Title: COCONUTS FOR THE KAISER
Post by: Plynkes on 06 May 2007, 02:08:10 PM
In which Grimm receives his comeuppance for the horrid beastly things he said about cricket:  :)

Not the best game we've ever had, but the story must be told.

Even for a 'non-event' game it reads well  :)

I see you have a Hornby pylon for a radio mast. Mine arrived yesterday, I saw one on E-bay and ordered some from a mail order model shop. I'd never seen them before last week and now I'm going to spot them everywhere aren't I.

Nice smoke too. The islands look like S&A Scenic desert hills, even if they're not I'm going to buy some and press them into service.

So despite everything not going to plan I, at least, found it inspirational.

Good show.

Yes, they are S&A Scenics hills. My table cloths come from the same source.

As far as the hills go I've switched to Tablescape now for when I want more, as they match the S&A stuff quite well for colour, but due to their stepped nature you don't have all the hassle of the figues falling over all the time. This happened a bit with that island in the game, the palm trees kept toppling into the sea.

The island in this pic is a Tablescape hill (no falling over here):

I don't have any sand ones yet, but I'm gonna get some. They are much less of a pain than the S&A ones (even though those do look nice).

Houston's Ships, available through TVAG.

They're one-offs. Pricey, but I couldn't make anything like that myself, and the exchange rate cushions the blow tremendously.

Great stuff!!  You always have a way of telling the game that really draws you in!

Thanks for taking the time to post the battle report.  The only sad thing is that I know I'll have to wait a while till you post the next one....

Looks like the Empire's coconuts are safe for now.

I knew it! Pierre Moreau (Pete Murray, I assume) didnt manage it   Sorry, Pete, I think, next time your cousin will revenge you!

Thanks, Plynkes, as usual, your report is an absolute delight!

Thanks, Prof.

Oh, by the way, the sharp-eyed Matakishi is correct. The "transmitter tower" is indeed a Hornby electricity pylon with the electric doodads left off. Nothing gets past him!  :)

Excellent. And from a game stand-point, finding some flaws was good for you. You won't make the same mistake twice.

Pierre, unfortunately, will never be able to be humiliated. Maybe his cousin can take over the series though.

Great, great great! I love it. And your writing style is just 100% spot on.

Well that was a horribly anti-climactic death. No dying speech of Adieu, belle France? Just sort of found in the carnage afterwards, eh? An anonymous, banal death on the frontier, and for which the perfidious Anglais will no doubt claim single-handed victory!   We can only hope that my agent turns this into a tale of how I single-handedly held off the marauding Hun while the feckless Englishmen sat in their tents and called for help.

Naturally this means that you will have to make an appearance in one of my games soon.

Oh how I chortled over the tiny copies of Gloire, though. For this you earn some measure of redemption.

Well, this is the Great War. There was seldom much glory to be had in being blown apart by high explosives. I suppose the death of the novelist can stand as a symbol for the romantic notions of a generation, brutally fed into the uncaring machine of war in 1914, and spat out again as so much meat.

Blimey, I almost sound serious there. Better put a stop to that.

I say, we would have got away with it, if it hadn´t been for those meddling machine-guns!

I've never really thought of comparing the Great War to an episode of Scooby Doo. I shall have to study both in greater depth to see if the analogy holds up under close scrutiny.

For a moment there, I thought you were channeling every Australian war movie director, producer, and author ever. I mean the only thing left was Paul Hogan going "Roight then. Another cuppa?"

As I recall, each episode of Scooby-Doo begins with the gang singing about the Alsace and negotiating with the Austro-Hungarians, so I would say it's a close match so far. And didn't the war end with Kaiser Wilhelm being revealed as Old Man Roberts, who owned the abandoned amusement park?

Well, any episode of Scooby Doo I ever saw (yes, all three!) had a level of horror that would not be out of place in the trenches. You know, that certain "THE HORROR! THE HOOOORRROR!!!" :o :o type of horror.

Hummm... now that reminds me of that one episode of "The Simpsons"...

"Yes, I´m Billy the Kid, and this is my posse: Jesse James and his brother Frank, and the most dangerous German of all time, Kaiser Wilhelm! Yee-haw!"

And he´s a Zombie, too!

Hi Matakishi or Poly

Can you let me know what scale  the Hornby Pylon is please. I'd like to purchase one for my German colonies and scenarios for the Great War.

Thankyou so much.  :)

God Bless

Hi Helen. Not sure in terms of scale, it is a model railway piece and the box says it is OO Gauge. I think that equates to 1/72 or 1/76. Something like that. Not totally sure, as I've never really been a model railway buff. So it isn't really 28mm by any stretch, but I reckon it worked okay as a radio mast for that scale.

Then again, I'm notoriously sloppy about things. My finished mast is just shy of 8 and 1/4 inches high, if that helps any.

It's really meant to be an electricity pylon, like so:

But it was the closest thing I could find to a radio mast, and it served well enough.

They're 20mm scale as far as wargamers go. That should make them 2/3 the size of a 28mm scale pylon which is close enough for me considering the heights of most of the trees I have (dwarf trees, like most wargames ones.).

There's nothing quite like a pylon or a railway track to 'date' a game layout, I think thay're well worth the investment.

Oh, they come in a box of three  :)
