Ok, as promised a step by step guide to the building of the governor's palace.
This will comprise the largest of my buildings for San Antonio De Bejar and will represent the home of the governor from Spanish times, through Mexican then into Texian independence. It will incorporate a small barracks, stable block, four separate balconies and many doors and windows.
Here is an overview of the basic model assembled so far, glued and pinned.

There are still some retaining walls to be added to the rear, but these will not be done until the model is glued onto the base board. That will happen after all the doors, windows and balconies have been added.

Here you can see I have started to add the door frames and window frames.

Here I am starting on the more ornate door of the entrance to the offices. This door will be representative of the panelled Spanish style doors that appear on more affluent houses and churches.

And finally a progress shot so far. Adding the wooden detailing is probably the longest and hardest part. But its also the most rewarding as the buildings really start to take shape as these bits are added.

The large opening on the left will be a balcony that wraps aroound the side and joins another opening on the left hand side.
Right, I'm off for lunch and then back to work this afternoon before going out tonight to see in the new year :)

It's rubbish! I hate it! :-*
When its finished send it to me and I'll get rid of it for you. lol
Don't be resting on your laurels either! The world of Zorro needs constant attention. The devil makes work for sculptors who aren't fed regular designs. ;)
Lets have some more figures! Vamos!
I love this range.

Thanks for sharing, I will enjoy following this. A question tho, regarding the earlier stages of the build. Do you work from a photo, a sketch, a plan, or is the basic structure 'simply'* imagined and built?
*Tho, of course, there is nothing simple about it!
-
That's a really good looking project Nick, keep up the good work!

Another lovely piece, and quite a size too! You'll have to get Bago round to take care of the sanding duties when its plastered, don't want to damage your own lungs! lol
-
It looks very interesting!
can't wait to see it finished.
-
:-*
Madre Mia!
¿Tu es loco, o qué?
Es asombroso!
-
Wonderful. As is known, I love WIPs. And especially this one from the master of adobe architecture ...
:-*
"Guten Rutsch!" as we say here in old Germany (meaning something like "Have a good sliding into the new year!")
-
FANTASTIC!!!! :o Looking great!

He can do his own sanding thank you! I did some (about 30 seconds worth) on one of the previous buildings and thats his lot. Besides my lungs are f**ked enough anyway from all the smoking ::)

All of the above :D
I usually get my inspiration to start from a photo, either a movie or a book. In the case of all the adobe buildings so far they have been heavily influenced by the recent Alamo movie which had a wonderful set for San Antonio De Bejar.
I used lots of stills as reference material.
Then I draw a basic sketch of what I want to make. Then draw the outline onto the base board to see if it will fit ok and work as a model when viewed from all sides.
Then I build it. Normally things get changed and slightly modified as I progress.

Have patience Amigo. ;)
The next release will be in a couple of weeks, then lots and lots of Mexicans in the spring. :D

Looks Really good so far and will be stunning when finished!! That fancy door really impresses me though, just the thought of getting all those small pieces of wood glued in the right places gives me nightmares!!
-
Superb :-*
Looking forward to following progress 8)

Splendido! Just in time for me to tranfer any of the profits from my own stuff straight into the bank of Malamute.
-
Great stuff so far.
What are the dimensions of the base board?
-
Nick, it goes without saying that I love it - but I'll say it anyway. It should be superb when finished!
As an aside, have you any pics of typical Presidio buildings? I've just read "The Mark Of Zorro" (again, after a 20 year hiatus) and quite a bit of it takes place in and around the Presidio. I have a couple of the one in San Antonio de Béxar, but nothing detailed enough to attempt a decent model.
Thanks for any help and a Happy New Year!.
Right, off to get paralytic :D
-
Stunning work Nick on the G Palace.

Check out Presidio La Bahia, or Goliad as it is better known. (Site of the infamous massacre of Fannin's command during the Texas war.)
Its fully restored and presevered. There should be lots of useful stuff on the website.

Let me know if you need more info and I'll have a look in my favourites at work next week
-
Nick this looks like it is going to be grand :-* :-*
Its huge :o
Love the detail on the door :-*
Looking forward to seeing the progress
-
it's funny, it was just the same way we work. Except that I coat the walls before putting doors and windows. it keeps me from across the recorks crack. In any case, a beautiful building in anticipation: bravo!

That's the one I meant to say - I don't know why I wrote "San Antonio" :?
I'll look at that link later.
-
We're going to need a bigger table (and room).
Looking forward to seeing this progress :)
More cuttings from the hebe will no doubt be required.
-
Outstanding! Gave me a yearning to watch The new version Alamo all over again, and I missed the Italian Job because of it! ::)
"I have to warn you boys, I'm a screamer!" lol
-
Just came back from a skiing trip and found this wonderful guide ;D ;D ;D ... absolutely nice and I just can not wait to see the building finished.
And I also need a building for my governor for my pirate range :D and new ideas are always welcome :D :D :D
By the way will you add a bell tower??? lol lol lol
-

I especially love the detailed door - this will look great! :-*
-
That's incredible!
The fact that it will actually get used in games is what makes me the most envious :P
Do you do any interiors for your buildings? Have you ever had any need to?
Great work!

Mighty cool!!!!

Only three more of these to do, trouble is I have run out of balsa wood, so its off to Hobbycraft in the week.
Its also back to work tomorrow after the holidays, so progress will now be restricted to weekends and days off, and of course the required permission from Mrs M to enjoy myself ;)
-
What sort of balsa do you need mate?
cheers
James

Cheers matey,
I'll bring some small pieces along tomorrow night to give you an idea, I have no idea what size they are or how they are measured. ::)
I aslo need some plastic tubing to support my flagpole.
I think my shopping list at Oshiro models is going to be a long one. lol
-
While you're over there you might want to talk to Herr Bibbly about resin casting those doors. Given how many of them you use and how many people on the forum want to copy them, I suspect it'd be worth while. The balsa would need sealing I'd expect but then Jimmy knows his stuff :P
-
I can do that :)
cheers
James

Great doors - must have been very fiddly.

On the other hand, you don't half leave yourself open to smutty innuendo...

After looking at plenty of reference pics, they are (http://very) accurate and would certainly be great time-savers, so would be ideal for many gamers doing Mexican/Texan/Californian projects. If I ever do get to make my Presidio, I'll certainly be able to use a few.
Boot Hill Minis first foray into resins? ;)

No, look what happened to the Master, when he tried to cram world domination into two episodes!
As a very err "wise" man once wrote on the LAF, "slowly, slowly catchee monkey"
lol

Stunning work! Very inspiring! :-*
