Anyone done this?
Since I have been reading and viewing DVDs of Vietnam to get into the mood for painting my 28mm figures I've gotten interested in the wider context of the conflict. I figure Micro scale would be a good idea for combining river craft with Helicopter assaults etc. However I cant see it being much fun for the Vietnamese players.
Maybe it would be better as a fun painting project.

I've played a few micro-scale Vietnam games. It worked really well for Armored Cavalry type scenarios. That way we had armor (MBTs and APCs), helo's (slicks, scouts and gunships). It really depends on the rule system you use to see if it will be any fun for the VC/NVA player. They tend to be under equipped compared to the Free World Forces.
We use home-brew rules based on the FNG game by Two Hour Wargames. So all the players played the US forces while one person "game mastered" and played the VC/NVA. When the VC/NVA are allowed to be hidden and "pop out" for ambushes and traps it helps to balance out the fire power. Also, once a helo goes down the US mission parameters change from "search and destroy" to "vehicle/crew recovery" and then they start becoming sitting ducks. So there's plenty you can do to keep a VC/NVA player interested.

Have you looked at 1/200th.
Nice big battles but you can still make out the individual figures

Wow, that Pico armor is good looking stuff.
You probably know this, but GHQ has a big line of Vietnam as well. Civilians too.

Ok, if you're thinking about doing Vietnam in micro scale you've got to check out this thread on the GHQ forum:
http://www.ghqmodels.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=779&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=vietnam&start=0 (http://www.ghqmodels.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=779&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=vietnam&start=0)
Look for anything done by pibber. He does absoluty fantastic stuff, and a lot of it is scratchbuilt!!

Why not look at it from a different angle.
You could have a referee playing the VC (as they would be boring as you say) and controlling other elements (should there be any).
Then other players could be the US forces.
It would work better that way than a straight wargame I think. Depends how you like to play games though. :?

Hey cheers , there are some GHQ packets for sale on our local Ebay type site that have been tempting me. So far I have managed to avoid buying them but dont know how long I can resist. ::)
I will have a close look at the thread on the GHQ site thanks.
You could really go to town doing terrain boards in that scale but it could end up being hard to put the figures on. Think I will have to think it over some more. o_o

I had a good look through that GHQ thread . The stuff by Pibber is amazing and he has given me some ideas I can use in 28mm.
I'm really interested in getting some GHQ items now. :-*
