Title: What Ho Nazis Chapter Two.
Post by: Trooper on 27 February 2010, 11:23:26 PM
Chapter Two

During the drive down to Bassett Parva, Bertie had ample time to formulate his plan. He wisely decided to keep it simple. He would use the bus to block the lane leading into the village, halt the wedding party and seize Spode, he and his men would then re-board the bus and take the Woodbridge Road back to the A12.  If done with speed there would little time for the fascists to react in force. For once Jeeves concurred with the simplicity of the scheme, and had set about organising their small group, using his previous military experience to allocate tasks. It has to be said that he gave Bertie a rather undemanding role in the whole matter, in the hope that the hapless Wooster would not undo the plan through any misadventure. Events would however surprise Jeeves and cause him to view his employer in a whole new light.

As the bus reached the crossroads in the centre of the village, the Ganymede men disembarked and moved into their positions. Two of them walked towards the Police Station. The village constable was standing outside facing away from them. Their intent was to overpower him before he could raise the alarm. However he proved difficult to overcome, and put up an effective fight, pushing his assailants off, he ran into the building. Wooster's men took up positions and the bus started to move into place. The doors of the Police Station flew open and an armed squad of BUF militia men issued forth into the path of the oncoming bus. Two of them dived out the way, a third was not so lucky and went down under the bus wheels. The two that escaped were then peppered with fire from a Lewis gun, in position outside Hammond's Garage. This put them out of action. The remainder of the squad were equally unfortunate and were subdued without firing a shot in reply. The bus was placed to block the lane just in time to halt the wedding convoy. The leading vehicle, a BUF lorry carrying the guard of honour screeched to a halt, and the occupants debussed, immediately coming under fire from riflemen in cover near the main road. The driver and his mate advanced towards the Police Station, but were  met by accurate fire from Bertram Wooster, who had taken up a spot next to the parked BUF van, adjacent to the Police Station. The two BUF legion men were felled by the burst. “Whacko!!!” Bertie shouted, “That holiday in Chicago was worth it after all.” Jeeves, who had taken up a firing position with his Lewis gun at the road junction had also tried to fire on them, when his weapon had jammed. He was forced to take cover to clear the jammed gun.  He was to have no further luck with that cursed weapon for the duration of the action. With the head of the wedding convoy blocked, the guests began to disembark, seeking cover from the rounds now flying around. The German military attache, his driver and aide made their forward. As the reached the end of the lane, the driver armed with an MP38 and the aide with his luger fired upon their attackers without success. Bertie and the Lewis gunner outside Hammonds returned fire, and both scored hits downing their foes. The exchange of fire across the fields was not going well for the BUF men, and they started taking casualties.

Inside the Police Station, Constable Bulstrode had reached Ipswich HQ on the telephone requesting help. He then decided that his best course of action was to remain in cover in case Wooster chose to pinch his helmet again. He had recognised the voice of his adversary above the gunfire. The non combatant members of the wedding party made their way back to Bassett Hall. Spode, his best man and his driver decided to move to the better cover offered by the leading lorry and his remaining troops. By now it was clear that the ambushers had the upper hand, and Spode was considering a withdrawal when they were called upon to surrender. Shots passed over their heads and this seemed to decide the issue for them. They immediately flung their hands up. The remaining BUF men started to withdraw, shaking their heads at the cowardice of their leader. Spode and his cronies were soon in custody, and not a moment too soon. By now, two Crossley Tenders loaded with re inforcements for the BUF, had reached the Ipswich road, and were preparing to advance on the scene.   Bertie supervised the loading of Spode and his pals onto the bus, whilst Jeeves led the other Ganymede men to the bus. Before they pulled away, Jeeves having cleared the jammed Lewis gun fired it at the BUF lorry, venting his frustation on the abandoned vehicle. In high spirits the bus and  it's passengers drove away towards Woodbridge and glory. The Beast of Bromley had been tamed, and only two of their number had received minor injuries.

An excellent little game and great fun. My thanks to John, aka whassiname, for so quickly entering into the spirit of the story. Bertie Wooster will be making further appearances in the story of the BCW have no doubt.

A vary good report, what rules are you useing?

The rules are adapted from the wonderfully uncomplicated GW Necromunda set. Figures are a mixture of Foundry, Musketeer, Empress and Renegade. Vehicles by Matchbox, and Ledo. Buildings and terrain scratchbuilt.

Looks marvellous, and a lot of fun.  And how nice to see a police box that really is a police box.

Have you considered mixing in some Eighth Army figures so that Spode can really have a unit of Blackshorts?

As the other participant I have to say that it was an absolute pleasure: great scenery, very well painted figures and a generous host and opponent.

Bravo to Trooper for a well organised and planned scenario, bags of character, lots of tactical options on a well thought out gaming table, and plenty to talk about afterwards.

Excellent report!  Would have thought that Jeeves would have been a dab hand when it came to unjamming the Lewis, though (he is when it comes to most other things, although I suppose dealing with a jammed LMG is rather different to a nephew-crushing aunt...).

I just love Hugh Laurie's face there as they drive off. I miss Hugh Laurie. I got sick of watching medical dramas after years addicted to E.R. Like most reformed addicts, I can no longer stomach the thing I was once addicted to, and so never watch that kind of thing any more. I wish he'd stop pretending to be an American doctor and come back to us and be funny.

I arrived ready for this great game. A day late! However, I enjoyed having a good look at the set up and it's even better in the 'flesh'. Felt very British, as they say, with beautifuly painted figures.
I take my tweed cap off to you, Trooper, and shall pay more regard to triffling things like diaries in future!

Next time Grant have no fear, I will give more warning so that you can make it, and your Norwich bus men can get in on the action.

Edward, apologies to you, if I hadn't had to get to London that day, I would have gone for a replay, sorry.

Funghy-Fipps, Jeeves does according to snippets of his back story in the books, have previous military experience, out in India apparently. However on the day he just coulod not get that Lewis gun to work, he held a vital spot but was unable to hit a thing. Bertie however proved to be dead eye dick with his Thompson, I thought the sixes would never stop.

Sadly the Orwell People Militia never made it to the field of honour, after receiving the information the planning committee had to meet and ratify their plan of action in response to the news. Their decision was then put to the armaments committee to decide on a proper allocation of weapons and ammunition for the job. When that meeting was concluded the resources and personnel sub-committee met to compile a list of properly qualified personnel to take part. That meeting, when finished, was celebrated  with large amounts of imported vodka, courtesy of Uncle Joe. So much was consumed, that they didn't wake up until 3.00pm the next day. Sadly nobody was sober enough to form a quorum to vote for completion of the mission. And Bertie and his boys were well away with their prize!!

This is incredible.

I didn't know anything about Jeeves and Wooster until this battle report. I'm glad I took time to read it!

I'm a fan of both Laurie and Fry, love them in Blackadder but I'm also glad to hear there's more to watch, I know they had another show together too. At the moment I watch a bit of Qi when I can, but it's not really the same thing :)

More importantly, there's some new fiction to peruse. PG Wodehouse, you say? Any titles in particular that are worth picking up?

Also, I never considered putting in some Germans so this now gives me a few more options for taking part in some VBCW.

That sounds about right... cue 'People's Front of Judea' references - "Right, this calls for immediate debate!"...

I suspect the East Suffolk Licensed Victuallers' Association myself, counter-revolutionaries, the lot of them, turning honest working men to drink... (shakes fist in impotent proletarian dispair).

Great reports, lovely photos, excellent minis - and great dollops of daftness to boot. Splendid work all round!

Christian, if you can get hold of any of the Jeeves and Wooster dvds with Fry and Laurie, you will not be disappointed. I found a boxed set of the whole series this Christmas, and here it was not too expensive. Worth every penny, as they get the period spot on, and they are, for me at least, the defiinitive portrayal of that pair.

Yup, it's where the Blackadder 'George' comes from!

There's definitely a whiff of VBCW in Blackadder Goes Forth, but that goes without saying! I think I'm starting to get what this is all about now :)

You're right about the J&W DVDs too... under AU$30 for the whole series! Pip pip!

Christian, what got me interested in this BCW was that although there is going to be some serious fighting, there is no reason why it should not be fun too. In fact I would rather concentrate on some of the absurdities etc of the period than not. Of course living in the UK it does mean that its fun to set it locally, ie I have based my take on it on where I live. Also there were historically many odd fringe groups actually about at the time, like the Greenshirts, an eco warrior group who were quite militant. There is something also very Heath Robinson about much of the military technology of this time. Enjoy the Jeeves and Wooster, and I think you wil see what I mean. Hope all that makes sense.
