a walkabout around southern California...
Fortunately, both Claudius and Leonardo's tank are here, safe and sound, at the moment. This is a real gem of a piece, and it's a breeze to put together. Only separate bits are the cannon barrels. Methinks this will do well, me does. Hope to have it off to the caster, soon, but I'm still waiting for them to master the Filatov.
And incidentally, the most recent tests on Leonardo's design have shown that it -would- have worked. The problem with earlier tests was that not all testers realized DaVinci's little "trick". In addition to writing backwards, many gears were placed -backwards- so that someone who wanted to steal the design would fail at replicating it. It's amazing how many of Leonardo's designs have since been found to be quite workable by simply reversing the position of a gear, switching part "a", with part "b", etc.

Still looking forward to getting this! 8)

It is also on my list of wants for the future :)

Probably means that they couldn't get it through the tank assault course :~}
