Title: Need Terrain pictures
Post by: Operator5 on 30 April 2007, 09:45:10 PM
I'm going to be working on a project this summer and I need to build a good fantasy waterfront (docks, warehouses, shops etc.) in 28mm.

Anyone have any links to some good images? Just looking for inspiration to get me started.

Privateer Press' No Quarter magazine recently (issue 11) had an extensive article on building docks

He has some great docks and I have a complete set of his boats, but I really want some inspiration for what a waterfront would look like with buildings and docks in place.

My first mini convention was Fall In in 2003 when it was in Timonium (Baltimore) and Games Workshop attended.  They had a city there (the one used in the General's Compendium) and I photographed it heavily.  Check out my gallery (chrisvmd.fotki.com) and see if any of those pics would be of use.  I loved the way they'd done the docks, though they were a very small portion of the board.

Those definitely help Chris (though I wish you had taken some overhead shots of the docks---they're all at eye level.   )

I'm going to build a Dark Ages/Medieval period city dock. I'm trying to get an idea of what the buildings would be like. Mostly wood. Some stone. Half timbered or not. Things of that nature.

Zaffarelli has built a Gaming table for Privateer Press which depicts a dockland setting.
Although he has used his brick buildings, the layout may be interesting nontheless!

There are none on his site, but I suppose, he has some on his computer, just ask him.

Here you go:

Constructed from some of my wooden bridges (http://pardulon.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=33_38&products_id=53), water was done with some Noch product which did not have the courtesy to set until the event for which the table was built was over.

It thought I had an aerial picture somewhere, but cannot find it. Anyway, this is more or less all of the docks, it was built right in the edge and took very little space.

Yes, I remember! Spiel 2006, wasn´t it? You told me in person while I was drooling over the industrial buildings...

Prof, I had to work on very short notice, and so the water is not completely dry, thus the white foam effect. Though it looked kind of nice, the water is clear now. Still looks nice, I think  :)

Chris, yes, Spiel 06. Construction of the table was a horrible time for me, and the water was only applied a few days beforehand.

How long does this NOCH water needs to dry?? I thought about using this in the next weeks for a project but I don't think I can keep the area around the object dirt and dust free.  :freak:

PS: Sorry for getting off topic.

Now that I am thinking about it, I used Vallejo Gel Denso for the water on this table. It is white in the container, dry to the touch within 24 hours when applied very thin, but takes ages until it is fully dry and becomes clear.

The Noch stuff is clear from the beginning, but takes even longer to harden, and stays slightly flexble. If you need results quickly, go for clear polyester or some other unhealthy petrochemical product.

Still in a testphase but something has to be on display when Crisis 2007 arrives!
