Did anybody saw any of the episodes of Tales of the Golden Monkey?
http://www.goldmonkey.com/
They seem a great resource of ideas. (not that I don't have enough ideas already, but I guess its a bit like mini's : you never have enough ;) )
-
I know I loved it at the time, but it was only ever shown once over here, and I find I can remember almost nothing about it any more.
Flying Boat, chap a bit like Indy, and Japanese. That's all that's left in my head.
-
You can find BAD dvd and vhs copies on ebay. The show was fun for the time it was on. A little dated (hard to say that of a period show). They re-used too much footage and it had bad 80s effects.
That being said. I LOVED IT! I'd get the whole thing if they ever released an official DVD. German spy, Dragon Lady, American Spy, former Flying Tiger and his mechanic and dog.
The pilot episode and maybe a handful of others were actually good. But there could be some great scenarios buried in those episodes.
-
I loved it too, although it only aired once here in New Zealand.
I recall the mechanic's dog had a false eye that was a gem of some value or something hokey like that? There were occasional episodes where the poor dog had to wear an eye patch because the mechanic kept hocking his eye for money to stay in the air.
Hmmm, or did I just make that up?
-
Nope, you didn't make that up, but the details were a little differemt.
The pilot would lose the eye constantly in poker games. There was a running joke about them using the dog to check the cards of the other players and the pilot always getting the signals wrong.
-
If it ain't true it ought to be.
-
Ahh, That takes me back to the 80's. :) Am I right in saying Simon Mc Corkingdale was the pilot, or am I making that up?
-
It was Stephen Collins, the dad on "7th Heaven".
Great show and fond memories of it myself. And a contributing factor to me wanting a 1/43 Grumman Goose model. Just because.

I'm the same way, vague memories of it being good, also of a slowly closing door to a temple in a village, time to escape but only if they drop the treasure.
All that drinking really hasn't helped my memory over the years.

I have another even older favourite that I remember even less. Something called "The Bear Cats." A kind of Wild West show but they drove around in a car. I was so tiny that I remember nothing more than this. But I do remember how much I loved it, and how we would play 'bear cats' for hours outside.

You know, Pulp figures has a pack of figures inspired by the show, including the dog with eye-patch. 8)

Anyone remember "Bring 'em Back Alive!?
It aired about the same time "Tales Of The Gold Monkey" did
-
Gold Monkey was a lot of fun to watch. I remember "Bring 'em Back Alive" but only barely and would love to see that show again.

Plynkes - The Bearcats, 1971, 13 episodes, starring Rod Taylor and Dennis Cole. The car was a Stutz Bearcat, hence the name.
nb246 - Bring 'Em Back Alive, 1982, 18 episodes, starring Bruce Boxleitner

Wow, thanks for memory lane. I loved this show back in the 80s when I was a youngin'. Never saw more than a couple of episodes, but it was so much fun for me at my age!

Got to admit as a kid I was obsessed with this. I loved the pilots water plane - correct me if I'm wrong called "Cutter's Goose"?
The horrible monkeys of the title scared the living crap outta me.

Looks like that's a UK-only release. We'll have to wait until Spring 2010 for the North American release in Canada.
-
It's supposed to be released on Region 1 in February. I was within minutes of ordering the English version (released this month) when I saw the announcement.
I have bootlegs, and definitely concur - it IS a great show, and a great resource of pulp ideas.

Yes it was a Grumman Goose, called "Cutters Goose". I have a 1/72nd scale model of one along with specific decals for Cutter's Goose that someone in the US had created and were selling on eBay. It sits unpainted until I can afford to get it done properly as I'm sure I'd muck it up.
Great Show and one of my all time favorites as a kid.

Thanks, Archangel. And only two years after I asked about it. lol
In the mean time I had looked it up ont' net, and even found pictures.

It looks just as cool as I (vaguely) remember it. What's not to like about a veteran car with an MG on it?

Here's a link for those interested in building Jake's bird. Decals are available in both 1/72 and 1/48.

The first modelling link onsite even shows a build for Blackhawk's Skyrocket.

Thanks for the link :D

Oh good grief - thats a very welcome blast from the past!

I loved these TV shows. It has brought back pleasant memories.
There was another TV series, that I used to beg my mother to allow me to stay up late to watch, that I liked, "Adventures in Paradise". http://capitainetroy.free.fr/eng/home.html (http://capitainetroy.free.fr/eng/home.html)
One of these days I going to get them all in DVD.
I really remember only small bits and pieces here and there... I guess I liked it so much because the guys were sailing around in a schooner. Something that I have always wanted to do in real life. :?
-
I used to watch both "Bring'em Back Alive" and "Tales of the Gold Monkey" Very fond memories from my youth. We used to tune in every week for 'Gold Monkey' as we called it. Great memories.
-
Disney's Tale Spin was rip off spin off of Tales of the Golden Monkey. My one memory was of the main character hiding as a Mud Man and just loving the show.

Lindberg makes an affordable 1/48 Goose.

I bought two of them myself: one to paint navy colors and the otehr to make Cutters Goose. I haven't finished them yet. They are rugged models, not too bad for wargaming. The dorsal top is removeable so one can access the interior of the plane. It does not have an interior though, so it would all need to be scratchbuilt if one wanted. It's number 482 on my to-do list.
-
If I recall correctly, Tales of the Gold Monkey and Bring Em Back Alive went head-to-head on different networks each week and you had to choose which one to watch. I have bootleg sets of each of these shows and they are excellent souces of scenarios.
I loved Tales of the Gold Monkey.
I liked Bring Em Back Alive, but not as well. It was a 100% fictional tale using the name of the real adventurer Frank Buck, who some may know appeared as himself in the 1949 comedy Africa Screams.
-
Netflix has the DVD's for "Tales of the Gold Monkey".
-
I saw it on the spanish tv when I was a kid, and I loved it.
I saw an episode one year ago and i fell asleep. :?
