I've been working on some 'early' west (say 1820's-1850's) bits for quite a while on and off, but I've never really worked around to posting them up anywhere*. I thought I'd remedy that and post them up here. Most of the pictures have been taken in something of a rush, and are usually from before the figure was based... so my appologies for both of those. The Painting is 'good gaming' rather than display.
There are lots more figures to be added to the 'set', although the rate at which that happens will depend how much confederate stuff I need to churn out for Atlantis...
Figures by Foundry, CFM (now Blazeaway), Brigade, Conquest, Artizan, Dixons & Boothill
*Not strictly true - they've lurked in the corner of a subsection of the Post apocalyspe wargames forum...

"Benjy my man, I got to tell you… your hat smell funny" lol
Nice collection of figures. It’s nice to see that there isn't a great difference in size between the various manufacturers
-
Nice work. You can do a lot with that era. Some Alamo/Texas revolution, Indians, War of 1812, lots.
-
Thanks chaps!
-
Wow, thats quite a collection you have been amassing there Xander. A posititve plethora of different manufacturers!
It was fun trying to recognise all the different companies, great stuff. :)
-
Thanks Nick, and I must lay all the credit/blame for the project squarely at your door. Although it was something I had vaguely toyed with since I picked up Chris Peers' 'War on the Plains' cheaply at a bring-andbuy, the boothill releases finally catalysed me into action! :D
-
So that's what Dawgie looks like ;)
A nice collection the Xander. I've got something similar planned for next year. I'll be looking back a this post for some inspiration!
(Edited for spelling.)
-
Ta Christian! All this stuff (and some more musing) is also on the PA wargames forum; and if you want to have a chat about the period, you'realways welcome to PM!
-
Yep lots of fillabusters you got there, I thinkt its time to fallow Kit Carson and round the Bearflag republic. Or maby try and found your own empire out in the old west and dear with the Army when it shows.
-
just had to come back an look at all of them agine they are vary nice :D
-
Thanks Commissarmoody :)
Well, I've done a bit more painting - so here are the latest additions....

3 blackfeet indians (Foundry, not terribly happy with these, but I couldn't seem to improve them - so I gave up trying!)
3 CFM figures... none of these figures seemed to really 'gel' as I painted them up, so they may get reworked. Having said that, they do look better in the flesh. From L to R they are: Gwyn Jones, Willis Moore & the figure that was called Mial Scurlock.... but as Boothill have also done a 'Mial scurlock; this figure will now be called John Bowden...

Charles Despallier, Son of a plantation owner from Louisiana looking for adventure in Texas. (Boothill)

More fine examples of the earler west, read my reply to the cape rifles being used as texes cav in the Cape wars thread?
-
Cheers. Aye, I did read that - and I recon you're onto something. The headgear might need a bit of tweaking, and they may need to be given sword belts, but otherwise I recon they'd work a treat!
Having looked at the first corps volunteer casualties, they appear to be in 'civvy' kit, so I may well add some of those to my fillibusters... and if it turns out that they aren't, I guess I just started collecting stuff for the mex-Am war a year earlier than I'd planned!
-
I like the standard, that CF figure works well carrying the flag. Nice work on the blanket coat too :)
Be careful with the 1st Corps Cape Wars figures, they are small 28s and might be on the short side (if you are bothered about such things).
-
Thanks for the warning & compliments Nick - I had assumed that the cape wars figures would be the same size as the Mexican-American war & ACW figures? I've got some M-A Mountain Men & some ACW dismounted cavalry and they fit in well with the Likes of Foundry, Artizan & of course Boothill ;). If the cape wars figures are infact the same size as their Sci-Fi range, then I'll definatley have to pass...
-
Yeah I am thinking the hats might need some reworking also, the texans were supposed to have forage caps and fully plumed 1812 style helmet.
but being Texans I am sure there were all sorts of head gear.
And I was wondering about there sizw becase I was also looking at useing some of the boars and was wondering if they might be small now.
-
Those were awesome and answered all My questions as to weather all those lines would fit together.
Thanks
-
VERY IMPRESSIVE...cool minis don't necessarily equate to award winning paint jobs. I find your work inspiring; AND just about all your pieces are new to moi...that doesn't happen often. Please keep posting; this stuff is GREAT!
-
Thanks for the nice comments - I'd forgotten I'd posted this lot up here! There are a few more that I've done, but not photographed yet. Recently my painting output has decreased (spending time with my fiance - lovely, but not condusive to painting) and what I have been doing has mainly be on my moderns.
I'm hopping to be able to crack on with a pile more of these chappies later in the year, as I got a stack at the last Foundry sale. I've also converted some of the models with revolvers to have flintlock pistols (I was inspired by some of Malamute's foundry conversions). Blaze-Away/Cannon-Fodder have released a couple more poses (including some cavalry versions of exisiting figures) which I'll get at some stage.
-
Lovely collection!
-
great stuff. finishing the first couple of groups for a bleeding kansas game and hoping that some of the figures will double up nicely for some other 1850s (and earlier) games.
on a side note what are the 1st corps mountain men like??
-
Great number of figures,well painted.
Not a lot of gamers tend to play 1830, 1840 mountain man period.
Would love to see them in a wargame, that would be a treat.
-
Lovely work there, Xander. :D
-
Thanks Chaps! :D
I've actually started apinting a few more figures for this period recently - mainly to give me a break from painting dark age figures! I've attatched some photos at the bottom of this post...
The 1st Corps Moutain men are nice figures - lots of character and easy to paint. The pistols are a bit on the small side, and the bowies a bit too large... But I like them. The only down side is that there are only 5 or 6 sculpts in a pack of 8.
In terms of period - I had often fancied the Foundry range, and then Boot Hill miniatures gave me a 'second' range in the era... I like the range of outfits and equipment available, as well as it being a bit of a closer contest between the various factions.
I might well get a chance for a game in early October.. If I do, I'll put up some photos!
CFM Frontiersmen, with plains rifle and Capote blanket coat. A bit of a quick job, but he didn't turn out too badly.
Foundry Mountain Man - May yet go back and put some stripes on his Blanket coat as I can't decide if it looks too plain.
Lt J Evans (CFM)
Apache (Foundry, to act as a scout for my Meican Lancers), Running Boy (Dixons, likely to become and objective in game - save the boy from the grizzly/Indians/etc) & a Cheyenne brave with musket (Foundry, but I don't have a mounted version of this guy)
Mexican Rancheros (boothill) - the fellow in the grey jacket looks a bit older and more refined. Perhaps he owns the Hacienda where the ranchero's work? Certianly, his escopeta seems quite well worked...
Miles D Andross (CFM), Daniel William Cloud (Boothill, one of many lawyers from Kentucky who drifted to Texas in the hope of making his fortune) & Freeman Day (CFM)
A few odds and sods - you've seen these guys before, but they've had their revolvers swapped for muzzle loaders, to put them more into the 1830's that 40's/50's
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc298/v_lazy_dragon/P1100417.jpg)
And a group shot after clearing some of my basing backlog...
-
A great collection youa re building there. Looking forward to seeing some game reports :)
-
Thanks Nick - there'll be another order coming your way at some stage... but first I need to reduce the lead pile. I'm not normally one to be plagued by my lead conscience, but having seen quite how many figures are in the unpainted 'Early West' pile I think I need to get painting!
-
but first I need to reduce the lead pile. I'm not normally one to be plagued by my lead conscience, but having seen quite how many figures are in the unpainted 'Early West' pile I think I need to get painting!
lol
You can never have too much lead :D
-
You haven't seen how much I've amassed ;D
But also, I'm hoping the thought of buying new stuff will encourage me to get painting... it usually works! ;)
-
i blame 'blood meridian' for encorouging me into the early west (that and lots of hand weapons!)
-
I haven't read Blood Meridian yet, but it's on my "to Get" list...
There's also a great quote out there somewhere about the well nkow phrse 'bringing a knife to a gun fight", and how back in the early days it was more of a case of bringing a gun to a knife fight. Afterall - if your pistol only has one shot, and you mis, then your reload time is a lot longer than a knifes ;)
-
recently read about James Bowie's 'sand bar fight' when he is shot, shot by accident, stabbed and impaled with a sword cane - and he disembowels the bloke with the sword cane!
the reloading was another reason i got interested, i really like the idea of someone desperately trying to reload their one shot weapon as a hatchet wielding attacker tries to sprint across the board at them!!
-
Slow down, your paint brush will catch fire.........
-
No chance of that John - its washed through too often to catch fire ;)
Most of the figures I had pretty much finished previously, and were only a case of finishing off odds and ends (e.g. webbing, weaponry and hair)
-
It sure is a nice collection, I didn't realise that all these companies were compatible..... :o
-
Dixon is the least compatible, but all the rest match up well (the foundry plains indians are a smidge on the small side but still look ok)
-
ordered 'crow killer' last night for a bit of a read regarding mountain men.
-
Dixon is the least compatible, but all the rest match up well (the foundry plains indians are a smidge on the small side but still look ok)
An easy solution would be to put the Dixon figures on slightly thicker bases. From the distance (on the table top) the thickness of the bases isn’t really noticeable and it bring the Dixon figures closer to the other manufacturers larger miniatures.
-
Thanks for the suggestion - I didn't think of that at the time, and have since sold the Dixons figures, but if I get any more I will!
-
picked up the 1st corps mountain men at SELWG today after seeing them in your pics - great stuff
-
Cheers :) Glad to be an insperation!
-
And a little bit of an update from my painting desk...

More goodness. That is some collection now. Unusually, for me, I have made a decision to finish one project at a time. Not sure how long that will last...... 8)
-
Thanks John - you should see the size ofthe unpainted pile ::)
I'm actually finding that at the moment by hopping between projects I'm being moderately productive - most of the incentive for re-starting/switching between painting projects comes from new releases or seeing interesting things on eBay. (Although after reenactment training I do have a sudden spike of painting viking age figures for a day or two before trailing back off to what ever my previous interest was)
I've not done much on my Quar or Modern African stuff recently :-I I am just keeping my fingers crossed for more exciting new releases to kick them back into gear....
-
Nicely done, I always wanted to do a weird film I caught once, think it had richard harris in it where they ahd a group of mountain men dragging a small ship overland being attacked by indians. I think Harris was mauled by a bear at one point?
Yup fully agree on the quar I have too many but await more ;D

Man in the Wilderness (1971) with Richard Harris and John Huston
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067388/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067388/)
It's based on a true story and is a good film.
Other people in the cast include James Doohan (Star Trek), Dennis Waterman (Minder) and Norman Rossington (Reginald Perrin).

I bet my pile is bigger than your pile................. :D
-
Bulk pile - probably :)
PEriod/genre specific piles? That might be a bit of a closer run lol

I can still win.
-
Yeah, you probably would at that :)

Great stuff as always, you have serious collection now. Great to see the "Come and take it Gun" as well. :)
-
Cheers Nick - trying to clear some space/conscience room ready for your next release lol
Atleast with the new ones being dismounted I should make better progress with them than I have wiht he rest of my BH stash (One of the original aims of the project was to get me past my dislike of painting horses, in much the same way as the moderns got me past my dislike for painting camo... except that it hasn't worked so well, and I just end up gritting my teeth and painting horses slowly! lol)
-
i find, thats a great idea to play at this time in the old west :o
in my impression the most people plays at the period of the western
movies, like the magnificient seven, red river, the searchers, rio bravo and so on...
i'm no exception, because i like it so much.
your ambition is very good. nice figures.
excuse me for my terrible english, i do my very best...
-
Thankyou :) Your English is fine - and certainly better than my German!
I do like the movie 'Golden Era' wild west as well, but I fancied something a bit different - this was originally going to be a small side project, but it kept growing!
